Deck discussion for Infinite Extort

Its actually technically not infinite and it is legal. It triggers til your opponent(s) die.

Thank you snake for clearing this up! I guess because each loss of life has to resolve for the next loss of life to trigger, the fact that its only 1 life at a time is what makes this a legal combo! I was told that it was infinite and we decided not to play it in monday nights at our group.
:3

Much grattude

BTW, btw just a few dumb ass questions....

What do you have to stop a blue mill/counter deck form nuking all of your guildmages as soon as you play them?

I dont see any retrieval in your sidebord if you dont have the white manna to trigger the combo when you drop you could also have a problem with kill spells such as piller of flame...

Seening as your playing white it might be an idea to add rest in peace to the sidebord to stop any pesky reanimater decks?

According to this guy,

http://blogs.magicjudges.org/rulestips/2012/05/exquisite-blood-sanguine-bond-end-the-game-once-your-opponent-loses-life-or-you-gain-any/

Sanguine Bond + Exquisite Blood is a legal combo, so unless someone has a Platinum Angel or something like that out, you win once you gain life due to a sort of infinite loop, though it can still be countered/destroyed it's still pretty awesome. Though I do like this deck a lot, since it has the potential to do just about the same thing for much cheaper, which is nice.

It is infinite with vizkopa

0
Posted 10 January 2015 at 14:06

Yes, but you need Exquisite Blood to close the infinite loop. You play both vizkopa and Exquisite Blood (not exactly at the same time so that your opponent sees what your doing), then activate vizkopa's second ability, then have the opponent lose a life or you gain a life to start the loop.

Very smart deack. I like it alot. it will be very annoying to people with bigger creatures. But it looks very open to flying.

0

That can be easily taken care of by swinging with High Priest of Penance. If an opponent is arrogant enough to block and kill him you choose a nonland permanent and destroy it; plus, all of the low cost removal. This is a possible (with the rite cards) a turn 5 - 7 win.

YYYYYEEEAAAARRHHH!

But seriously I LOVE Orzhov. The new extort mechanic is so devious and fun and annoying, because there is no way to stop it beyond countering spells, and you can't counter everything!

1
Posted 31 January 2013 at 06:00

Actually, countering spells doesn't stop extort either; you may pay W/B for each instance of extort you have on the field and each one puts a trigger on the stack. It's a separate ability from the card that you are playing/spell that you are casting, so even if that gets countered, the extort can still trigger regardless (unless you are dead as in at 0 life or below without you can not lose the game or similar effects- in which case as a state-based effect you automatically lose and the extort does not trigger and life drain/net you life). This is the power of extort! Really rocked at my prerelease.

0

countering the spell does not stop the extort effect from happening

0
Posted 21 February 2013 at 02:02

yea extort is evil...the only way i was able to live was to put pariah on an indestructible creature...and that still prolonged my suffering

0
Posted 10 March 2013 at 16:20

pariah redirects damage, not loss of life. Damage results in loss of life, Loss of life however is not damage. So pariah on an indestructible creature would not prevent extort

sure thing pal.....I run the modern deck effectively. Its all about how you support it. It will not work in aggro, but in control, its magical.

0

I love the deck but your low cost removal should not include devour flesh since A. your opponents get to choose what they sac, and then B. they gain life from what they sac. put in doomblades, they are very reliable and proved effective. another is that this is a WHITE black deck. those decks are never complete without O-rings. its only a three cost card and exiles instead of destroying. All in all you've got yourself a nice deck, but you definitely need to fix your removal.

0
Posted 31 January 2013 at 04:51

you suggest some valid points that make sence and i will tinker around with the O Ring thought. The only thing you're wrong on is that Doomblades aren't standard anymore.

1

use Ultimate Price or Murder.

0
Posted 31 January 2013 at 06:36

I think that devour is fine for early removal. For one, when used early, they aren't gaining that much life. Another point is that this deck is intending to use an infinite kill combo...so it doesn't really matter how much life they have, as long as you get the combo on board before they kill you. Also, preventing them from achieving early creature advantage buys this deck the time it needs to start grinding them down. In a pinch, it can also be used targeting yourself for some emergency lifegain, or even to block with a creature that will die when it blocks, and then sacrifice it to devour flesh. The blocked creature will deal no damage, assuming no trample of course, and you gain life. Seems like something the Orzhov would do.

Add blind obedience. It slows down aggro decks, is relatively cheap, and has extort on it.

0

This deck could work with blood artist but it isn't quite a good fit, as the idea here is to control and extort to death, hopefully with the instant-win combo; having Blood Artist could speed up this deck/give more leverage vs. aggro though.

0
Posted 31 January 2013 at 14:40

I felt Blood Artist just didn't fit the tempo of this deck. If I were to use a card like Blood Artist I would go with a different infinite damage combo that isn't standard. It consists of Falkenrath Nobel, 2 Myr Retrievers and Heartless Summoning.

You can win the first game, but since your opponent will know what you are up to he will just kill the guildmage or counter/destroy the enchantment on the second/third game...

0
Posted 31 January 2013 at 19:21

There isn't all that much enchantment removal aside from detention sphere and oblivion ring, and killing the guildmage doesn't do squat if he is pulling of the combo since the ability is on the stack even if he dies it still activates, and if you do it before he activates the ability, he can just activate it in response

i believe the "loop" between exquisite blood and vizkopa guildmage will cause the game to be a draw. Rules 104.3b- If a player's life total is 0 or less, he or she loses the game the next time a player would receive priority. 104.4b If a game that's not using the limited range of influence option (including a two-player game) somehow enters a "loop" of mandatory actions, repeating a sequence of events with no way to stop, the game is a draw. Loops that contain an optional action don't result in a draw.

-1
Posted 31 January 2013 at 22:38

the action can be stopped, and therefore is not infinite. furthermore, every time a trigger occurs, both players recieve priority to respond to the trigger.
Conisidering there has yet to be an official ruling on Vizkopa Guildmage, and the item in question is exactly the same as Sanguine Bond, Ill use that ruling:

10/1/2009 Sanguine Bond's ability triggers just once for each life-gaining event, whether it's 1 life from Soul Warden or 8 life from Tendrils of Corruption.

therefore if you activate the ability, play Exquisite Blood, then Extort, each time life is gained, its lost. after each event, priority is passed, and the loop resets

Ninja you've had my back the whole time and have made multiple comments on this deck defending its legality and giving exerts from official rules. I appreciate it thank you.

5
Posted 31 January 2013 at 23:17

No worries man. I run the same combo in Modern with Sanguine Bond. Its legal there, and legal here.

6
Posted 31 January 2013 at 23:28

There is not one trigger. There are two.
Extort for 1 Life.
You lose 1 Life So I gain 1 Life. (Trigger 1)
I gain 1 life and you Lose 1 Life (Trigger 2)
And they cycle and alternate. down to X where X is the opponents life total.
Since Each Trigger can be responded to E.G. Everyone can cast spells between the triggers (respectively instants and sorcery APNAP conditionally)

This is if anything a "Soft" infinite loop. Rather than a "Hard Loop" Like say Casting Oblivion ring with no valid targets. Then casting Oblivion Ring on the Oblivion Ring, Then Casting a third and targeting the second Oblivion Ring. THAT meets the criteria of infinite loop. Since there is no way to respond unless the active player plays a target-able permanent. In which case if they do not, and they pass turn. The match ends in a draw.

Cavern of souls against counter decks to make sure the guildmage hits the board? Don't know what to do about creature removal or burn though. Avacyn's mask to make it hexproof, if you can get it equipped before they burn it down or otherwise kill it, maybe.

1
Posted 14 February 2013 at 07:12

This deck is easily beatable. Simple burn spells or fight mechanics can destroy the Ghast and guildmage, being as they are both only 2/2.
I can only see this being a casual play deck.

New to MTG here!!! Just bought the Orzhov Oppression deck and feeling lost. So I guess I'm just looking for a bit of an explanation. [Sorry for the length of the post!!]

If I'm understanding this correctly: I get the Guildmage out. Then get Exquisite Blood out as soon as I can. Then (assuming I have an extort creature already out) I pay mana for the Guildmage's second ability ((Whenever you gain life this turn, each opponent loses that much life)) followed by payment for an extort.

So this creates a kind of feedback where I am constantly gaining one life, therefore "pinging" my opponent for one life (which causes me to gain one life, etc)?

Once this goes into effect, the game ends unless...??? And what happens if I have two Extort creatures out and use Extort twice or more?

Sorry for all the questions, and hope someone followed along my rant and can provide some answers! Maybe a play-by-play breakdown/explanation would help. Would really, really appreciate it!

TL/DR: How does this deck operate? I'm too new and oblivious to understand.

1
Posted 18 February 2013 at 22:06

Whenever you gain life, your opponent loses life, whenever he loses life, you gain life. So all you have to do is somehow gain life, which is easily done with extort, but also by lifelink.

Then you win, unless your opponent can stop you from gaining life with an instant (Skullcrack).

Cute deck, but there are some major fixes you could make to make the deck better. For example, you have Killing Glare in the deck when Murder is strictly better. You're using Pacifism even though everyone is playing Restoration Angel. You're using Crypt Ghast yet you only have 8 swamps in your deck. You have no card drawing or tutor effects to search out your combo pieces, and nothing to protect them while they're in play. Instead of going half-white, why not just make mono-black control, with the Vizkopa combo as your win condition, and Griselbrand as a secondary win-con to go with Crypt Ghast.

4 Vizkopa Guildmage
2 Exquisite Blood
2 Increasing Ambition
4 Vampire Nighthawk
3 Murder
4 Victim of Night
3 Ultimate Price
4 Crypt Ghast
3 Griselbrand
4 Mutilate
2 Faith's Shield
17 Swamp
4 Isolated Chapel
4 Godless Shrine

2 Increasing Ambition allow us to not have to max out Exquisite Blood, which are redundant if drawn in multiples, and gives more flexibility to search for other cards when the situation demands. Murder, Victim of Night, and Ultimate Price is your removal trifecta, with Mutilates to wipe the board. Vampire Nighthawk, Cryptghast and Griselbrand provide the lifegain to start the combo, while all being fine cards on their own. Griselbrand and Vizkopa Guildmage also combo well together, allowing you to deal an additional 7 damage to the opponent whenever Griselbrand deals damage to anything. 2 Faith's Shield help you protect your combo pieces from removal, including Exquisite Blood. I recommend having some more in the sideboard for when they bring in their enchantment removal.

Great deck, Im running the same kind, but less focused on the infinite combo.
1) I would sideboard the blind obediences and replace them with oblivion rings, the tap effect really only helps against aggro decks that have haste creatures, beyond that it is just a 2 mana card with extort
2) I would reduce crypt ghast, high priest, and basilica guards to 3 and add in either 3 syndic of the tithes or 3 basilica screechers
3) In terms of a sideboard when you get to it I would recommend 3-4 nevermores, 2 rest in peaces, 3-4 devour fleshes, and 2 witchbane orbs. Nevermore is an amazing sideboard card with the limited amount of ways to remove it. Rest in peace depends if you have any graveyard decks in your meta, though with the glories rise "infinite" combo there is a good chance. Devour flesh deals with those nasty hexproof creatures like geist and lavar. Finally witchbane orb actually helps against mill decks since you can stop jace from targeting you for mill which is most mill decks main source of mill.
Hope this was helpful, and would appreciate comments on my own deck:

Not only would it condense your strategy but you would get cards faster than your opponent
The only problem is it's two B mana. However, I think you could pull it off.

You should not gain my like because your deck name mislead me to believe that you had created a way to invoke infinite times extort. =(
But you'll gain it anyway because it is so cool that I must ignore my stupid reasoning.

Nice one, I'll test the core combo of your deck and see what kind of deck I can make.

Ty for the like and good luck incorporating the core mechanics into your own deck.

I love the deck, it was the base of my very own Orzhov deck, though mine is a little more tailored to the local meta. From someone who has made such a beautiful deck, I'd love some advice. To return it in kind though, I'd recommend side-boarding Blind and main-boarding sign in blood. You'll have the life to spare, and you need draw power. Blind isn't a bad card, but only against straight up aggro decks. Against other control, it's absolutely useless.

Thank in case you do help!

question, why do i see all these decks with cards such as Godless Shrine, whereas you could play a card like Tainted Field without having to tap?

Oh, and I'm a beginner, so please forgive me if this is a stupid question.

Tainted field isn't standard, so for the deck to be standard legal Godless Shrine and Isolated Chapel are the answer. Also, they almost never come into plat tapped, as you just pay the life cost.

The fact that I did it on your deck page is because I chose the ones with most circulation . So be happy that your deck made it this far and shut your mouth

touché, but its still disappointing to think you got a nice compliment and sought me out for advice, just to find out that you said the same exact thing to a bunch of other decks. Which to me means your just spamming and not even looking at the deck, or taking the time to like it. Just copy and paste. We all want positive feed back and fast, so you have to be creative with your titles, or title HELP, and make sure your posting decks at certain times when the most people are online so your deck doesn't get buried. That's what I had to do. Sorry to come off as a dick, its just something a lot of people have done and it annoys me.

Hey you two take that shit somewhere else. Omg you trolled my deck blah blah blah who cares. This site is supposed to help critique and improve peoples game and how they go about playing magic in general. So again take that shit somewhere else or on someone elses deck page I have no room for that nonsense here. Now with that being said if you would like me to give your deck a look over I'd be happy to oblige just respond to the post here. Cheers

Poor mtg player here and i want to know are "Godless Shrine" and "Isolated Chapel" crucial to this deck?
I am interested in buying this fine-looking deck, because i have Orzhov deck and liked the play style, but as i said i earlier, im quite poor.
Liked! :)

they r crucial to the deck bc of what they do. both lands make sure that u have a great chance to get either white or black mana when u need it most. other wise its very very hard to run the deck but it can be done when on a budget.

Okay, thanks for the answer, but i think im gonna replace them with normal orzhov guildgates or something, because almost 50 € for eight cards doesn't sound good for my wallet. :D

I always laught to myself when I see someone make a post on the most popular decks on the site and have made only 1-2 posts before and all happen to be on this players page and also have no decks of there own... its almost as if.. they aren't real people? and just multiple accounts that users make to insure there deck stays alive? like this is a new idea and its interesting and all that, hell, when I first saw it I liked it too. But 170 likes for a deck that does that same thing as an older for 2 less mana? BULLSHIT. Its a good deck, but not that good. stop making accounts dude, this deck is old news.

The deck is very well built and guaranteed to kick ass! I love it!
Too bad I can only like it once..........

I could use some help with a deck of my own.....
I am getting the public to create their very own Super Hostile deck, and I need as many people as possible to help me out.
Please feel free to tell other people and get them in on the deck.

Here is the link, if you want to help.

This deck is extremely cool! My one question: no Pontiff of Blight? REALLY? Pontiff would be great in this deck, giving all creatures extort.

Fascinating. I wonder what pulled this old deck up into the hot page? Props, by the way. I never could get extort to work well when it was standard, and this is an excellent use of it.

I recall when exquisite blood came out. I was one of the first to build a deck around it. It wasn't standard, but it worked pretty well.

Love the deck, absolutely beautiful! :D Have you ever considered Bonds of Faith? as an alternative to your Pacifisms? It's a pretty versatile card for the same CMC, plus it doubles as a buff enchantment for your Guards, High Priests, and Guildmages. Obviously this deck isn't in standard anymore... I wonder if you run this, or a version of this in Modern? +1!
