Deck Description

A deck designed at drakeraenes's request for the Ultimate Deck Building Challenge.
I wanted to keep it modern legal since drakeraenes's original deck was, which is found here:
http://www.mtgvault.com/drakeraenes/decks/turn-4-kiora-99-kraken-combo/

Which uses the; Gilder Bairn, Training Grounds, Paradise Mantel combo that produces infinite counters.
I went the way of infinite turns by utilizing Sage of Hours as the main win condition. With back ups including Nissa as well as Transcendent Master.
I decided to have a slew of protection for the combo pieces as well as the win conditions in the form of Lightning Greaves and Blossoming Defence.
I had to include white for the main deck Path to Exile and my own personal don't go to a competitive tourney without them side board white cards.

How to Play

An optimal line of play but not limited too could go along the lines of this.
T1; green mana source, Noble Hierarch
T2; land, Lightning Greaves, Leave mana open for Blossoming Defence/Path, equip Hierarch.
T3; land, Paradise Mantel, Gilder Bairn, Equip Gilder Bairn with Mantel then Greaves leave mana open again for protection.
T4; Training Grounds, Sage of Hours target Sage of Hours then make as many counters as you wish and remove them for infinite turns. Note you can even target Sage with your own Path and still combo off. Since Sage gets the counter when you cast Path you can then respond to Path again with your Gilder Bairn adding all the counters and remove them at instant speed getting all the turns you want.

That's a nice build. I've been looking at taking the concept and updating it myself, and I'm currently working on a more current build. I mean, I build that deck right before JOU, so a lot has come out since then. Overall though, I love the inclusion of white. Gives it more of a viable feel I think. +1!

I adore how left field the combo is, for starters.
The originality and effectiveness are outstanding

The originality of the build itself is also something I admire quite a bit, yeah, this is a sick build my man

Well done

I love the main combo/engine but it feels like I'm missing the spark. How do you get the first counter on the sage, just Blossoming Defense?

Ya, Blossoming Defence or Path to Exile.

Path wouldn't accomplish anything except remove your creature and get you a land. You won't get the ability to proc his turns ability before he's exiled

Yes I would. Sage is a cast trigger. So I target Sage with Path then It's ability goes onto the stack before Path resolves. Allow the +1/+1 counter to resolve then activate the Gilder Bairn combo putting as many counters as want then remove counters to Sage's ability. Everything is instant speed and can be done before Path to Exile resolves. Heroic is a little like prowess that way, they both trigger on cast.

Stack manipulation is a tricky bitch, but every now and then it works in your favour. I assure you this is legal.

That's beyond tricky. You'd get a judge call if you did this across the table from all but the most experienced or rule savvy players

Correct me if I am wrong but wouldn't attaching an artifact to sage of hours count as targeting him with a spell? After all "attach to target creature only as a sorcery" which is a *spell*....

You could also use Emerge Unscathed on him unless you are counting on being able to exile him.

No. Equipping is an ability. "only as a sorcery"simply means you are limited as to when you can use the ability. Strictly as a main phase action, and only if nothing is on the stack.
