Deck Description

Wanted to try make Primal Forcemage work, and when Rhonas's Monument came out in Amonkhet, I thought it was possible... Until I reread the Monument. Forcemage gives the creature that enters +3/+3 for the turn, hence all the haste creatures. The Monument triggers on casting a creature, thus it can never give the +2/+2 to the creature you just played.

Then while looking up options for a mono black Panharmonicon deck, just because I thought it'd be cool, I stumbled across Ambuscade Shaman, which works the way I wanted Rhonas's Monument to, plus it has Dash.

Sideboard is other cards I considered. I decided not to use Boggart Ram-Gang; Rakdos Shred-Freak; and Strangleroot Geist because of the multiple colour mana symbols. It was a toss-up between Mournwillow and Dreg Mangler, but I won't be getting Delirium easily, but I could use Dreg Mangler's Scavenge in a pinch. Bomat Courier would help fuel Mournwillow's Delirium, but since there's no red, I don't like losing cards.

Mimic Vat is a strong consideration, but not sure if there's space for it. It can eat up and reproduce an opponent's creature...

How to Play

Turn one and two are for ramping. Sadly, a lot of the good haste creatures in Black and Green cost 3+ mana. Plus, ramping allows for a turn 3 Panharmonicon.

Primal Forcemage and Ambuscade Shaman are the key creatures here. Each creature that enters after them get a temporary Power and Toughness boost. Panharmonicon allows these Power and Toughness boosting triggers to trigger multiple times.

Once at least one Forcemage or Shaman is out, you play the haste creatures.

> Deepcavern Imp: Flying and haste. Combat evasion (Flying) is an important part here as you don't want the boosts to go to waste. Almost never pay the echo as the boosts are temporary.
> Dreg Mangler: 3 mana for a 3/3 with Haste. Can't say no to a solid mana investment. The Scavenge won't be used often.
> Reckless Imp: Almost always Dash this as it'll gain the boost every time. Also, the Dash is cheaper than casting it, so a decent turn two poke at the opponent.
> Uktabi Drake: The cheapest haste creatures in here, and it has flying. Almost never pay the echo.
> Timbermare: The tap effect on this finishes games.

Deck discussion for Ambuscade Forcemage

You know, I never noticed that Ambuscade Shaman did that. I personally recommend tossing Deepcavern Imp with it's echo cost and just running Mournwillow, that chance to stop chump blocks can get you a big win quite often.

I see what you mean. What's your thoughts on Mimic Vat?

Did you just say best budget idea ever? I love Forcemage and if you asked me if I ever considered that idea in Commander I'd slam my fist on the table and say, "THE DREAM WILL NOT DIE DAMMIT!!" Modern? Put it in. Test this. I need to see this deck on this website so I can start buying it. I need to walk in my local Modern tournament and turn heads with this. I need to make people say, "Did he just Mimic Vat a Timbermare?"

I'd love to have my Mimic Vat "eat" the opponent's Kitchen Finks :P

Going to have to do some testing on XMage...

There's a downside to Mimic Vat. Because Affinity is a big deal in Modern, almost everyone has sideboard artifact hate.

Darksteel Citadel? Or just control stuff for it? Stony Silence? Run Smelt/Disenchant. Esper/Jeskai Mimic Vat control could be beastly. You want to spice things up? Run Mana Tithe and see who prepares for that. I've seen people scoop to Mana Tithe.

I actually have a set of the White Force Spike. Good card :P

I guess Mimic Vat control would need to at least run sideboard teck to counteract the artifact hate.

Not only Mulldrifter for the Vat, but also Shriekmaw :D Blue would be useful in fetching the key card. Lots of artifact search in blue. In Standard, we have Trophy Mage that can fetch the Vat, and any other 3 mana artifact. Padeem, Consul of Innovation would be worth considering for the hexproof clause to protect the Vat.

I can't think of a single Evoke card that Mimic Vat wouldn't benefit from. Hell, You could run Faerie Macabre just to get off a turn by turn discard. I say run Evoke Vat control with stuff like Trophy Mage and Padeem to protect it while it runs rampant on your Evoke Vat engine. Throw in some crazy counterspells your opponent won't expect like Mana Tithe and Hinder (that's right, I just went to Kamigawa. ) and you could slam some power cards in sideboard to just shut down stuff like Stony Silence and Blood Moon. This deck already sounds amazing.
