GUYS, THIS CARD IS WORTH SO MUCH BECAUSE YOU CAN KILL ON THE FIRST TURN WITH IT. ONE OF THE "Power Nine" Method: Play One Land, play this, then play any high level card you want (e.g. mountain, black lotus, kark's thumb, mana clash= win.)

Suply and demand buddy. There are very few alpha edition black lotuses out there, and there are some people with a lot of money to spend that REALLY want these things and are willing to pay that much to get them. The price of this card doesn't go off of playability, but off of collectability. It's the most iconic magic the gathering card in existence and will always be stupidly expensive.

For those interested, there is a format with no restriction and you use 40 cards, people in that format really have lots of those cards. I learned about it a month ago from an oldschool player :)
