I love cruel ultimatum. I used it for the first time in an EDH premade deck i got to use it like 5 times in one game

i think 4 cryptics and 3 cruel ultimatum is A LOT..i personally would bring cryptic down to 2 and ultimatum down to 1.up 1 snapcaster and up 2 vendilion clique. also maybe change 1 tarn to a second creeping tar pit.

if you have a few mins i would appreciate feedback on my standard deck! thanks and take care

Command is pretty much the most important card in the deck

casey I am also surprised at the singleton Tar Pit. Since you can't fetch either manland, I would think that two Tar Pits would be better than the split between Lavaclaw Reaches

The unblockable part is sweet for securing wins :) but i was testing between tar pit and lavaclaw since i cant decide which one is more useful

Sorry for my english :p not my mother language

Jace is very useful for mid/late game, as it gives more draw..

Guess i will test the deck with 1 and 2 jaces

I don't see anything big and scary within this deck. Something like Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker or even AEtherling would be right at home in here. Taking out a Cryptic Command and an Ultimatum would probably be best

See that's the thing though, Cruel Ultimatum is the win con (it seems like it anyways). You control your opponents board until you can cast a cruel ultimatum that sets you so far ahead of your opponent that you just win the game from there; the card is so much card advantage that your opponent won't be able to catch up. They also have man lands, which are also a win con but I would add another Creeping Tar Pit personally.

Ultimatum is the winning condition on this deck so i guess 3 of them is nice... And you can always hit with snapcaster and tar pit

You only have 2 man lands. I'd personally NOT put all of my faith in 2 lands and 3 copies of Cruel Ultimatum
While I only have 2 Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker and a single Master of Cruelties ( I want another one) in my control deck, I have back-ups in case they don't work out. And that includes 2 Cruel Ultimatum

1

yeah but nicol bolas is a 8 mana drop, and in modern... hummm no :)

master of cruelties is a complete different thing as it can win the game alone EG: master attacks + bolt xD WIN

One you drop Bolas, there is almost NOTHING that can stop you. Try it with a Grixis control and see for yourself

So i'm pretty new to the Vault. Also, I guess I feel new to Magic in general even though I played back in the day; the meta game is very alien to me. I just gotta ask, is the super high cost of the deck necessary for some reason or is it just a clever meta joke? Scalding Tarn, for example, seems completely ridiculous to add to the deck, since it's basically just an Evolving Wilds that costs a ton of money and makes you lose life. So....meta joke, or necessarily $700??

The difference is really that you can search for Ravinca Shock lands, or Original Dual Lands (Volcanic Island, Tropical Island, ect.), which is insanely powerful, allowing you to fix your mana by finding dual lands with it, thinning your deck (though some don't buy this benefit), and allowing them to come in untapped is super powerful. Though this isn't necessarily powerful to casual players, but it is powerful to a lot of competitive level modern, legacy and vintage players (possibly standard once khans of tarkir comes out).

Basically you are paying for consistency in your deck, and when you are in three colors you need to be able to cast all of your spells consistently.

0
Posted 05 September 2014 at 14:59

/nod got it. Thanks for the explanation! I do see that being able to pull out dual lands and use them immediately is key, especially in a deck like this where control of the opponent's hand / the board is so important. Waiting that extra turn to use a mana could be a game losing situation.

Right sometimes you have to pay an extra price for your deck to work the way you want to, and in this case it happens to be more money. XD I'm glad that I could help! :)

But hey khans are coming!!!

0

With 3 colours and control, you have to have a LOT of dual lands to keep on casting spells of all your colours
This means you will pay a lot of money though....

Ultimatum for the win xD

How do you win? I'm not seeing a whole lot of outright win conditions. It appears to be primarily control.

yea I suggested adding a second tarpit because the lack of win cons. also suggested uppin to 4 snaps and 2 cliques

could anyone give some thought to my standard deck? thanks and take care!

so many 1- and 2- of's... id like to see some more power control cards, like lilliana of the veil, more slaughter pact, grim lavamancer, dark confidant. think you are trying to add to much of everything, and in that way watering down your draws. maybe some should go sideboard. i definetly think you should have more ways to force discard, thats black control's biggest strength in modern

I like control decks and this one is interesting. Cruel Ultimatum(id think about upping it to 4) is awesome i loved using it in the deck that i posted below. Ive got a premade red abd blue control that my brother vaan104 doesnt like. I do think that 26 lands is a bit much but i prefer to use 22 lands. 4 snapcasters would be better. along with dreadbore instead of terminate. I suppose ofr some extra draws the jace is nice but i dont know if itd be my first choice for a walker

I really need those lands... Since you have draw power, resources in hand, you need lands to make magic happen xD

Yes you do, I'd risk 25 or even 24, but that's a stretch. Have you considered upping the manlands, and adding faerie conclave? Would let you start attack if they have no creatures

1

If your wanting to keep the deck modern i havnt figured out how to make it work but if your not against playing it in casual or legacy you could put in cabal coffers.

For attacking i have tar pit i think there is no need for faerie conclave, but hey it might work :)

The concept looks a bit random to me... ...not sure how to improove it without completely reconstructing the whole thing... ...looks fun though... ...perhaps you could use some sweet Blightning(one of the best commons in MTG history)... :)

I don't know it Blightning is the way you want to go with this deck, I think it's better to just have more permission early on and just out tempo your opponent and smack them with a cruel ultimatum.

I see you have a Teferi in the side board. If you wanna make no friends, find a way to keep Teferi alive and well and then drop a possibility storm. They no longer get to play spells.

-2 deamon
-1 dreadbore
+1 terminate
+1 cryptic
+1 batterskull
-1 urborg
-1 temple of deceit
+2 creeping tar pit
in two days replace the mesas with on color fetches
also may want to consider shadow of doubt and multiple slaughter pacts main
