Another good way to counter spells that targets you or a creature you control is with Siren Stormtamer or more open and easier to escape with Cursecatcher.To turn enemies land into island: Aquitect's Will (Cheaper and can't be removed unless the land itself is removed) or Tideshaper Mystic

Siren Stormtamer doesn't has synergy with the lords so she becomes a dead card quickly. Cursecatcher is a better option for the tribal aspect and free counter vs paying U for the Siren.Aquitect's Will is an option but Spreading Seas can render opponents lands harmless, not just transforming them into islands but they also loose all other abilities and types. This is usefull when you for example face against Tron or Scapeshift decks while Will may cause an advantage to your opponent for giving him/her an extra island
If you want to use a good one drop you should think about using Cosi's Trickster. In the modern format there are a lot of shuffle affects in just about every deck and before you know it your little 1/1 just became a 2/2/ or much more all on its own. You would be surprised how many time opponent over look this card.
