Phyrexian Evolution

by Cryptkeeper03 on 23 January 2018

Main Deck (60 cards)

Sideboard (15 cards)

Enchantments (1)

Submit a list of cards below to bulk import them all into your sideboard. Post one card per line using a format like "4x Birds of Paradise" or "1 Blaze", you can even enter just the card name by itself like "Wrath of God" for single cards.

Deck Description

The original idea of this deck was to capitalize on Phyrexian Obliterator's ability to force permanents to disappear on your opponent's side of the field by using the "fight" mechanic. Eldritch evolution will consume any of the two-drop creatures and push out a Phyrexian Obliterator, which by the name, you should know how this is going to play out.

Side deck is completely up in the air. Creeping Corrosion assists with Affinity, but I haven't completely figured out how I want to deal with Merfolk, Burn, Infect, Tron, and Death's Shadow.

birthing pod too. allows you to chuck it in as a surprise during combat. Also if you ditch removal and go pump spells, they swing with a 3,3 you go phyrexian oblit to block, then pump their Creature to a 10/10 they sac 10 perms.

Unfortunately, Birthing Pod is banned in Modern zakcheese1 :/ http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Printings.aspx?multiverseid=218006

As a fan of budget decks, I would recommend Bloodbriar, Archfiend of Depravity, and Rot Shambler. But this deck is still pretty awesome for a pretty penny, I absolutely love Green Black Sac and Phyrexian Obliterator.

As far as the big baddiez go, I think I want to Obliterator to be the Apex of what I'm trying to do, win by having thee opposition remove their permanents because of his BAMF ability. I was scrolling through cards that can make creatures fight when they ETB, didn't see any worthwhile enchantments or artifacts; however, I'm not sure if its too much of a stretch to splash a little white for Dromoka's Command. Pounce and Prey Upon are obvious things to retrofit this deck for as well. http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Search/Default.aspx?text=+[fight]&color=|[B]|[G]&format=["Modern"]&type=+[Instant]

If you need 2 drops to sac Golgari Thug would be a better target than Scooze, maybe a 3-3-2 mix between the 2 drops. As a 1 of Asceticism is probably better than lilly giving your win con and Faerie Macabre is almost mandatory for your side board. 1 Surgical Extraction will ruin your deck. Also I feel like Chord of Calling would be better than slip given the number of creatures you run, if you fight something bigger than you who cares? That's more they lose. I also noticed that Ulvenwald Tracker has been removed. This guy is better than Prey Upon by far and if they waste removal on him then who care's, that 1 less card the much scarier creatures you have no longer have to worry about.

As for your side board.

Merfolk: Chalice and spreading seas are the only worry so ether another Pulse or Abrupt Decay.
Burn: Collective Brutality or 4 Leyline of Sanctity.
Infect: Night of Souls' Betrayal is an auto win if it lands.
Tron: This is an odd match up and it depends on what type your facing. There is always the Fulimantor/Surgical combo. To be honest though as long as you deal with the walkers and hold Oblit until they drop a big creature you just win. What good is Ulamog if you drop Oblit and have it fight?
Death's shadow: This an amazing matchup for you because who cares how big it gets, it's just more they lose.

Also thinking that Bob isn't that good here but that's just me. Underworld Connections or Read the Bones are alternatives.

I'm feeling what you're putting down dude. I definitely need to vary the two drops. 2 Thugs would be sufficient for me and I'm definitely going to vary the two-drops. 1 Asceticism would be nice, I'll see about taking the prey upon copies out and throwing in the tracker. I really like the feedback I've received from you with the side board. Thanks dude. Tron is definitely going to be a hard one pending their style. We'll see. "Bob"?

Bob=Dark Confidant. It's the name of the player that made him after winning nationals.

Not sure about the aethrborn but it does give you easy trades if Grim Flayer isnt online so w/e, I do like it a bit better than thug and I feel like your a tad creature heavy now. Maybe cut the thugs and add 1 more tracker and a land. I STILL don't like tragic slip here. Also considering on the money you're will to drop I HAVE to ask about that land base.

I already own everything on the list, from previous collections I've had. I had to drop a few bucks for the abrupt decay, but that's about it. You really don't like slip, huh? :p

It's just not that good. Fatal and Abrupt can take care of most things in modern. If anything I would replace them with Blossoming or the instant fight card you had before. I would at least invest in 3 Hissing Quagmire. Man Lands are fairly cheap.

to accelerate the deck, why not include some Birds of Paradise? that way on turn 3 you can easily have your Obliterator on the field.
Otherwise.....other than Dark Ritual (in legacy/vintage)....theres nothing really useful you can do...too bad Deathrite Shaman is banned from Modern or it would have done wonders! Urborg, Tomb and Filter lands are must when playing Obliterator.

I really really love Phyrexian Obliterator and it really deserve a full deck focused around him!

Valid point to accelerate the deck.
- Turn 1: Birds and Forest
- Turn 2: Birds and Two Forest (3 mana to play with, but I can't use Eldritch Evolution to fetch the Obliterator yet), so play any of the two-drop creatures
- Turn 3: Birds, three forest, and two-drop creature. Use Eldritch Evolution on two-drop, fetch obliterator, have additional mana to play with

RIP Deathrite Shaman...*cue Fort Minor's "Where'd you go?"*

Dude I know! Obliterator is so clutch and I just want to see him in a playable format and actually do things!

if you want to include some white cards, Saving Grace is absolutely wonderful with Obliterator

Right on! That would be pretty gnarly. I think the build up above is pretty solid as it stands now. I want to see how this will fair against the top-tier modern decks out there in the wild

Withstand Death is something that could be amazing to protect your Obliterator, especially if your intentions are to make him fight, or just to protect him against removal spell.....Heroic Intervention could also works but cost 2 instead of 1.

Blossoming Defense is what comes to mind as my first option, and Vines of Vastwood isn't shabby at all. I'd rather my Obliterator not be able to become the target of a spell, vice him still being able to be targetable and just indestructible. Both at the 1 drop level.

Setessan tactics and Predatory urge are pretty neat. Have you considered golgari charm to regen Obliterator?
Also a slightly different tacitic. see Destined//Lead, Alluring scent, Irresistible Prey, Roar of the Challenge (love this one), Revenge of the hunted... Again controlling the opponents actions.

I have tried Setessan tactics before and it didn't bode well :/ Predatory Urge being a 4 drop as well, and an enchantment doesn't excite me; however, if I could keep my Obliterator out longer it would. I just need 1 - 2 successful fights with obliterator and I have the game. I had a friend play my "Scabiez" deck, a U/B Standard Control deck with the Scarab God at the helm. Tragic slip, Fatal Push, Path to Exile are a sonofabitch against obliterator. Burn decks haven't been too much of a nuisance for this deck, but those very cheap removal spells kick me in the nadz again and again. I'm thinking the best option might be to remove the two pounce, and find a playset of Destined//Lead since it over the indestructible option (even though that won't help against stat modifier cards like Tragic slip). Roar of Challenge is fun, I might find a way to take out one Prey Upon and just add that in.
