Deck Description

I always been fascinated with Mill spells but its never been a Deck that has seen a lot of play in the local tournaments. This is surprisingly super fast and with the Fetch lands been very popular in Modern format, Archive trap is the most dangerous card in this deck. I had a lot of fun playing against my friends and it is always a good time.

The Possibility of the deck on how it can go is endless but regardless I had a great time watching my opponents struggles are they see all their main key cards been toss away in the graveyard. Top it off by playing Crypt Incursion to gain 6- 30 life depending on what you are playing against.

Drop you comments below, Thanks !

How to Play

Turn 1, Opponent plays a Fetch land, go search for land.
Me- Archive Trap X 2 for 26 Cards.
My Turn
Play Island- Hedron Crabs - Surgical extraction pay with 2 Life - Take out any cards from Graveyard plus Look in opponent hands and library for future Surgical play.

Turn 2, Opponent plays Land - Random Creature or Spell
My Turn
Drop Polluted Delta, Search for Swamp Mill for 6 Cards - play Glimpse for 10 cards or Visions of Beyond, Thought Scour to Draw Cards.
By Turn 2 There should be a total of 10 to 6 cards left in opponents library depending of what might of been played.

SideBoard Notes -

Surgical Extraction and Extirpate and Greats against Combo deck that requires Keys cards in order to win.

Rest In Peace against most Deck that have graveyard ability, shuts them down quicky.

Dishenchant and Ratchet Bombs against Leylines of Sanctuary and anything that would be a threat.

Path Of Exile- Remove any Creatures Plus ability to Trigger Archive Trap for Zero.

Deck discussion for Mill House Modern

Looks like a very well thought out design.
It's the best hybrid between UB and esper mill that I have seen so far.

A few details stick out though:

With aggro having a 51% presence in modern and both combo and control having lots of creatures, what is your general basis for placing path to exile in the sideboard?

Is leyline of sanctity really necessary? It's probably there against combo, but wont surgical and extirpate handle that?

Isn't ratchet bomb too slow and too narrow to have a real good effect?

Based on my own milling experiences against affinity, elves, infect and merfolk, I can recommend that you replace 1 archive trap and replace it with a single mesmeric orb. (My own deck features 1 trap and 1 mesmeric orb) Most pro's don't use their fetchlands once they discover that you play mill.

Thanks for the reply!

I actually added 2 Path to Exile to the deck and removed the trapmaker's snare. I didn't find the need to look for a Archive Trap if its not already in my hand. It does also take out the element of surprise. Removing a big unwanted creature is often better than attempting to Mill the opponent as fast as possible. Once they realize they are up against a Mill deck, they tend to not go Fetch or search their library.

Leyline of Sanctity was very helpful for me. Playing against Burn, Discard and other Mill deck works very well. And yes Surgical and Extirpate handle most Combo deck .... I played against a Tron deck and Exile his Urza's land from the graveyard, he sweep up his cards and called it quit.

At first I wasn't sure if Ratchet Bomb was going to have any good effect but it prove it can be very good against Affinity, Elves and Merfolk. Keeping a Ratchet Bomb with Zero, 1 or 2 Counter on can create a lot of destruction once activated. I did find that it work well for my advantage.

I am thinking of adding 2 Mesmeric Orb into the mix and removing 1 Archive trap and 1 Mind Funeral. I do like the idea of having agro deck Milling themselves but it does also the same for me. I think some more play testing is required for this.

I took a look at your Deck, looks like a lot of fun but I don't find that Chancellor is really needed. Based on my experience playing Modern Mill, the odds of still been alive and having 7 lands available isn't good. Yes sure if has a very powerful ability but by the time you can play it you are usually dead.

Chancellor is a very fun card!
I hate having useless cards in my hand, which is why I run a single archive trap. When I run two I usually get stuck with 1 in hand. So running 3 chancellors is done by me for the sake of having something reliable. I lose steam lategame but get to lock down the opponent early with surgicals. Chancellors work more in your favor than against you as long as you run exactly three of them. If you want to test out this "theory" just use some paperstrips and put inside the sleeves with the chancellors. Whenever you draw then during your opening game or cast them via shelldock isle (or even hardcast them) put a smiley on the strip, and whenever you draw one never put to use mark it with a sad face. First type of smiley to reach 10 will show you if the chancellors work :D

I tend to build designs that win before sideboard, so my solution against decks like burn is to mill them faster than they can burn me. I'm in the middle of trying to beat affinity, elves, infect and merfolk solidly, so I have a bit reliable data on a couple of cards.

Archive trap: I run 1 because I play no path's, but in your case I would try out using 3.
mesmeric orb: Against my 4 major testdecks 1 seems to be the best number, so try out 1.
augur of bolas: the majority using it uses 3. Use it only at major tournaments (100+ players), use snappy at local meta.
mind funeral: esper builds uses 2-3 of these.
hedron crab: I only use 2, since most of the time it is evaded, trampled or shot. Try out 3.

Following these advices you will end up with 2 empty slots.
Test 2 maindeck spellskite with those spaces.

By the way, how far have you gotten with your mill in tournaments?

I did very well for myself I must say. Won 3 out of 5 Match.

First round VS Green Urza Tron deck was a lot of fun and I won 2 match in row.

Second Round VS Mono Black Discard - Terrible match up. Lost 2-1

Third Round VS Splintter Twin - Won 2-1 - I won the first match before he ever made it to turn 3.

Fourth Round VS Red Deck Win - Goblin Guide, Eidolon and Swiftspear are just too fast for this deck .Lost both match.

Fifth Round VS Affinity - Won 2-1. It would of been 2-0 if I didn't screw up the first match by keeping a Fetch and 2
Archive trap in opening hand.... that was more useless than Tits on a Bull.

Note - I had actually wrote in detail each match , forgot to Click on Post Reply and lost it when I refreshed the page . Didn't feel like typing it all again.

Well, I'm trying to gather a group of profesional millers from all types of modern mill, so if you've ever won/win top 8 with mill you will qualify for the group. Let me know when you get there and I'll give you a link.
