Pharagax Giant, Archetype of Aggression and Cyclops of Eternal Fury are cheap creature cards that I would consider.

Pharagax is either a 5/5 for 5 which is decent or a 5 damage burn spell and a 3/3 which is nice too.
Archetype of Aggression is a 3 drop something that is currently lacking in your deck which gives all your creatures trample and denies your opponent trample.
Cyclops of Eternal fury is expensive and not overly strong but he does give all your creatures haste so maybe he would be worthwhile to pick up the pace of the deck?

Fated Conflagration is a relatively cheap burn spell (0.25) with a cheapish mana cost that deals 5 damage and lets you scry 3 it might not be maindeck worthy but against certain decks it could have a lot of value so maybe sideboard?

Also maybe Ordeal of Purphoros? Its a decent pump card with the benefit of burning also.

Archetype of Aggression would be my pick of those. The I get/you lose trample is nice, but also nice is the 1RR. That helps devotion for the Fanatic of Mogis. I also really like Krenko's Enforcer as a three drop with double red devotion. His intimidate basically makes him the red version of a 2/2 flyer for 3. He would also fix a key issue with this deck, a budget red deck with NO goblins! Come on now, we can't have that :p

Yeah Krenko's Enforcer is cool but only if they aren't playing red and I have seen a hell of a lot of jeskai and temur and all sorts of decks lately that are playing enough red to just make this a 3 drop for a 2/2 which is kind of pricey I would consider sideboarding him and bringing him in against non red decks.

Yeah, if your facing a lot of red arch of aggy is the better bet. He could be swapped with the enforcer like you say against the right deck.

Hordeling outburst and stoke the flames?

0

that would raise the price a bit higher than it is supposed to be so it wouldn't be a budget deck due to stoke the flames.

0

It would be a lot better and not that much more expensive

I have a much faster deck than this and it is a green and black deck but at the same time it is below $38 It mills yourself then whips back for almost 20 dmg from lifelink per turn

Ye, this red deck is far too slow, curve should stop at 2-3 plus Stoke the Flames but that doesn't need mana. Aggro decks need to win turn 4-5 while also dodging a removal spell/fighting through one, this fails to do this, while its bombs get dealt with easily

yea with burn decks if you dont kill your opponent by turn 5 then your screwed usually

Any aggro, or they need to be like Jeskai tokens with Ascendancy or with U/W Heroic with Aquaous form

0
Posted 23 December 2014 at 20:29

yup that's what they need. Plus aggro is doing really bad right now due to three colors if your trying to do a three color aggro deck.

Mono-Red is fine and well, Heroic is performing powerfully, but the only 3 colour aggro is pretty similar to midrange, curving up to 5

Villainous wealth decks are very good though, Bennie Hill has been trying to get them on the scene. Personally the shell supporting it sorts the midrange decks out good and proper!

Yeah I've been reading Benjie's articles on his villainous wealth deck, and I really wanna play it. I don't have any of the cards in that deck though, and I'm in budget mode, playing U/W heroic with only basic lands. I'm done with that... I felt like it got boring to play with very quickly. Villainous Wealth seems like it would give a simply awesome feeling every time it resolves.

Ye, he makes it sound amazing, I'd love to try it, but I don't want to invest in something so expensive if it turns out he is exaggerating, Tom Ross said you can't do it with just basics, so that may be the issue you have!

0
Posted 27 December 2014 at 20:25

It's DEFINITELY the issue. I've been working on a red/blue burn deck that is much more fun to play, and decided to invest in that one instead.

I'm not sure counterburn is the best deck in current standard, check out mtg goldfish, got some good ideas there

0

It's not counterburn; there are no counters. It's really just heavy burn splashed with blue to draw cards. 2 Steam augury to draw and simultaneously fuel dig through time/ treasure cruise. It's kind of heavy on card draw, intending to never run out of cheap spells to throw at everything. It's also got swiftspear, rabblemaster, and prophetic flamespeaker (with titan's strengths); the deck is trying to overwhelm from different angles of attack. Nothing swiftspear into a burn or titan's strength turn two (:

wouldn't Jeskai Fireworks just be better?

0
Posted 27 December 2014 at 21:38

Won't know until I test it, but I think the fact that this deck has speed, versatility and most importantly, consistency, will win more matches than if I had tried for a jeskai build. And cheaper. Lands be expensiiiive

Trying to stay true to your original idea of a budget mono-red midrange deck, I'd make the following changes:

4 Generator Servant
4 Lightning Strike
3 Magma Jet
3 Tormenting Voice
3 Hammer of Purphoros
4 Minotaur Skullcleaver
4 Flame-Wreathed Phoenix - $1/Each
3 Fanatic of Mogis
4 Flurry of Horns
4 Soul of Shandalar - $1/Each
4 Radiant Fountain
20 Mountain

Outside of Stormbreath Dragon and Sarkhan, Dragonspeaker, there's really not any great 5-mana spells to ramp into on turn 3 in red via Generator Servant. In comes Flurry of Horns. I think it's not incredible, but it has to be good enough working within your limitations.

I added in Soul of Shandalar and Flame-Wreathed Phoenix for your top-end. Soul is just an incredible magic card and a great pickup at $1. Before Soul of Theros and Innistrad started seeing Standard play, a lot of people were hyping Soul of Shandalar. It's a 6/6 FIRST STRIKER. You'll block with Hornet Queen and all her tokens? Let's resolve First Strike damage: 1 to each of the insects and 2 at the queen. Thanks. You'll block with two Siege Rhinos and a Satyr Wayfinder? Kill a Rhino, kill the Satyr, let's move to combat damage?

Flame-Wreathed Phoenix is also a fine pickup at a buck each (possibly lower) that is either a 5/5 for four or a 3/3 Haste that returns to your hand when it dies. It's the closest you'll come to Ashcloud/Chandra power-level at this price-range.

Tormenting Voice helps you filter your draws and gives you something to do in the early game alongside burning any early plays from your opponent and playing Servant. It also lets you ditch Soul of Shandalar (which you don't want clogging your hand early).

Minotaur Skullcleaver is just the best beat-stick you're going to buy at 3-mana. If you can afford them, Prophetic Flamespeakers are excellent card draw and devotion providers. I'd shift several things around if you can snag some, including upping the count on Fanatic of Mogis to a 4-of.

Radiant Fountain comes in because... this deck is slow. It's red. But it's slow. There's no turn 5-6 kills lying around here. Either you live long enough to see the mid to late game and win during it or you die.

Best of luck in Standard, NorthernWarlord. I don't know that Coordinated Assault and Spawn of Thraxes belong in the same deck, but maybe you know something I don't.

Hi NorthernWarlord, I like your decks. You have great deckbuilding skills, and for that reason, I come to you in search of council.

I think this is a great idea for standard but it needs some kick! Budget all the way. Take a look for me?

This deck has a very strange mana curve. I would recommend putting in 4 foundry street denizens for the extra attack.

the only bad thing about this deck is the mana curve, northern i would make this deck aggro full of burn spells

I somewhat agree with MTGduke in here. More burn in a Mono-red is, well, essentual. It's like using kill spells in black.
Also, I have a new budget deck that I would like some advice on:

I'm with Sorin, you don't just say 'Look at my deck.' You try and support people before, plus if your advice is good then people are more likely to look as you seem like a better player cu you gave decent advice. The curve here is dodgy, especially when mana cost good stuff is currently 5 in standard. I probably came off very harsh in my previous comments, so apologies for that!
