Deck Description

I fell in love with Volrath, the Shapestealer RIGHT when they spoiled him. He has so many synergy possibilities and room for outplay and just all around shenanigans. I'm totally open to feedback, but I have been in the tank on this deck for months and am really close to pulling the trigger on this one.

I tried to build this deck for my kitchen table group. We are decently competitive, but I'm not shooting for Tier 1 or anything. I want a strong focused deck, with room for lots of interaction. The basic concept is to just have a call with Volrath's copy trait and have a decent number of realistic alternate win-conditions for situations where Volrath has been "command-zoned" too many times and is difficult to get back on the board.

You'll notice the extensive side/maybeboard, this is a collection of all the cards I was toying around with having in the deck or cards I cut through the building process. ***Special Mention to Experiment Kraj, that card looks awesome for this deck but it's hard to find a slot for it.***

How to Play

The deck has sufficient staples (Card Draw/Advantage, Mana Ramp, Removal, etc.). So hopefully you won't be grasping for resources when you need them. Additionally there should be fine support for putting counters where you need them. You own board is easy enough, but we have things like Tetzimoc,Yawgmoth,Unspeakable Symbol, and Volrath for placing counters on opponent's creatures.

I will break down some of the interactions I'm most excited about:

Volrath+Nacatl War-Pride(NWP). Having Volrath copy NWP creates a lot of strong NWPs or if you use his copy trait while the NWP trigger is on the stack you can make lots of whatever else you want. (Think Biovisionairy, Hydra Omnivore, or any strong ETB creatures)

With roughly 10 other cards beside Volrath himself that copy a creatures on the board, you can get into some really interesting interactions. Let's take Altered Ego for example. My opponent has some *non-legend* creature I want (maybe Thrummingbird or a Primordial) I use Volrath's trait to become a 7/5 copy of it and that drops Volrath's Legendary Super-type until the ability wears off. Then I play Altered Ego copying "Volrath" now that creature I've made is a 7/5 copy of whatever It was, it has Volraths copy trait, and it STAYS! Now i basically have two Volraths.

One of my dream wins is to sweep the table having a pumped up Volrath with some evasion (Flying/Unblockable/etc.) get ready to connect, then copy Hydra Omnivore and target him with Tainted Strike. Lethal infect everyone at once.

Another, would be to have at least 12 open Mana on an opponents end step before untapping. With Simic Ascendancy and Heroes' Bane on the battlefield. Trigger Heroes' bane's activated ability three times (on almost any creature) and that should put enough counters on the ascendancy to win on upkeep.

There's a sneaky one with Devoted Druid(DD), Quillspike, and Obelisk Spider. DD can untap and give itself -1/-1 counters, Quillspike uses the mana DD generates to remove her counters and pump. That is an infinite engine, and Obelisk Spider will ping every opponent for each rotation.
