Deck Description

Eidolon of the Great Revel is an amazing card.
There, I just stated the obvious.

Or is it obvious?

A new player, they may say this about Eidolon of the Great Revel:
"Why would I want to play a card that is going to deal 2 damage to me almost every time I play a card?"

Here is a deck for you new players of Magic the Gathering.
I designed it in a way that you do not have to fear Eidolon of the Great Revel dealing massive amounts of damage to yourself.
You are welcome.

***Main idea is to try and use Eidolon of the Great Revel, as a Win Con, while doing as little damage to myself***

How to Play

Basically, you are going to want and "cheat" cards in by using their alternative casting cost.

Cards I have found that bypass Eidolon of the Great Revel:
Cards that have high casting cost, but can be played by other means besides paying mana:

1. Fireblast. Just sack the two mountains.
2. Pyrokinesis. Remove a red card.
3. Arc Blade. Pay the Suspend price.
4. Cave In. Pay the red card.
5. Thunderous Wrath. Pay the miracle cost.

That deck lead me to exactly the opposite of what I want.

Your deck is very nice.

Deadly
To the Point

This deck is a little different.
It is for noobs.
People who are too slow/new/inexperienced to realize running a red deck with Eidolon of the Great Revel with a lot of one mana cards is a great idea.

This deck was made to try and show people you can use Eidolon and not take a lot of damage from him yourself.

Check this one out:

Same concept, use Eidolon as defense, not offense.

But I do think you are right...I need a first turn creature drop like Goblin Guide or Monastery Swiftspear.

* Man-lands also circumvent Eidolon, so Mishras and maybe Ghitu Encampment.

* You run cards that deal damage if players cast small spells and you run Howling Mine => Black Vise!

* For multiplayer: Avatar of Fury

* Once more, Blasphemous Act!

* I am not 100% sure but I think morph can circumvent Pillar/Eidolon, too. The rulings say:
"9/20/2014: The face-down spell has no mana cost and has a converted mana cost of 0. When you cast a face-down spell, put it on the stack face down so no other player knows what it is, and pay {3}. This is an alternative cost."
The last sentence is important and lets me think that, while on the stack, the CMC of the spell is as written on the card (and then when it is in play it is 0). IF this is true, there are some options:
- Jeering Instigator
- Skirk Marauder
- Other colours:

* Consider adding a second color, probably white or green.
- White would allow you to prevent the damage for yourself. Sphere of Law would completely nullify all damage from Eidolon/Pillar for you. However, this would give the deck a different direction because now you could run more cheap cards.
- Green would offer Durkwood Baloth, Paragon of the Wild, Rattleclaw Mystic, Bounty of the Hunt, Treetop Village, Khalni Garden

Sure but I think that only applies to when the card is in play, not when it is cast. So, Ancient Ooze wouldn't get any bigger with morphers in play. But for Eidolon/Pillar I *think* using morph as alternate casting cost leaves it at original cmc when you cast it and changing to cmc 0 once it hits play. Much like a a Rock Hydra where you pay 4 for X would have a cmc of 6 when you play it and a cmc of just 2 when it is in play or on the top of your library etc.

You just described this deck.

I maybe want this deck here to be too specific, I will look at your suggestions and go from there.

fated conflagration is a must in here. it is an absolutely devastating burn card, and it lets you set up your next 2 turns (hopefully), which is super important in a burn deck.

you are right in your description, your curve needs some serious work. i would suggest going RU so you could use 4 ponders and 4ish preordains. i dont really know why the rest of the magic community isnt as in love with those card as i am, but its hard to find a better turn 1 in mtg than throwing out a ponder. i know they will burn you late game, but its worth it to speed up the deck and your own development.

diminishing returns is an excellent consideration for blue in here, as it wont hurt you and will reset your hand (which is always in trouble in burn decks), but the best news, it gives your opponent more ammo to hang himself while giving you the burn power you need to finish him off. the hand reset is of extra importance if you run pyrokenesis and fireblast cause they murder your card advantage and development, both of which always hurt with burn.

anyway, thats how i would handle the burn version of this deck. another way to do it would be to go RW and use baneslayer and assemble the legion and do a longer version of the build

I hate Ponders/Brainstorms because they are restricted/banned even though I NEVER play them with the cards that make them banned. Trying to keep it mono red, but will look into your suggestions when I get a little bit of time.
