Deck Description

November 29, 2012- Standard
--------

A different take of the GW decks in the Meta.

Many people play GW Aggro or Midrange at my LGS. I really like the deck, don't get me wrong- but it seems that I always play against the same deck. I wanted to take a different approach to the decks idea, and I really would like help.

The basic idea is that you gain life- lots of it. Once you get over thirty, if you have Chalice of Life on the field, you tap it and transform it into Chalice of Death: An artifact that taps to do 5 damage to an opponent. To me, that's just so cool, however it can be difficult to pull off.

This isn't an aggro deck that can pull of early game kills. This is more of a hold your ground and thwart your opponents efforts to reduce your live. If you like this deck, please help me out. I am planing to take this to FNM and I want to do the best I can with it. Any and all suggestions/constructive criticism will be gladly appreciated.

Edit # 1: Took out the mana dorks, and put in Farseek and Elixir of Immortality. Added Sigarda, Fog- reduced Heroes' Reunion down to 1.

Edit# 2: Made some changes the PoetMaster suggested. I can honestly say that the deck is making good progress! Keep up the work!

Edit# 3: Went to FNM last night with this deck and how it appears on MTGvault.

Round 1- Opponent had to drop because her son lost his deck :c She dropped 2-0

Round 2- Red Deck Wins 2-1

Round 3- American Midrange 2-1

Round 4- Azorious Control 0-2

Round 5- Azorious Door to Nothingness 1-2

Overall: Came in 9th place out of 21 people. Not bad for it's first official run!

The fastest this deck has moved was in Game 3 against American Midrange. Turn 1: Land, Cathedral Sanctifier Turn 2, Heroes' Reunion. Turn 3/4 Chalice of Life. Proceed to smack for 10 for the next two turns! So much fun!

Deck discussion for Chalice of Life and Death

Fiend Hunter, Elixir of Immortality, Druid's Deliverance, and Fog can all prolong the game. I think you may have too much focus on life gain, and not enough on building a win con other than Chalice. Another Gavony Township would help that.

One last wrinkle you could consider would be the Acidic Slime/Cloud Shift engine to wipe lands while you control with life gain and fog effects.

I have looked at this concept but haven't had the courage to try it. Not a lot of artifact hate out there, but your Chalice will draw a lot of O-rings and Detention Spheres. Good luck!

Elixir and Fog are both options that I have considered. If I decided on Fiend Hunter, I'm not quite sure what I would replace from main to place him in.

I like the Acidic Slime/Cloud Shift, but again that seems more like a side board thing. I'm not too sure..

I love the concept of this deck. When Chalice comes out and WORKS, it's so much fun. You are 100% about the O-rings thought, it does bring a lot of attention to itself. Hehe.

Thanks for your opinion!

Chalice is fun, there's no doubt! Two of my favorite decks run it, which you're welcome to check out. Here are my comments on your deck.

- Heroes' Reunion: Admittedly, I've never run this particular card, but I'm not usually a fan of cards that ONLY gain life and nothing else. I much prefer dual purpose cards, like Centaur Healer (life and creature), or Elixir of Immortality (life and card recycling). I recommend 3-4 Cathedral Sanctifiers in place of your Heroes.
- Mana Dorks: You don't really need 'em. Especially if you decide to put in Elixirs and Sanctifiers, as they will often fit your 1-drop slot. Around turn 4, they start becoming dead draws. If you really want the mana ramp, go with Farseek instead, as it doubles as a way to thin the deck.
- Goldnight Redeemer definitely fits the theme, but by the time you're able to play her, there are better options. Splash black for Vault. Add a couple Seraph Sanctuaries and Entreat the Angels. Maybe an Armada Wurm or two.
- Selesnya Charm gives you some versatility in the form of surprise removal in the early game with a 2/2 token, removal of mid/late game creatures, and defense for burn.
- Grove Guardian is a great compliment to Trostani, but don't include it unless you keep your mana dorks or include Farseek for mana fixing purposes.

I think your deck should work ok, but feel free to check out these two examples of fun (and effective) Chalice decks for more ideas:

I agree with you with Hero's Reunion. I originally placed it in the deck because I thought it was a pretty viable card. 7 life for two mana- I was okay with that. I'll try replacing them with the Cathedral Sanctifiers and see' how that works out.

Once I played a few games with this deck, I realized how much it sucks to draw a mana dork in mid-lategame. I like them in because they can jump start the early game, but that's their only use. I thought about replacing the Gatecreeper's for Farseeks, I might end up doing that. Also I see how useful Elixir could be, so I will more than likely replace some mana dorks for them.

Goldnight Redeemer does cost a lot, but she can be helpful. I thought about Angel of Jubilation, but I kinda shrugged that off to the side. In the end, she serves as a flier that can help out from being flown over. Then again, Sigarda would probably be better. I don't think Entreat fits this deck too well. I did think about Terminus to stabilize the board in case my opponent builds his board too quickly, but I still don't know where I'd place that.

I would probably place the Selesnya Charm in the sideboard. I wouldn't mind playing it in main, but where?

Thought about Grove, but I kept Gavony instead. Still deciding whether the was a good idea our not.

This deck can work on it's own, but I am trying to make it better. I want to be able to take this to a competitive environment and at least stand a chance, while throwing all the other GW players off. Haha.

Thanks for your opinion!

Hmm, why is restoration angel here? Just to blink thrag? if it is.. I would recommend droping him and adding cloudshift instead
Since your are using life gain, u should add ajani's pridemate and maybe Healer of the pride...
And Idk if they are still standard but, Goldenglow moth and pride guardian are nice too ;D

I made a blinking deck if you wanna see: http://www.mtgvault.com/ViewDeck.aspx?DeckID=406838

Restoration Angel is in here because of her flicking abilities, and because she is a good flier. I am considering Cloudshift, but I am still trying to figure out what I'd want to drop for that, and or if I want to side board it.

Ajani's Pridemate, Goldenglow Moth, and Pride Guardian are not standard unfortunately :/ Healer of the Pride is a nice card, but it's mana cost is too much for it's ability.

Also, I realized that I never stated that this is supposed to be a standard deck. Will' add that to the description :)

Thanks for your opinions!

If you don't mind splashing for a 3rd color, heartless summoning would work really well for your deck. running 3 heartless and 4 farseek would set you up for the mana ramp you need without mana dorks. I would also think about using serra avatar as another win con. Also, if you do go with using black, that would open up to some more creatures for your deck like nighthawk. This looks really fun, I want to try my own version now.

If you can comment on my B/W/R flicker deck, I would appreciate it. http://www.mtgvault.com/ViewDeck.aspx?DeckID=408502

It's not that I wouldn't mind splashing a third color, I just think that it would make this deck slower, however I am open to options.

I was thinking about putting Serra Avatar in, but that seven mana cost is making me not wanting to do so.

Thanks for your opinions!

This is actually the 1st competative deck I've yet seen of this type... :)

...though, it's slow & you play very few ramp in it...

...you don't need Trostani, since the only token you can have is Thrag's 3/3 beast... ...the life gain thing is nice with her, but not worth, since even Thrag's toughness is only 3... ...Trostani is only worth, when you play Armada Wurm...

I'd drop Trostani & put Sigarda(2 copies) in the sideboard & put in 1 more Reunion, 1 more Elixir & 1 more land(Gavony Township)... ...I'd put Fog(3 copies) in the sideboard & put 2 Selesnya Keyrune in the main deck...

Possible sideboard: 2x Sigarda, 3x Fog, 3x Rest in Peace, 3x Pithing Niedle, 3x Selesnya Charm, 1x Elixir of Immortality.......

I can honestly say that you're the one who got me to love Keyrunes. I worked everything you said (Haven't made changes in MTGvault yet). But I cannot find a place for the Runes. What would you swap for them?

I run a chalice of life/death deck in rl and i use Norn's Annex to help slow down enemy attacks and also use Angel's Feather and Conjurer's closet to help ramp up the gaining life speed. Also Suture Priest helps deal damage early game. Just for fun i use Celestial Mantle and Whispersilk Cloak and with Rhox Faithmender's ability i would get crazy amount of life.

I thought about putting Conjurer's Closet in this deck for it's continuous blinking abilities, however I hate that it costs 5 mana to use :/ I am still thinking about putting Cloud Shift in this deck, but I dunno what to replace it with.
