Deck Description

I ran this deck for Game Day - Aether Revolt and placed third of 17 total players. I went:
2-0 vs R/B Aggro w/ Herald of Anguish
2-1 vs R/G Energy
2-1 vs R/U Dynavolt Tower
1-2 vs G/B Delirium
2-0 vs Bant Aetherworks Marvel

Notable moments include:
Against our R/U Dynavolt Tower opponent firs-turning Harsh Scrutiny to find 4x Anticipate and drawing into a turn-three Lost Legacy. They are able to cast one , but three draws is better than essentially a back-to-back-to-back Scry 3.

Trangress the Mind hitting at any point during the game. We've removed countless planeswalkers, Aetherwind Basker, Elder-Deep Fiend, Verdurous Gearhulk. . .with a fairly high percentage of making life difficult for our opponent a turn before they were able to do so to us. The card is extremely powerful in what we are trying to accomplish with this deck. . .

. . .deny the opponent the chance to react or set up a significant board state before they are over come by our large creatures.

How to Play

The stars of the deck are arguably Harsh scrutiny and Hedron Crawler. Without the control and knowledge through Scrutiny, coupled with the ramp that Crawler provides, this deck is subject to falling behind with a low chance of recovery.

We want to gain a foot hold over our opponents hand, and keep it up with a turn-three Thought-Knot Seer if possible, into turn-four heavy beats courtesy of Reality Smasher. When this isn't possible we are keeping the board as clear as possible making way for a Reality Smasher (or two) and Noxious Gearhulk to end the game quickly.

Time after time Succumb to Temptation swoops in right when it's needed to keep the tempo while Liliana gives us a way to distract our opponent, stave off damage, and/or return beat sticks to our hand. Collective Brutality and Ob Nixilis Reignited are nice flavor, and of course what would a mono-black deck be without a healthy array of removal?

The board is equal parts answers against the control and aggro match up. I found Altar's Reap lack-luster in many situations, but updates will include the addition of 1x Eliminate the Competition when we find ourselves facing an over run of creatures that have way too many counters as well as the swapping out of Flaying Tendrils for Yahenni's Expertise. I'll also be testing Heroic Intervention coming out of the board, as saving even a single Reality Smasher or Noxious Gearhulk from the graveyard could be quite unexpected and pivotal.

Thank you for checking out my first public deck! All feedback appreciated.
