Deck Description

This deck is my take on R/G modern land destruction.
It's terribly fun to play but extruciatingly terrible for my opponents dropping a turn 3 inferno titan or turn 2 blood moon disrupts many decks.

Please help me and come with concrete ideas into making this a tournament winning deck. Right now its mainly the sideboard i need to work on and also i have 2-3 "open" card slots in the deck making it a 62-63 card deck.

How to Play

Just make sure you have some kind of mana ramp in your starting hand and your fine.
The sideboard is super important and if played correctly i feel this deck has a good chance against most decks out there right now.

Just need to get the sideboard correct and versatile enough for all challenges!

I'm actually testing a similar deck at the moment. I've found that, while Fracturing Gust is awesome against robots / Affinity, there's one big down side to it: it destroys Utopia Sprawl.

Mainboard, I'm personally not found of Beast Within. Most games I've drawn it, the beast token was a bit of a threat when Beast Within was played too early (mostly to destroy a land during the opponent's upkeep).

Lastly, do you know why this deck runs Stone Rain over Molten Rain? I know why I don't run Molten Rain, just curious to hear why you don't.

Personally I run both. The value of Goblin Dark Dwellers and Stone/Molten Rain is fun stuff. Also flashes back a beast within.

About the fracturing gust yes that is a downside however its such a mana heavy spell you will normally only cast it later in the game when you dont "need" the mana ramp as much so I am still test playing it and seeing how it plays out.

I personally love the beast within however it's important to know how to play it right . You only want to cast it on the opponents more important threats and not their lands. Also its good if you need and extra creep you can cast it on your thrun (regen your thrun ofc) or a land and get a 3/3 into play.

Well it's all about the ramp. You want to always be able to cast your land destruction and since the deck only runs 3x stomping, 1 mountain and 2 bops its not always guaranteed you are sitting with 2 red at turn 2 and since you want a guaranteed 2nd turn cast you want to run stone rain.

I only run one Fracturing Gust in my sideboard for that very reason.

I've found that a lot of the time, even if I only targeted his threat with Beast Within, the 3/3 left over, while less of a threat, has still been a problem in some matchups. Beast Within followed up by a Mizzium Mortars (which I'm using instead of Bonfire of the Damned) feels counter productive as I'm wasting two cards to get rid of one. Modern is full of cheap removal (Path to Exile), so even with a Moon out, there are a lot of matchups where they manage to remove my big beasties, making the token a problem. Just my experience with the version of this deck that I've been testing.

That's exactly why I run Stone over Molten. That {R}{R} is very limiting.

Maybe when I get back from WMCQ this September, if I remember to then. It's what I plan on playing and I don't want my list to get out just yet.

What do you think about the surgical extraction? I feel it's very strong against decks that revolve around 3-4 key cards or vs control decks to remove those pesky counters alt. thoughtseizes and such.

Have you tried running choke in your sideboard? It's suprisingly strong in this format

Surgical Is a strong card, but I'm not sure it's absolutely necessary here, or at least not in my build.

I currently don't have Choke, so I haven't had a chance to test it. I think the best matchup it'd come in against is Fish. Land a Moon and Choke and their mana is screwed. I'd also side in two Ancient Grudge to get rid of Æther Vial.

what do you reccomend as a substitute for beast then?

This deck looks pretty close to what I've come to after playing it for a the last year. A few tweaks after the last standard sets but pretty close.
Honestly I feel that 2 Blood Moon and 2 Magus of the Moon is better because Magus can be a clock if need be.
I haven't tried stormbreath dragon yet, I feel like I should, but I don't know if I can justify dropping it since I personally run both Stone Rain and Molten Rain, since both are 3 cmc and can be flashed back by Dark Dwellers.
Beast Within is nice because it is instant speed and deals with more than just land, but I feel like if you don't have a fattie in hand you're just asking to get punished by that 3/3.
How has Chandra Pyromaster been working for you? She seems good for the 0 ability, but her ultimate seems really low impact in this deck and her +1 can be okay, but generally isn't. I think Garruk Wildspeaker is better since you can ult him with a bunch of Elves and birds in play and kill them that way.

Here's a link to my version;

I'd really like to hear what you think based on how you put yours together.
I'd love to know how Stormbreath has performed for you since I've been seriously considering finding room for it in my deck. I'd also like to hear how Pyromaster and mainboard Bonfire has been for you.

I love these types of decks though, +1 from me!

Hey there, thanks for the great response!

Im not to sure on the Magus since I feel many decks have alot of creature removal and can easily be bolted if need be and just doesn't feel as consistent as a blood moon. How do you feel he works out for you?

Yes, I have tried that setup but I felt the Molten Rains were too inconsistent on needing double red for your turn 2 pang a land. Might try it out again and fit in my 3 goblin dark-dwellers again but i feel that the life gain from baloth and thragtusk is very important vs strong and fast aggro decks.
Our main "weakness" is really aggro decks and Eldrazi. They are the only hard matchups really.

I only cast beast within if I feel that the threat is greater than a 3/3 beast.. If you can balance those options I find it life saving alot of games!

Stormbreath has won me quiet a few games actually where the protection from white has came in handy. I dont often get to monstrous it as often as I would like but this im not too sure, it feels more like a flex card to me and if I find a better creature this is gonna be one of the first to go.. Still testing it!

I run the Chandra mainly for the extra card draw . She has no problem surviving with a few fatties protecting her.
Her +1 is "ok" and her ulti is useless really. But this deck as you may have noticed has problems with the card draw and it's really between her and harmonize where i find Chandra has more value.
Yes you are right about the garruk being slightly more useful but he does not offer the important card draw option.
I might actually try 1x Garruk and 1x Chandra and see how it plays out.

The bonfire is a must have in the deck. It's great against ALOT of decks out there and the burn to both player and creeps has won me countless games. I have seen people running 4x but I feel that you want to draw it a bit later in the game and 4x is just gonna have you draw it more often then you want.
Possibly even running 2x could be viable.
Will need to test this more and see.

Stormbreath's prot' white makes Path to exile useless on it; its cmc makes Abrupt Decay useless; and it's p/t makes a single Lightning Bolt useless. Basically, it comes in against majority of the staple Modern removal.

Chandra's [+1] doesn't only ping mana dorks, it also helps your beasties to attack unblocked, which is especially useful for Goblin Dark-Dwellers as it has Menace; and Inferno Titan as its attack effect will ping most of the smaller stuff before blockers can be declared.

As I've stated already, I personally use Mizzium Mortars in Bonfire's slot. I've found it to be more reliable.
