Deck Description

Alright. I thought I might share my current modern deck that has won me quite a few local tournaments. Granted it's nothing huge and doesn't have many power cards in it, it's great with dealing with small threats that like to build up over time.

Creature type based decks are a little silly in Modern. Really, the only ones I've ever seen work efficiently are Kithkin, Merfolk, Elves, and Goblins. Everything else is either (A. Too slow or (B. Relies too much on lords to produce damage output. Well, creature based decks seem to be gaining more and more popularity within modern and I figured that maybe to capitalize on that, I'd work around with my own "creature based" anti-creature deck. (not really gonna explain why kill cards are in here tho)

1 Drops:

Cruel Sadist - Was almost too good to pass up. This little girl get's big, fast. I hardly have had to use her second ability, but in conjunction with the vampire's ability, you'll have a pretty good dedicated 5/5 soon.

Ruthless Ripper - Never played her on turn one, really. She's a nasty surprise, since morph isn't all that common in modern. Her check also let's you balance out the lifeloss you'll get from Cruel Sadist so hopefully your opponent falls in life total with you. Plus a dead creature to boot.

Gruul Draz Assassin - Harbinger of this deck. This card is noteworthy in it's own right for being one of the best cards out it's block. It's cheap to cast, takes very little time to level up, and can take out mid range creatures like it's going out to style.

2 Drops:

Thrill-Kill Assassin - I love this card. A 2/3 for two with deathtouch is nothing to pass up, because throwing her at fodder 1/1's is like her job.

Scarblade Elite - The inspiration for this deck. What's better than killing things? Killing things with things that are already dead to you! Great EoT card and will probably draw the most fire.

3 Drops:

Vampire Nighthawk - Absolutely love this guy. He's a great creature, packing deathtouch AND lifelink, allowing you to gain life back from your Cruel Sadist and Phyrexian Arena usages. What's more is he flies. As a three drop, and the only three drop, couldn't think of anyone better.

Phyrexian Arena - Without a doubt the best card draw for back in modern. Granted it's got a bit of a hassle with life but you should be ending them before turn 6-7 if you can draw a Persecutor, which at 2 cards a turn, shouldn't be hard.

4 Drops:

Abyssal Persecutor - The beatstick of the deck. He's not an Assassin, but he'll do a number on the opponent that's for sure. He's the main source of damage for the deck, and will punch them down till they say uncle... or at least till he dies. Scarblade has had to kill him on more than one occasion. Tombstalker is in the sideboard for him in case opponent is wise enough to try to keep him alive so either Arena kills me or they do.

How to Play

So the object of the deck, in all due reality, is to control the opponents board while subsequently filling yours. All your creatures (minus Nighthawk, Persecutor, and Thrill-Kill) have a way of doing this. Ideally, you get a Gruul/Cruel Draw turn 1, turn 2 you level him up/add a +1/+1 counter. Turn three is spent either playing an Arena or another creature. Turn four is usually spent leveling up Gruul/Cruel.

After that, it's usually depends on what you come up against. Against other creature heavy decks, bar Goblins, the main deck seems to do quite well. You'll need to switch in the Drown in Sorrow and Smothers for Goblins tho.
