Deck Description

Merfolk tribal/Aggro for the new standard. Synergy with this deck has been excellent so far. I've only tested against the current Standard meta of Temur Energy. I'm not too sure about my sideboard and I'm not too sure this will hold up great against U/W Approach or any control decks, God-Pharaoh's gift decks and anything with Flying. Needs help.

Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca vs Nissa, Steward of Elements, I feel that Nissa, Steward of Elements is slightly better in this deck as it really gives this deck a much needed board advantage earlier than what Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca can bring.

Appreciate the help guys, thanks.

Changes:

Sideboarded 2x Deeproot Waters, 1x Admiral's Order and 1x Chart a Course

Placed 2x Silvergill Adept and 2x Kopala, Warden of Waves

Felt that I needed more bodies in this deck. Did not really want to sacrifice Deeproot waters, but it's just way too slow for this low curve deck. Silvergill Adept gives good card advantage and Kopala, Warden of Waves just saves my Merfolks and diverts the opponent's attention to it for removal.

How to Play

The plan of the deck is to hit your opponent with unblockable merfolk.

Unblockable creatures:
Mist-Cloaked Herald
River Sneak - These 2 creatures are the primary attackers, keep them pumped and protect them
Herald of Secret Stream - This creature is used in a combo with Deeproot Elite and Merfolk Branchwalker to get that final blow of unblockable creatures.

Lords:
Deeproot Elite - If you have to save one of these guys from removal, save this guy. Mefolk Mistbinder is great, but Deeproot Elite gives you counters which is necessary for the Herald of Secret Stream combo.
Merfolk Mistbinder

Drop these cards strategically. If your opponent is tapped out or if they don't have a lot of cards on hand or if you have Admiral's Order on hand with enough lands, drop it. Try not to get them killed.

Card/Board Advantage:
Silvergill Adept - Decent draw, also a body.
Merfolk Branchwalker - Great for "drawing" lands or getting a +1/+1 counter on itself.
Chart a Course - Great draw as you will almost always be attacking.
Nissa, Steward of Elements - Nissa is great for getting board advantage. You get her out early for 3cmc and use her +2 ability. Then continuously use her 0 ability for more Merfolks or Land. In Late game, you can use up your mana to get 2, 3 or 4 loyalty points and use her 0 ability right away. This deck has a low mana curve and lots of creatures, so expect lots of creature drops and pump that River Sneak/ Deeproot Elite combo.
Seafloor Oracle - Combos well with unblockable creatures.

Defense:
Blossoming Defense - Still one of the best defensive/offensive card against removal
Heroic Intervention - For those nasty board wipes
Admiral's Order - Your friendly neighborhood counter card.
Kopala, Warden of Waves - Use this creature to redirect your opponent's attention from your unblockable creatures. They WILL have to remove it.

Deck discussion for Merfolk Standard

Yeah Nissa has some advantages over Kumena and I think Seeflor Oracle can replace its second ability because you are interested in going aggro than keeping 3 fish ready to spin for a card. Nissa can also act as Aether Vial replacement.

I dont know about Mist-Cloaked Herald while Kumena's Speaker may be abetter choice and a third Merfolk Branchwalker could also fit into it

I feel Mist-Cloaked Herald gives me a slight edge for early unblockable hits, it is however very dependent on the lords to hit any harder.

You are right about Kumena's speaker being slightly better than the herald as it gives the deck an early 2/2 on the board. Though, I feel it would just be a stalemate if the opponent has a creature of the same strength or more in turn 2 or up. i.e. a pumped Longtusk Cub. I will however test it more with Kumena's speaker, replacing the herald.

I have thought about putting in a 4th* Merfolk Branchwalker, but I feel River Sneak is still advantageous to have, hence I have 3 of each.

Thanks for the advice! =D
