Deck Description

Mardu Gearhulk Reanimator idea that's rotation proof. Still need to aquire a number of these cards before I can play this. Making an order for the missing cards end of September 2017.

*Edit 29 August 2017
Main Deck:
-4 Fatal Push
+4 Cut // Ribbons
While Fatal Push is a strong card, I feel Cut // Ribbons fits this deck better. I lose the ability to kill something on turn one. I gain something I don't hate discarding and more damage if milled via Combustible Gearhulk. Also, 2 mana 4 damage is pretty strong, and Ribbons is a finisher.

I want Ashes of the Abhorrent in my sideboard once Ixalan comes out, so I may work Fatal Push into the side because Ashes prevents Ribbons from being cast.

Also contemplating dropping 1 God-Pharaoh's Gift for a Boneyard Parley. At very least, I think it'd worth testing once it comes out.

How to Play

Cathartic Reunion; Tormenting Voice; and Bloodrage Brawler get artifacts into the graveyard.

Refurbished returns any artifact to the battlefield. Ideally we want God-Pharaoh's Gift, but a Gearhulk is a good target too.

Liliana, Death's Majesty is in here mostly for her [-3] which reanimates a creature. Her [+1] can help get Gearhulks into the graveyard, to be reanimated.

Deck discussion for Gearhulks Reconstructed

Hey I recently saw a deck very similar to this at my FNM group. It seemed to really go off turn 3-4. Have you built a physical copy of this deck? If so what have your experiences been like?

Sadly I'm missing a large majority of the cards, but I remember MTG Goldfish doing a deck like this. Should be a few games on their YouTube channel.

Made a small change. What do you think?

I like it a lot! I think you have a good amount of discard outlet to make the reanimation of the gearhulks to go off. I agree although fatal push is good, But Ribbons could be the nail in the coffin. I love that its rotation proof too.

Probably because of how expensive the exchange rate makes this for me (I'm in South Africa), I like to plan ahead. So close to rotation I look at what can be playable after rotation. No point in wasting money on stuff I can't use.

Oh, i'm all about budget standard decks, however I play in a super casual play group. I think my most expensive deck right now (for standard) is my G/W Cats.

Really like the the general theme of this deck. This deck reminds me of the old Hidden Horror reanimation decks except its being done in red, white, and black.
What this deck really needs is better cheaper reanimation than refurnish and and God's Pharaoh gift.
In modern you could use animate dead and possibly exhume. Unfortunately, standard is weak in good low mana cost reanimation spells.

There's definitely better reanimate options outside of Standard, but this is built for Standard. The [-3] of Liliana, Death's Majesty also reanimates, so she's a 5 mana reanimate spell, which I'd about par for the course.

I had fun with my 4 colour Titan reanimate deck back when New Phyrexia was Standard legal, using cards like Faithless Looting, Mulch and Merfolk Looter to get Grave Titan or Frost Titan into the graveyard to reanimate with Unburial Rites and using Phyrexian Metamorph to copy the Titans. When I first saw the Gearhulks, I immediately wanted to do that again, so I've been keeping an eye on the available self mill / loot effects and reanimate effects. So far I'm liking this. Can't wait to get what I'm missing so I can run it in paper Magic.

BTW, Exhume and Animate Dead are not Modern legal. Your best Reanimate cards in Modern are:
Emeria, the Sky Ruin - Requires 7+ Plains, land.
Claim (Claim // Fame) - Limited to cmc 2 or less, 1 mana.
Goryo's Vengeance - Limited to legendary creatures, lasts 1 turn, grants haste, 2 mana.
Footsteps of the Goryo - Lasts 1 turn, does not grant haste, 3 mana.
Whip of Erebos - Reusable, lasts 1 turn, grants haste and lifelink, 4 mana.
Resurrection and Zombify - Unconditional, 4 mana.
Vigor Mortis - Unconditional, can give +1/+1 counter, 4 mana.
Defy Death - Unconditional, gives two +1/+1 counters if reanimating an Angel, 5 mana.
Fearsome Awakening - Unconditional, gives two +1/+1 counters if reanimating a Dragon, 5 mana.
Liliana, Death's Majesty - Reusable, fills graveyard, 5 mana.
Unburial Rites - Unconditional, reanimates twice, 5 mana from hand, then 4 mana off Flashback.

So the average cmc for Modern legal reanimate seems to be about 4 or 5 mana. Cheaper options are available, but they come with restrictions.
