Deck Description

This is a Kira EDH deck i made that revolves around keeping your creatures out and keeping board control. I run counter spells and board wipes to help keep the board down and i play some extra turn cards to get in multiple swings.

I am hoping to receive advice for the deck because i am semi-new to EDH.

How to Play

early game you want to get out a 2 or 3 drop out then drop kira. You should have a turn before the opponent has a decent answer to the creatures so you can either build your board state (artifact, creature, enchantment, etc) or save mana for a counter. From there just keep countering their strong creatures and continue to build your board state until you A. Have a decent size army B.Have a strong creature C. you just boardwiped from being behind. For A and B use extra turns to get huge hits in and for C just rinse and repeat until you get A or B.

There's a lot in a macro sense here that will cause you issues. You're running mono-blue control (hated), with a non-interactive commander (frustrating), running just generic goodstuff cards (boring and unimaginative) with no wincon (so everyone can play a hated archetype against a frustrating commander in a boring and unimaginative shell for a really, really long time with no end in sight). I can't speak for all playgroups, but this deck crops up in my playgroup and everyone just rolls their eyes, brings out their best decks, and kills you over and over and over until you stop showing up or you build something interesting.

All that said:

40 total lands is probably too many for a mono deck with a fairly low curve. I'd cut to 38, and long-term with tuning I bet you find you're fine at 37 or maybe even 36.

Replace Ghost Quarter with Strip Mine. Strip is like three bucks or something, and is way better.

Terrain Generator is probably worth running here. The colorless mana is almost never going to hurt you, you've got a ton of basics to play and plenty of draw, and since you to be running draw/go you'll have EOT mana to use.

You don't have a ton of permanents, but since you're mono you probably have enough for a Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx.

Spellbook isn't terrible, but I personally would rather spend 2 on Thought Vessel and have it be a mana rock, especially since you have such limited ramp.

Jace's Sanctum is probably going to save you more mana than Basalt Monolith generates, plus the scry trigger is nice.

For one more mana than Onvinize you could run Polymorphist's Jest which will do the same thing, gets around hexproof, and can function as a fog (more or less) if need be.

Cunning Wish doesn't work in EDH since there's no board.

I did to start the very first comment: "There's a lot in a macro sense here that will cause you issues. I'm not saying you can't run mono-blue control, or that you can't run non-interactive decks, or that you can't run generic goodstuff, or that you can't play decks without a clear concise path to victory. I just think combining all those things together is a recipe for problems.

Maybe you don't care about those issues. Maybe your playgroup doesn't. But in a general sense it's worth pointing out even if perhaps it winds up not being a factor in your particular corner of the table.

I am a player who loves playing blue. Iv'e been playing since return to ravnica and iv'e always loved playing blue control, blue black, and most other control decks (esper, grixis, etc). When i got into EDH i used the grixis starter deck and liked the format. So i want to get into EDH more and build my own deck for it so i decided to play kira becuase i love her ability (on the inside i guess i am that player at groups) and on one hand yeah i love to play this deck style but i also want others to have fun with it. This is the second deck ive made for EDH and im happy that you posted and i know about these concerns.

There's two angles here:

1. Philosophical: Someone once said "EDH is a game you play with people, not against people". In that sense, you want to kind of take into consideration everyone else at the table in a way you don't really care about in 1v1. That isn't to say we should all play carebear group hugs or anything. After all, maybe your playgroup loves cutthroat stax decks where you can barely breath. If that's their jam then playing that style -is- in fact playing with people. You just need to understand the group and how your deck/style works within that framework.

For example I would argue that Rhystic Study should probably be in every blue deck simply based on power. It's insane in multi-player EDH. But it's also really, really, really, really annoying to ask if they paid one mana after every single spell. As such, I've intentionally made it a point to only run it in 2 of my six decks capable of running it to minimize being annoying (and because it's kind of boring running the same cards in every deck).

2. Practical: Even if philosophically you don't care about the whole "play with not against people" thing, there's practical, tactical reasons to still bear that in mind. To use my Rhystic Study example from above not only do I not want to be annoying to my friends by running it every single time I'd argue that there is strategic advantage in not being annoying.

As for whether or not it has to run smoother I'm not really sure how you alter the fundamental problems with playing Kira goodstuff control. Maybe you don't want to alter them or don't care. That's totally legit. I'm just pointing out they exist.

But for me it sucks because i dont have a play group, i usually just play with a friend that plays EDH (he runs a eldrzi with 4 titans) or casually with people at my local shop (rarely). I want to have a deck to play with people and since i dont really have a group i play with a variety of diffrent players.

That sucks.

Me and a friend of mine kinda forced an EDH night at my local store. The two of us just started showing up on Tuesday and playing each other, and eventually another couple people started showing since we were there every week, then the store started advertising it, and now we have 20-30 people showing up regularly.

Originally a store called Nomad in Eau Claire, WI, but after the owner started acting like a jackass we moved the whole playgroup to the District Company. Great place: https://www.facebook.com/jointhedistrict/
