Deck Description

Do you want to play Commander without spending hundreds of dollars on a deck? Do you like new Commanders from new sets? (Dominaria United was released at the time of the decklist release.) Are you that terrible friend in your play group that plays discard? Do you like birds? How often do you have to talk your way out of turning your Commander games into Archenemy goes so you aren't taken out? Well, cone with me so I may introduce you to The Raven Man. Lim-Dûl is normally known for his Vault, but has been haunting Liliana for some time. Now, he's back to unleash his enigmatic plans. In order to accomplish them, he wants you to shred the memories and dreams of your opponents to pieces, so he can use the pieces for some mysterious magic. The pact with the Raven Man is sealed. Go forth, and commit his Raven's Crimes.

How to Play

The Raven Man gives us access to a Raven (1/1 bird token with flying that can't block) each end step if someone discarded. So, the plan is to slowly shred hands and go wide with Ravens to eventually whittle everyone's life totals to zero. We use Megrim, Shrieking Affliction, Davriel, and Raiders' Wake to speed up the process on life totals. We also have crammed in as much budget discard as we can to constantly generate discard on our turns, with some niche flash speed discard to keep the Ravens coming.

Our finishers are Ravens EVERYWHERE, previously discussed Enchantments, Sepulchral Primordial, Necrogoyf, and good 'ol Gary of Asphodel. Most of the time, our enchantments will be the work horses, but never be afraid to just full send aggro if our opponents have no hands. One of the joys of this deck is that our opponents can't really stop us with no cards in hand.

Now, to address the elephant in the room: the Archenemy effect. What is this? It's when everyone groups up to take you out first. This can be for MANY reasons, but discard decks tend to have this curse. No one WANTS to play entire games with cards in hand, and since that's our gameplan, be prepared to be targeted. In a budget, it's incredibly hard to manage this since all of our good cards are out of our price range. The best thing I can recommend is working on your ability to talk your way out of situations. Also, try to not just keep casting discard spells every turn to encourage your table that you aren't the threat. Sometimes, you have to play the long game and let other players be the threat. We can come around with removal, so hold it tight until absolutely necessary so you can overcome in the end.
