Deck Description

I was watching Nikachu's Coffee and mtg the other week or something and I took it personally when he looked at a terrible common merfolk card, called it something like "probably one of the better options for pauper merfolk" or something like that then moved on and said merfolk was unplayable in pauper. (i love his channel though btw)

Anyway....he might be right? But challenge accepted

It's true Merfolk really doesnt have many payoffs in pauper right now (the only one I'm really running here is shaper apprentice) but it does have plenty of unblockable 1 drops- so the obvious answer was make em ninjas.

The idea here is play unblockable one drops and ninjutsu into them as early as turn 2. Then use the ETB looters (Traders and merchants) to throw aether bursts and smoke shrouds into ur graveyard for bigger swings later in the game.

Maybe this works- maybe it doesnt. I definitely spent way too much time trying to make this work though. I went through a bunch of different versions of this build in different colors and different themes and this is the version I ended up on as its seemed to maybe be the fastest and most consistent. it's basically just worse dimmer faeries at this point but more aggro-y idk haha

How to Play

Go fast.

Main deck is trying to out tempo the opponent more- but if the aether bursts end up being a little too cute theres more hard removal in the sideboard.

Skullsnatcher if up against reanimator builds, spreading seas for tron (look! actual merfolk cards kinda), and a "protection" package if needed with spell pierces and unlikely aid against control.

(also dont forget! Changeling outcast is both an unblockable one drop merfolk AND ninja and will turn on your shaper apprentices AND trigger smoke shroud if need be)

Deck discussion for PAUPER: dimir MerNinjas (?)

+1
Each and every well built deck is playable, the question is...what do you want to compete against? Competitive top pauper decks? Casual kitchen table builds? It's always the question of what you're playing against.
The main problem with pauper tribals is that you don't really benefit from playing only (or nearly only) creatures from one tribe. One of the main reasons in my opinion is that there are no lords (Safe slivers) and strengthening are applied global to all creatures you control. There are some cards that benefit of having another tribal creature of the same type on the board (Jade Bearer for merfolk, [[Cenn's Heir]] for kithkin, and so on) but in general they are to weak compared to other creatures of the same tribe. Also sometimes there are simply not enough good tribal creatures of one colour, so you have to add a second, or worse a third colour...which makes the manabase complicated and forces you to add mana-fixing cards that could be used by other slots.
Personally I'm a huge fan of Raise the Draugr which I would probably play over Corpse Churn.
Mistblade Shinobi could also be an option as it forces your opponent to cast a card over and over again.

thanks for the commenting! Corpse churn actually isnt for creature recursion as much as its for digging and throwing aether bursts and smoke shrouds into the yard, though it does have that secondary benefit if I need it! Should have probably mentioned that! Though if i was playing in a more top meta-representative field thatd probably be the better card since this would probably get hosed by burn though i think the mutagenic growths and smoke shrouds give me some game still. I had considered green and other colors, but wanted to go for the faster build. I think the simic version would be a little slower and the 3 color sultai one would probably just be too inconsistent was my thoughts so i had ended up with this. I went through a few versions before landing on this one.

And i considered mistblade but since I didnt want to run too many ninjas (as they're essentially the curve toppers in this build), I had priotized the beefier/more card advantagy ones over it since i also have aether bursts for the tempo side of the deck. the goal was to be as competitive as i think I could get it, but my lean was for what i know my local scene is like so side board and the like was for that in mind mostly. thanks again for commenting!
