Deck Description

This is an oppressive controlly midrange deck filled with two-for-ones that beats, draws and kills.

How to Play

Every card in this deck fits into at least one of these three categories: Removal, draw, and finishers.


~Removal~

Man-o'-War: One of the most underrated creatures in pauper. It's board advantage is often essentially gaining control of an opponent's creature, and it has large trade-up potential as a 2/2.

Vapor Snag: A spiky bouncy ball. The actual advantage over unsummon isn't great, but losing a creature and a life at the same time at the cost of one mana makes opponents want to curl up and cry.

Snap: It's free. What more could you want?

Counterspell: The raw power of countering a spell for two mana is undeniable.

Daze: The Force of Will of pauper. (See: Snap.) Good early, but sort of a dead draw late in the game.


~Draw~

Mulldrifter: A Divination with Wind Drake potential. My policy is to never evoke it unless I absolutely have to, because it's a busted card when you can get the 5 mana to cast it. A crazy trick for doing this is to tap four lands for mana, return two for Gush (see below), play a land that you just returned, then cast Mulldrifter; essentially netting 4 cards and an evasive 2/2 with the downside of missing a land drop. Being an evasive 2/2, Mulldrifter can also win games when your main beatsticks are removed.

Brainstorm: When a card's restricted in Vintage, you know it's good. When combined with Evolving Wilds, this bad boy draws you three cards and gets you rid of two useless ones. Count me in.

Ninja of the Deep Hours: Silly kids. Trix are for Ninjas. This sneaky little guy has great synergy with Man-o'-War and Mulldrifter, while drawing a card himself. Your opponent's face will be hilarious when he cheats himself in after a Quicksand activation or a Divine Verdict.

Gush: Free Divination; is to this deck as Thoughtcast is to Affinity. (See: Snap, Daze.) It can also be used to simulate a land drop (See: Mulldrifter).


~Finishers~

Delver of Secrets: It's hard to pass up a creature that once ruled Modern. It's a 3/2 flier for 1 that simply has to be answered.

Errant Ephemeron: Similar to Delver of Secrets, the Ephemeron is an undercosted, large flier. Unlike Delver, it's the biggest boy in the air at common.

I like Accumulated Knowledge. On the second time around, it's already super-powerful. Also, I prefer Spire Golem to Errant Ephemeron. If not Spire Golem, you could play Lonely Sandbar over Evolving Wilds.

I preferred Ephemeron because, unlike with spire golem, you can protect it with a counterspell when all the counters come off. The additional power and haste also gives your opponent less time to respond.

I second accumulated knowledge over opt for vintage, though.

I'm a huge fan of Portent as an alternative to Brain Storm. You can also use Portent to look at the top 3 cards of your opponent's library, re-order them, or force them to reshuffle if you don't like what you see.

What is the point of evolving wilds in a mono-colored deck?

Portent is a cool card, never heard of it before. Seems like a Ponder you can also use on an opponent, which is great flexibility. However, the reason I run Brainstorm is I can get rid of the cards in my hand least useful for the current situation, and shuffle them away with Evolving Wilds. Portent/Ponder doesn't have that hand interaction. I run Evolving Wilds for that reason as well as land thinning. Think of it as a common fetchland rather than Evolving Wilds and the stigma attached to it. :)

Not to rain on your parade, but most of these cards you've discussed in your deck are well known for powerhouse cards in the format. The only thing I see on hear that screams "new" is Errant Ephemeron, which is either due to A) I haven't seen it in a while or B) there has probably been better options. While nowadays people play this with a splash of black for Angler and removal, I will say the following...

If you're gonna commit to Mono Blue, do it with a little more efficiency. Brainstorm is cute, but Ponder and Preordain don't require Evolving Wilds to work, and honestly those are better in Pauper for that reason. If you insist on Brainstorm, throw in Terramorphic Expanse to increase your value in Brainstorm. Also, drop down on Gush and Daze IMO. Sure, "free" spells are good, but how is replaying a land good in the long run? Try stuff like Memory Lapse, which not only answers a problem but forces your opponent to lose out on card advantage by giving them back the same card AND netting card advantage for yourself. For sideboard, (or main board) throw in Spreading Seas. That card is monstrous in it's ability to shut down decks that rely on certain colors with few lands, like Goblin.

On one more note regarding Brainstorm, while I see your point in running it, as I said earlier with Terramorphic Expanse, you HAVE to have shuffle effects to make it good. Why not consider Wayfarer's Bauble? It's an easy turn one play that helps ramp in a color that NEEDS ramp at most times. It also gives you the flexibility needed to more reliably run stuff like Daze and Gush, using it as a ruse to ramp and make your opponent feel safe, then after you get a land you Daze to catch them off guard with a Daze, or helped make Gush's ridiculous cost a little easier.

Overall, I'd recommend doing a little bit more research before stating you broke Pauper. I feel like you jumped the gun after you made this deck out of excitement. Yes, it's strong, but if you looked a little deeper you'd have seen a few Primer off of your first page on a Google search. I like that someone is putting out a Pauper deck, but remember: If its good, it's probably been done before, so look it up before you make it. Nine out of ten you'll find some sweet decklists you can check out and modify to your liking, while not coming off a bit brash.

While I'd agree "I Broke Pauper" is an overstatement, I imagine the guy was just trying to have an attention-grabbing title.
