Deck Description

Most zombie decks go for the "wide" approach, meaning weak but many, to the point of overwhelming the opponent. Sepulcher takes a drastically different approach. This deck has gone through several iterations before I finally settled on this (I've left all the comments in tact as they really helped out-thanks!). Originally I was trying to include every zombie that gives another zombie +1/+1. The problem? Flight was weak to non-existent and the zombies themselves lacked any real kick until far too late in the game. The real problem with zombie decks in most tournaments is that they lack synergy. Therefore, I've included two creatures (both avatars oddly) that not only fill in the need for flight (inexpensive, cataclysmic flight) but also that help add a bit of chemistry to the other cards. The result has been very, very successful.

A lot of players give me grief for having Victim of the Night in the deck instead of Fatal Push. Granted I have FP sideboarded but consider this, almost no one is playing werewolves, vampires or zombies in Modern. For only 2 black, I can destroy nearly any creature AND as an instant. Fatal Push has some restrictions that make it a bit less appealing to me but we'll see how it plays out.

How to Play

The basic idea is to stall with the speed of the Gravecrawler and Diregraf Ghoul while trying to get out the Zombie Infestation-as that is the key card to running this deck. Discarding cards to the grave that you can replay (Gravecrawler, Haakon, Nameless Inversion) and especially setting up a devastating attack by 2+ Demigods of Revenge. I have Infernal Tutor on the sideboard and may add a second as the card helps obtain those Demigods. The problem is that the tutor kind of gives away your gameplan, so it may be better suited for game 2 of a best of 3. In running aggressive mono black, there's a major lack of direct damage causing cards, which is why many black decks add a splash of red. personally I feel that Consume Spirit handles that role nicely. I prefer this card over the Gray Merchant because I can use it on creatures or players. The final secret weapon is the Avatar of Discord. A 5/3 flyer for only 3 black is ridiculous AND the fact that it's downside (discarding 2 cards) is exactly how this deck runs makes it a perfect flying hazard for the opponent. Draw a couple sample hands and let me know your thoughts!

***One final thought. I've had many players argue with me that 20 swamps is way too few and that really I should have 24 or 25. I disagree for a couple reasons. Firstly, this is a mono black deck. That helps alleviate the need for extra lands to balance out the draws. Secondly, in the real world, I insert a swamp every 3 cards and then flip shuffle 3 times. This is totally legal and works like a charm as I almost never end up mana shorted. The way the "random" algorithm of this site works, you end up shorted on land with this approach and may have to reshuffle a time or two. I guarantee that is not the case with my shuffling technique in person. Granted I almost never see more than 4 or 5 swamps in a game also, but with this deck I don't need more than 5 lands.***

Deck discussion for Sepulcher

Gotta admit, I wasn't thinking much about this zombie deck until I drew a hand or two. Nasty, nasty stuff. And much quicker than I'd ever expect mainly thanks to Phylactery Lich. Nice surprise. Only thing I'd suggest is removing the Bad Moon and adding an artifact that does the same thing. Trust me, Phylactery Lich is your secret weapon. Another artifact like your sideboarded Darksteel Plate would be a better choice. Great deck though man!

A thought on making Phylactery Lich a more consistant drop: if you run Dimir Machinations you can always transmute to search for Lich (and its a decent removal spell anyway for when you don't need to search anything).

Undead Warchief and Gray Merchant of Asphodel could be some ideas. The warchief is a very aggressive drop, giving all your zombies, including himself, +2/+1 and lowering their casting-costs by {1}. Gray Merchant of Asphodel can finish of your opponent later on very quickly without having to attack.
Splashing blue would give you access to Havengul Runebinder and Diregraf Captain. The runebinder can convert your dead creatures into 2/2 tokens and +1/+1 counters for everyone while Diregraf Captain is another captain that makes your opponent lose life whenever you lose one of your zombies.

Greetings
Muktol

@Muktol Thank you for the suggestions! I completely agree with you and will be revamping this deck to include both the Undead Warchief and Gray Merchant of Asphodel.

@Muktol, if I were to add a splash of blue-other than definitely including Diregraf Captain and possibly Runebinder, what other blue spells would you recommend? Keep in mind that I'd prefer to keep the ratio of black to blue something like 80/20.

Sorry that the answer took so long, I've been on holiday ;)
There are several cards that could be used when using blue, tough the number of cheap and fast ones is limited: Grixis Grimblade, Prized Amalgam (Works like a charm with Geralf's Messenger or Gravecrawler), Skaab Ruinator (May be a little bit hard to cast) or Stitched Drake (Flying). Havengul Runebinder could also be of interest tough you have to exile a creature to pay his effect.
Undead Alchemist would enable you to switch your deck from kill to mill, tough I'm not a real big fan of that card as it basically doubles/ triples the damage you have to deal to your opponent.
On the support side you could use control spells like Rune Snag or evasion effects like Artful Dodge.

Could I suggest 4 x METALLIC MIMIC?

@Desthian You know, I am so split on Metallic Mimic. I have tried to include it in a couple different tribal decks and really thought it would work well in this zombie deck. The problem is that it only affords it's +1/+1 counters to NEW zombies coming into play. If it is drawn later in the game, it's not very useful-especially at 1 toughness which is just too easily taken out. I really wish they would've made the mimic a 1/2 creature!
