gain life don't allow him to attack with ghostly prison and sphere of safety. if the oppent use player target spell you put from your side deck leyline of sanctuary. And for finish the opponent (multiplayer) you need 51+ lifes to combo exquisite blood and aetherflux reservoir to chain 50 damage( you can spam the aetherflux ability with exquisite). in solo you just need aetherflux but exquisite can be useful in combo with serra ascendant by doubling your life gain with lifelink.
