Deck discussion for Esper Control (Standard)

Maybe my deck will give you some ideas: http://www.mtgvault.com/ViewDeck.aspx?DeckID=248790

I like all the instant removal you've packed in. I'm concerned, however, that with only 1 timely reinforcement, you're depending too heavily on card-draw to remove the other player's creatures, and you have no way to gain back the life you've lost.

Add Batterskull, more Timely Reinforcements.

Day of Judgment deals with aggro. 1 or 2 more of those.

Oblivion Ring deals with control. 1 or 2 more of those.

Also, adding Zombie Infestation is not like Liliana's +1 because the enemy does not have to discard.

It seems like you're in a weird limbo between mid-range and control. Choose one and go with it, otherwise you're topdecking and relying (more heavily than you need to be) on luck.

+1.

Thanks for the tips. I sideboarded some of the cards you said, mainly because I got few new cards yesterday such as Gideon, so i needed to make some space for that. I see what you mean about Zombie Infestation, do you know of any other cards in standard that might be more suited for this deck?

I'd recommend despise instead of Zombie infestation. It gives you card advantage instead of them. It's also good Turn 1. I use it myself.

Should I use solemn or not? I can't decide. It hasn't been bad in the deck, but I'm not sure its been that good. should I use that or grimoire of the dead?

not sure about solemn, but definitely put in the last forbidden alchemy

How about black sun in the sb against aggro decks? that way, i kill their 2/2s while my big creatures just get -1/-1 counters.

Also robert, I dont want to have 4 alchemy because its a dead draw once i have my creatures and unburial rites in my hand or graveyard, and also because sometimes it can be dangerous when i have to mill lands and counter spells, etc.

Ya I have ran esper and forbidden alchemy is really good, I would also run think twice I'm a believer in that card. It's so good early game as for Norn I'd keep him in. I'd dtop the looter and run an image or evil twin. I ran 2 and two and it recked faces.! Ever though of rune scared demon? Really good!.

Cards in question:
BSZ - no. You have six board clearing cards, which should be plenty.
Solemn - yes. There is nothing wrong with mana ramp and chump block drawness.

Cards to consider:
Despise, Deathmark (sideboard), celestial purge (sideboard)

Cards to remove:
Platinum Emperion - unnecessary

You already know I love this deck though...and you.

Hey Conner, guess what? Your deck is on upcoming decks! YAYAYAY! But for a legitimate concern, I would suggest:
-1 Dismember
+1 Go for the Throat
and switch Go for the Throats to the mainboard while sideboarding the Doom Blades. Go for the Throat is just so much better.

Sideboard the Doom Blades, Add in 2x Go For The Throat. Take out one unburial Rites, and add in another Day of Judgment. If you want to get froggy you could play Black Sun's Zenith if you really wanted too. It's a fantastic card, so while I'm personally not against it... I could only see you removing draw, or your kill spells for it. I personally find it better than Day of Judgment, and does allow for more control because you can keep your biggen's around. If you do decide to go with that, you could always consider something like Adaptive automaton to give the zombies off of grave titan a minimal boost, but for a much lighter cost than Elish Norn. But I'm a very aggressive player, so it tends to show in just about everything I build. xD ~Enjoy.

pretty good deck i like the way its set up. i would have to agee with some comments of adding in Adaptive. if u take out snapy and elish u can make the room for 3 adaptives. i would consider it for the sb really just for a little more agression if u need it. good luck with the deck. +1

Divination is better than Think Twice for card draw since it will only end up costing you 3 mana rather than 4 to get 2 cards drawn instead of 5

I disagree Think twice is instant speed and divination is sorcery speed. With a control build u want instant to so u can keep mana open for when u need it. With divination you'll 9 out 10 tones tap out to play it. Then that' gives ur opponent there opening which is bad!.

You could change a lot to make it stronger. Starting with more Snapcasters, less bombs. Tap-Out control might be a bit vulnerable to Vapor Snag, Need more Negate. Mana leak is a dead card in the mirror so cut some. More Timely, more O-ring more spot removal and add some images for Thrun or Olivia or Geist. Looter might be a nice new Tech. Not sure you want to tap out of it tough. And in the mirror deck out is a real problem. WoG is much better then BZ but singleton could be cool.

You need 3 Snapcasters minimum.

With the Forbidden Alchemy's you'll be discarding land so you will need to bump that up to 26/27.

4 Unburial rites is too much. Having 2 is ideal (3 if you just can't stand to live without them).

And let go of the Merfolk Looters. Drop in one Blue Sun's Zenith and replace the open slots with removal.

Finally, leave some flexability in the bomb slots for when the new set comes out.

Despite what some of these comments have suggested, don't take out elesh Norn. She's a win condition by herself in a few instances, and in standard with all the token-happy decks she's just incredible for the time being.

Check out my Esper-control deck. In mine, I like to use Elixir of immortality. It will keep shuffling your removal back into your library, and it allows you to use Forbidden Alchemy with much more freedom(unless you're very unlucky and keep flipping your elixirs lol) Mainboard I'd add one Black Sun over a Think twice, or over a Day of Judgment and then sideboard 1/2 copies of each so you can sideboard according to whatever you may need. BSZ, in my opinion, is better than DoJ because it keeps coming back, and by the time you really need to use one, you generally have enough mana to kill anything that poses a major threat.

I've been running this deck for ages and I can tell u first off u need to fix that mana base. 9 non basics? 24 total? I run 11 basics and 25 total. Even if money is an issue, just get the cheap ally duals. Drop the Merfolk looters. Add one batterskull. Drop him and protect him for the win. I can't tell u how many games he's saved my butt. I started maining 2. Lol. Don't play solemn in here. Flare and esper have strong enough draw power that u should t have trouble finding lands. Side sheoldred. U don't run enough creatures for her to be useful. She's better in the more flare style decks that can Titan image image image image with her. Play one ghost quarter in the main. Just cuz inkmoth and wolf run are easy matchups without their silly lands. I would say check out mine but I still have my original list up. Check it out later tonite for some ideas. I'm heading to the shop to modify it some more. When I do I'll post it up

ok guy i have some suggestions A) negate is awesome yes but it would be best to choose either dissipate or negate and run4 of tht. remove 1 unburail rites and 1 forbidden alchemy for 2 throats. never hurts to throw in ratchet bombs either they are very awesome......when dark ascension comes out look for the following -Havengul Lich , Sorin, Lord of Innistrad , Increasing Ambition,Curse of Exhaustion, and Archangel's Light....these would be cool.....lich and sorin especially.
