Deck Description

I've been racking my brain over how to make a mono black "burn" deck for the last few days. This is the best I could come up with.

Sideboard is still under construction, but I feel Tainted Remedy is a must vs any lifegain strategies.

How to Play

The deck leans heavily on Bloodchief Ascension slowly draining the opponent's life, so that's the ideal turn one play. Everything else was chosen for dealing / draining 2 or more damage / life to get counters on the Ascension. Ascension also works well with most Modern decks' tendency to rely on Fetch and Shock lands.

Because the curve of where the "burn" effects are is not ideal, I've included Talisman of Indulgence to ramp into Mutilate and Murderous Redcap or multiple spells a turn. The Talisman also provides red for the off chance you get enough mana to flashback Bump in the Night.

Because most of the "burn" goes directly to the opponent, Inquisition of Kozilek and Mutilate help control the hand and board a bit.

Deck discussion for Mono Black "Burn"

How about Alms of the Vein, would work great with Collective Brutality discarding it and playing one madness. Also, I know it's not all that great and based mostly around luck you could run Chancellor of the Dross.

The problem I have with Alms and the Chancellor is that I only have one discard outlet, and that's only optional discard. Alms is only good if Madness'ed, and Chancellor is only good if in your opening hand, then as discard fodder. Otherwise, they are good cards.

This is true. But in place of what? Hm...

Love the concept of Dash Hopes...problem is, you have to already have your opponent over a barrel to get the result you want. This deck is aligned to do that, though, so...? Maybe cut Talisman of Indulgence, & forego the flashback option on Bump?

This deck makes me uncomfortable. I'd hate to play against it.

Maybe a cheap but profitable sac outlet so you could get even more value after death?

I'm not sure where you want to go with this, but as budget options go, this seems fine. However, I might suggest a couple changes: I would definately take out the four murderous redcaps and replace them with Dark Confidant. Bob is just an extremely powerful unit in a burn build like this. If you do use four bobs, drop to two sign in bloods. I would consider switching Mutilates and just putting the Fatal Pushes in mainboard. Black is in a really weird position where you will have to do more pressuring with your creatures than trying to destroy them and "combo" in a sense. Mutilate is definately better against go wide strategies, but Fatal Push is absolutely prime removal at low cost, giving you better flexibility. I think no matter how you look at it, I definately believe you can't go wrong with a playset of Lightning Bolts, it's unfortunate you'd splash red, but there's no denying the fact that black doesn't have the prime pieces red has: and it should really help your blood chief ascension. My only complaint about bloodchief ancesion is it seems to go against what some of the other cards are doing, because it relys on stuff going to the graveyard rather than burning the opponent.

Most Tom: :D Called Tim: Yeah, but it essentially results in burn, "black-style", so...Do like Bob.

I Like what you're doing here, this is fun and maybe a bit aggressive but nothing tier 1 and $800. I do have a couple suggestions though since you said you had some trouble finding decent cards to play.

Blightning- if you can get one source of red, it's pretty destructive

Morsel Theft- prowl cost obviously

Soul Spike- like Avatar of Discord in a way, if you're looking for consistency

Avatar of Discord- good top end beater

Bontu- sacrifice outlet, but needs fodder

Demonic Taskmaster- sacrifice outlet

Hunted Horror- if you can get rid of the centaurs

Master of the Feast- I'd suggest discard in some form or another

Phylactery Lich- if you have the artifacts

Rite of Consumption - black Fling with life gain

Consume Spirit- might be too costly

Vampiric Link- rip Death's Shadow decks

*Sideboard*

Rain of Gore- if you could reliably get red, this would maybe be better than Tainted Remedy

As far as the sideboard goes, that's more for whatever meta you're involved with, like the decks you'd face at FNM, your friends' decks, or whatever is popular competitively. Attacking life gain is a must though, as in some cases even Red Burn can lose to +5-8 life gain (which is fairly easy to obtain at 1 mana), so that's always something to prepare for. Not sure how the deck runs so I can't really say much else. Tresspasser's curse might be a little clunky and unhelpful, you might want to consider changing it out when you've found good hate cards for your meta.
If you are looking to remove cards from the mainboard, I'd suggest Redcap and the Myr, unless you have ways to recur them to the battlefield in a cheap and repeatable way. I agree with TheyCallMeTim as well, Fatal Push should be mainboard with Mutilate in the side.

idk but when you say tainted remedy it really makes me want to do a Tainted Beacon deck. (Beacon of Immortality + Tainted Remedy) If I understand it correctly its an insta-kill.

Yes it would. Beacon would try to make the targeted player gain life and Tainted would override it into life loss. The problem I see is Beacon's mana cost. You could include Wall of Shards for it's cumulative upkeep cost of an opponent gaining life, also it's a 0/8 defender with flying for 2 mana. And Idyllic Tutor to fetch Tainted Remedy. Blessed Alliance is a good removal card for the idea too. Trigon of Mending looks like it could find a place in the deck too.

Maybe Contaminated Bond or Visions of Brutality in the side, but I'm not sure what to replace xD

I would suggest Blood Seeker, but I see you already have Trespasser's Curse. That's way better.

Visions of Brutality sounds like a fun sideboard option. But space is also a problem.
