Deck Description

Ah, land destruction, one of the most hated strategies in Magic. Not just because it's mean, but because it sucks to lose to, mostly because it seems like a no-brainer to put together.

Doesn't mean it can't be good....

How to Play

Red is by far the most prevalent land destruction color; it has the unique distinction of always having at least one land killing card in the Standard format as far back as Standard goes, and often more than one. (In the current Standard, it has four!) Kind of makes sense considering the explosions and lava and fire and such that red is known for.

So what better place to start a short series on land destruction than with its favored color?

24 sorceries (with 9 more in the sideboard) all feature the phrase "destroy target land". No muss, no fuss. Basic, nonbasic, no matter how special, it's gone. Of course, they have added benefits like making creatures unblockable (Tectonic Rift), adding mana back to your pool (Seismic Spike), or in most every other case, doing direct damage to the opponent (every other one except cheapie classic Stone Rain).

That direct damage could be a wincon in and of itself, especially with Roiling Terrain racking up the pain. But you'll probably need something else to put you over the top. Good old Lightning Bolt is primarily for controlling whatever creatures they can eek out, but can be thrown at the opponent's face to finish them off. Akki Raider can do some serious work, especially late game, with all the land destruction going on. Seven other beefy creatures all help out with land hate and make for fine beatsticks to close things out. And don't forget the benefits of a Tectonic Rift sprung at the right time!

The sideboard has special land hate against Islands, Plains, and Mountains, hate against non-basic lands (Magus of the Moon, Burning Earth, and Sowing Salt if facing a lot of the same one). Ember Swallower can be a bit suicidal, but is a pretty good finisher if you need one and/or if the opponent is REALLY proficient at restocking their lands.
