Deck Description

This is a work in progress based on Yuuki Ichikawa's Esper Mentor deck that won a 214 man back in March '15. The idea is similar but with a few tweaks and variations. I found that while the deck is really strong it is incredibly weak to burn (abrupt decay too at times). However the sideboard gives it a very good advantage over lightning bolt with Geist and Timely Reinforcements. What the Esper version of this deck loses compared to the Jeskai variant is to be expected, but what we gain in black is great in recouping that loss. Inquisition and Thoughtseize + Snap have proven to be just what I need in order to stick a turn 3 Mentor if needed, and the Mentor followed by a Sorin is usually always a win. Typically the deck runs Tar Pit for the man land slot, as the unblockable beats does help, but I found that with BFZ the Shambling Vents addition helps us stem the bleeding against burn a little bit more than the Pit. Overall this is a great deck, and I highly recommend you sleeve up your own versions to test out!

Deck discussion for Mon-esper-y Mentor

First off, you definitely get an A for your deck title. As for the deck, I think it looks mostly pretty, you have a nice balance of removal, card draw, and counterspells, and discard. My main suggestion is that I feel that running Thought Scour to put stuff into your graveyard to delve early when you have only three delve cards seems unnecessary, and if you want an instant that is one blue mana and lets you draw a card then there are better options. But, if that strategy works in your testing, go for it. Also I think shadow of a doubt, is a little irrelevant, and also there are better versions of it that do essentially the same thing (Aven Mindcensor). I would replace the shadow with either a thought seize or a spells kite.
Looks like a nice deck, Good Luck!

Thanks for the comment. I thought the title was perfect too! Thought Scour has been wonderful in testing. Hitting a Lingering Souls with Thought Scour is great basically giving me 2 cards including the draw. The big difference between my build and Ichikawa's is that he didn't run Gitaxian Probe, which seems like an oversight to me, because its fantastic in so many ways in the deck. So far I have probably put in between 20-25 games against Jund, USA Control, and Abzan and those are pretty great match-ups for me. The only match up that I know I have trouble against is Burn, but have yet to test against it or other faster match ups. I definitely like Spellskite in my board (one already in there) and two couldn't hurt for sure, because it hurts a lot of decks. If Shadow of Doubt doesn't play out for me in testing I will definitely go for another Skite! Thanks for the feedback!
