Deck Description

Goblin Belcher in Modern. impossible? Absolutely not. Top tier deck? Nah. Super fun to play? ABSOLUTELY!

Card choices:
Chancellor of the Tangle - This big fella is mostly free mana in our opening hand. He allows us to keep no landers that can easily go on to feed itself through the many land search abilities we have. Plus, a 6/7 is nothing o scoff at as he can easily block creatures all day long.

Hornet Queen - My choice of finisher. She equates to 5 bodies for a total of 6 power in the air. The Queen and her babies have deathtouch and flying so they can be great ways to stall your opponent from attacking or just swing over and kill your opponent.

Sakura-Tribe Elder/Wall Of Roots - One fetches lands out of our deck which is key, while the other can block and produce extra mana for us to continue our goal.

Ancient Stirrings - Dpes two things, digs for lands, but ideally digs for Goblin Belcher.

Recross the Paths - Digs for a land, but once no lands are left in our library we can cast it, reveal our library then reorder our library with Goblin Belcher on top to ensure we draw it on the next turn to kill our opponent.

Nissa's Pilgrimage - we almost always have Spell Mastery so this bad lady almost always fetches up 3 Forests and one of those goes straight into play tapped.

Caravan Vigil/Lay of the Land - These little ones help us dig lands out and allow us to keep one land hands or even no land hands that have Chancellor of the Tangle in them.

Rampant Growth/Search for Tomorrow - These also filter out lands for us, but SforT fetches a land that comes into play untapped and we can suspend it on turn one.

Haze of Pollen - This can either fog our opponent, giving us another turn or be cycled away to draw a card.

Seal of Primordium - Can kill an Artifact or Enchantment. Ex. Stony Silence

Utopia Sprawl - This little card ramps us faster and allows us to get our fatties into play or even Belch before all of our lands are out.

Goblin Belcher - Our main win condition. Get the lands out and do anywhere from 30-40 damage to our ppponents face.

How to Play

The idea is to ramp all 7 Forests out of your deck and cast and activate Goblin Belcher in the same turn to kill your opponent.

We also have some creatures who can win the game on there own. Hornet Queen is just great. At first she was a budget choice but I learned real quick that she can shut down an opponent. Chancellor carries his /her weight as well.

The sideboard is built for my Meta. Against midrange/Aggro/burn I typically bring in all the Obstinate Baloths and Thragtusks. It is hard for our opponent to handle all the life gain and big bodies that follow that.

Creeping Corrosion blows Affinity out of the water. They dump their hand and we wipe it all away. They hold back and we Belch their face.

Autumn's Veil basically lets us land of Belcher without fear of it being countered. This usually means we win.

Seal of Primordium is just great. It kills things like Stony Silence or can he’ll against Affinity. I find it useful against 8-Rack decks especially. A guy in my meta always play 8-Rack, so I started using these back boys. The match up is much better.

How old is the decktype ???

Belcher has been around for a long while in older formats. This version is one for modern. Works surprisingly well and can easily steal wins.

Don't know abut any earlier ones, but about a month ago Wedge (the Mana Source on YouTube) brought a deck very similar to this one to everyone's attention. It came to my attention when I saw videos of Corbin Hosler (TCGplayer) playing it on TCGplayer's YouTube channel

We have a guy at my local store that has been playing this deck for several years. I watched several of his games and started piecing it together. Then I saw the mentioned TCGplaye article about it and was able to fill the rest of the list out. It’s a really fun deck and I definitely recommend it to anyone looking to just have fun. The best part is turning it into a big boy beat down deck and trying to kill my opponents with big creatures.

Being a mill player I can't help looking at those 7 lands and think, "Damn they'll be gone soon".
If you started, you'd open by searching for lands at your turn 1, running into archive trap there.
The opponent will then play surgical extraction at their turn and rid you of charbelcher.

I've been playing a lot of games against valakut where the key was to mill them with archive traps and glimpse the unthinkable and closing the game with surgical.

Currently mill is a fringe-deck, but it has gained the attention of more and more this year, while wotc has had a history of always adding 2-3 millcards to the game. (they done this since the lorwyn cycle) So logically mill is an increasing threat future to you.

If that ever happens, your best bet is to sleeve up 3 leyline of sanctity for the sideboard ;D

"Currently mill is a fringe-deck" and the main reason decks like this can exist. Always going to have bad match ups, it's the nature of the game. Leyline is a good hedge against Mill and discard (like 8 Rack, etc), so while some of those are fringe scenarios, how many Leylines in the sideboard will depend the player's local meta.

Mill is played by 1% of the meta at the moment which is a huge deal.
Hexproof has been a 1% deck for years, and is now at much more.

I worked out 6 generations of my own mill before I discovered a way to make the paperstrips better,
now I'm playing against the last 2 testdecks to create a "new" generation 1, which has extreme win% compared to my generation 6. (I think it's around 20% better on an average) The worst winrate so far is 30%

I will singlehandedly make mill mainstream...

Nature's Claim might be better than Seal of Primordium. You don't exactly have a benefit for Seal of Primordium being an enchantment and Nature's Claim counts towards Spell Mastery for Nissa's Pilgrimage. And the 4 life is meaningless when you're Belching for 35+ damage.

Also, you probably know this, but didn't mention it: Obstinate Baloth is awesome against 8 Rack :p

Maybe seal is an adaption against chalice 1. The deck has 16 1cc's after all :D
