Another item that is pretty cheap CMC-wise. (Not one, mind you). Would be Impact Tremors. Get that out early and you have an easy 1 damage per creature you drop.

Goblin Arsonist is also a fun target for things such as Goblin Grenade. At least one extra point of damage when he dies.
Possibly Pathbreaker Ibex? If you could sub out some of your sorceries/instants for permanents "Primal Surge" is fun.
Burnished Hart, Yavimaya Elder, Into the Wilds, Solemn Simulacrum, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Realm Seekers, Fertilid. Just some ideas. I decided to go that route with my Shatterbang Bros EDH, and it's pretty funny. Especially with the creature line up you have. Competitive or not you would smash everything haha
Sub out everything for permanents and throw in Primal Surge. Fun fun fun :D
I would like to point out that the controller of the equipment is the one who maintains control of the triggers of Assault Suit. YOU get to choose where he goes. You also gain back control of him at end of turn anyways, so if you need him as a blocker then you can have him.
I agree with this comment. Maybe not a counter per-say. However having some sideboarded protection is never a bad idea against burn.

I love the idea of the land recursion to constantly harm the opponent. I'm assuming items such as Crucible of Worlds would not be viable for budget reasons?

One suggestion I have would be Assault Suit. It gives you the ability to pass Zurgo to your opponents when it is not your turn.
