Deck Description

So i took the original Gilder Bairn combo and made it a thing. This is meant to be Modern competetive, so if you have serious advice or questions about things, please comment!

How to Play

#1: Set up the Gilder combo (Traning Grounds, Paradise Mantle, Gilder Bairn) while stalling your opponents.

#2: Get out Plaxcaster or Ring of Evos Isle.

#3: Play Sage of Hours with either Plaxcaster or the Ring already out. Once Sage has a counter on him, use the Gilder combo to pump him up to as high as you need, then activate his ability to effectively take as many turns as necessary to win the game.

Deck discussion for Gilder Bairn C-C-Combo Breaker

I like this one much more. It seems fairly fool-proof, with several win-cons. The only problem I have with this is I don't exactly understand how lighthouse chronologist works

the chronologist is only a placeholder. wizards just teased a new blue heroic creature that lets me take an extra turn for every 5 +1 counters i remove from it. See the link

edit: got rid of your duplicate comment. hate it when it does that to me

I think this combo will be something the moment Journey comes out. You pretty much win when sage hits the fild with Gilder and Training gorunds already in play. You could add llanowar reborn/oran-rief for an instant counter on sage

0

hmmm. i will consider them

0
Posted 09 April 2014 at 21:28

also alby, chronologist basically means that in a 1v1 match, you would take an extra turn after your opponent ends his turn, THEN you would take you actual turn after that.

an even better example is say you are in a 4 man free for all. you would take your turn, then your first opponent would take theirs, then you would go again, then your second opponent would go, then you would go again, then your third opponent would go, then you would go yet again, THEN it would be your actual turn. make sense?

JZ Llanowar Reborn would be the only one i could use. Oran-Rief only works on green creatures and the Sage is blue

Do you think there's any room here for Pili-Pala? That plus Training Ground and Paradise Mantle would provide infinite mana of any color. I'm really loving this concept, btw. If it ends up working in the Modern meta After Nyx is released, I might just have to eat Ramen for a couple of weeks. (Sage Seer is going to be a $40+ card for sure).

Ajani, Mentor of Heroes provides another fun option. Use his ultimate while a Sonbonded Sage of Hours is in play... Take 20 extra turns. Could be infinite turns if you wait till loyalty 9.

0
Posted 11 April 2014 at 13:26

thats 2 extra cards that, while they make a great combo, dont really help this deck. I could just play Ajani and buff him with Gilder Bairn and get the 100 life i need easy. as for Sage, there are a few necessary ways to get him the counters in here already, so once he has one, i can just double it until i can take 100 turns

0
Posted 11 April 2014 at 15:53

Wasn't really suggesting it for this deck; it just got me excited. I think it's the only way to get infinite turns in Standard (like there needs to be more than one).

0
Posted 11 April 2014 at 17:02

lol yeah but thats a hard combo to set up. you have to keep ajani alive for 5 turns, meaning that you need to be ramping as soon as possible. plus you would likely be running either G/W or Bant, so mana fixing would be an issue too. its completely doable, just very difficult

0

I think Ajani would work better in turbo fog, honestly.

agreed he would fit perfectly

0

Add another card to the mix, and it's not TOO tough to set up:

1. Play Sage of Hours
(The rest COULD be done before the opponent's next turn, but would realistically take longer )
3. Play Sunbond on Sage of Hours
4. Play Ajani, and +1 Ajani, giving Sage the counters.
(Opponent gets no more turns after this point)
5. Play Ordeal of Heliod on Sage, and attack. Sac the Ordeal. (Sage now has 15 +1/+1 counters)
6. Take three extra turns, during which you +3 Ajani, giving Sage 9 +1/+1 counters.
7. Take an extra turn, during which you +1 Ajani.
8. Ultimate Ajani. You gain 100 life, Sage gets 100 counters, and you can take infinite extra turns.
9. Laugh maniacally while you can , cause it might never happen again.

1

assuming no mana ramp is done, this would be a turn 6 combo at best. in standard that isnt bad, but thats still a risky move. and to that, i totally agree on step 9, because you would only pull that off once

0

So I was hella wrong about Sage of Hours' value. By a factor of 10. Oh well, that makes it all the more attainable.

i made the combo because they were so similar, but vorel is: #1 legendary and #2 costs 2 colored mana for his ability to go off. he is great, dont get me wrong. my buddy baeldares runs standard simic and it is broken all to hell when it comes to counter production

0

Isn't Kira bad for this deck? She(?) stops gilderbairn from targeting sage, I mean, I guess you just try to equip the sage with something first and then trigger the bairn, it just seems annoying and wasteful... I know I would hate to have all my pieces in place but be unable to put them together because of one of my own things.

0

yes, the ability would be countered the first time i do it, but because i can do it as many times as i so choose, then kira will not really be as much of a hinderance as she seems to be

May want to look into more card draw or ways to pull from your library if you want it to be competitive in modern. Combo decks get less effective for every card needed in its combo. Say you have 5 cards necessary, a play set of each. So you have a one in three chance initially of pulling a needed card. Good odds any day of the week. Ok so now you draw your initial hand (7cards) let's say you get lucky and you pull three of the needed cards. Awesome start..... Ohhh so it seemed. Now you've got a 17% chance of drawing one of the last two needed cards. That's 17 times out of 100. Let's say it's your lucky day though and you pull it quick. Good!!! Nope... No.... Now the % is around 8.4 of getting that final card. Granted from here the odds go nowhere but up, very slowly though. Toloria West or any blue creature with transmute will help you pull your gilder bairn. There's also ways to pull artifacts and enchantments.

0
Posted 23 April 2014 at 08:25

Muddle the Mixture might be better over remand too, same cost but it also has transmute. That way if you have a couple other counter spells you can just discard it and pull gilder bairn, Kira or plaxcaster out. Just a thought...

0

MtM has a cmc of 2. You would need something with cmc 3 to pull out gilder.

0

yeah the only mono blue transmute for 3 is Drift of Phantasms, and i might add it, but im not sure. will need to get this deck finished first. im only halfway to complete on it. as for remand, as good as it is, i swapped it with delay. since my goal is to take as unneccessarily large amount of turns in the first place, making someone wait is just sweet irony. true i will miss out on the card draw, but i am willing to make any adjustments as necessary for this thing to truly work good

The combo is just plain awesome. I admit that I was drooling for about a minute as I pondered the possibilities.

While 5-card combos are mind blowing and elegant, 3-card combos are gnarly when combined in a single deck. Gilder Bairn works so well with training grounds. All those planeswalker ultimates .... Garruk's + a 9/9 kraken. Ridiculous shenanagins with Karn.

This (and proliferate) with Planeswalkers is so damn powerful I expect Wizards will have to remove loyalty counters or make them untargetable!

I don't play "Yu-gi-oh!". However I still have the original starting pack, plus a black luster soldier which is useless, since I don't own the ritual I need to summon it, and the epic soul exchange. Oh well, Trapmaster and Man-Eating Bug are awesome.

0
Posted 30 April 2014 at 17:27

if i could somehow port my yugioh dragon deck over to a magic equivalent, then i would be the happiest person ever. i began playing yugioh back in 98 and i played for a several years. during that time i built what is hands down the best deck ive ever made. to date, it has never lost a match. only one person has ever played it twice, and he regretted it when after a few turns i dropped a Blue Eyes, Horus Lv8, and Armed Dragon Lv10 at the same time, wiped his whole field, and swung for game.

my friends refused to play it, not even in a multiplayer match. it is too damn powerful for its own good. it also had a knack of getting revenge on people who killed one of my dragons. i used to warn people who wanted to play it to not kill any of the dragons or else a bigger one would drop in and kill them in retaliation. without fail, someone would kill one of my dragons, only to have an even nastier dragon swoop in and just wreck their entire game plan. the hilarious part is that the average star level is 7

0
Posted 30 April 2014 at 18:07

the only downside is that i stopped playing shortly after synchro monsters came out, so it is severely outdated. i doubt it would be able to maintain its record unless i give it a major overhaul

How bout I give you my old cards, and you go for it!

And you should look at the yugioh card "soul change". It allows you to sacrifice one of your opponent's creatures in place of your own. I don't even play yugioh and I see how crazy that is.

0

0

It is soul exchange, I use it in an awesome ancient gear deck, but I seriously cut back when I found magic, now my yugioh cards just lie there in my drawer most of the time

0

I actually dont need it. I can special summon all but 2 creatures in the deck. Several all at once in some cases. The deck has at least one of every card that keys off of or is a member of the blues eyes and red eyes dragon lineage, not to mention all the armed dragons and horus lineage, plus some of the most OP (and in some cases banned) dragons ever to grace the game, including but not limited to Chaos Emperor Dragon, Montage Dragon, and Gandora the Dragon of Destruction. If it were a magic deck, it would be R/W/B because while the creatures are nasty, the spells and traps are even nastier. I will post the full decklist after i get off of work today so you all can weigh in on it

Why not run something more than simic charm to trigger sage? Slaughter pact comes to mind as with Kira there's no down fall, with paradise's you can pay if needed against your opponent, and if you happen to be tapped out minus your gilder you can still combo out first turn with sage.

No, jace is banned I was just trying to say ring is too slow as it gives your opponent(s) a full turn to deal with stuff. That's also why I suggested a 0 cost spell that targets. I haven't played the deck but with a curve that low and ramp with the 8 paradises you should be able to cut to 20 land just fine. So cutting 2 rings and 2 land (6 if it were me because I'd cut yavimaya cost for like city of brass or the new one if adding slaughter pact) them add 3 slaughter pact and one more plaxcaster giving you plenty of ways to be sure you can go infinite with saga ASAP.

Why not use Slitherhead as a more resilient way of getting a counter on Sage of Hours? People won't be boarding Graveyard hate against a combo like this, and you have another way of getting a free counter.

Llanowar reborn is the safest way but trades off on speed it looks like, occasional turn 1 no mana dork may be why
