Deck Description

This is an EDH deck based around sacing Shadowborn Apostle.

How to Play

You use Shirei, Shizo's Caretaker combo with Shadowborn Apostle so you can sac every turn your 1 cost creatures or even just swing with em.

Main Cards:

A) Sac Engines:
1) Bloodthrone Vampire
2) Gnawing Zombie
3) Hell's Caretaker //also used to return killed demons
4) Sadistic Hypnotist //makes massive card advantage really fast when combo with Shirei, Shizo's Caretaker and Shadowborn Apostle
5) Skullclamp //may not look like it at first but since most creatures with have 1 toughness you can pretty well sacrifice the to draw 2 cards.
6) Cabal Archon //only on clerics
7) Altar's Reap//one time use but draw cards also

B) Token Engines: //Extra food for sac Engines
1) Ogre Slumlord //works with skullclamp
2) Pawn of Ulamog //works with skullclamp
3) Rotlung Reanimator
4) Xathrid Necromancer

C) Reanimation
1) Balthor the Defiled
2) Hell's Caretaker
3) No Rest for the Wicked
4) Empty the Catacombs
5) Patriarch's Bidding

D) Draw Power: This is much needed to you can get the 6 apostles you need
1) Skullclamp
2) Bloodgift Demon
3) Harvester of Souls
4) Seizan, Perverter of Truth
5) Phyrexian Arena
6) Ambition's Cost
7) Ancient Craving
8) Altar's Reap
9) Promise of Power
10) Sign in Blood

So you use your great power of sac engines to use Blood Artist, Falkenrath Noble, and Skirsdag High Priest for power before you have 6 Shadowborn Apostle. Then once you have 6 you start going demon hunting hitting your friends like big nasty flying demons. Then use your other mass reanimate cards just in case.

Some fun alternative win considerations:

Pontiff of Blight: in case you just can't get your sac engines, but hell you got a lot of tokens and cards to play lets extort like a boss.
Pestilence Demon: for the last points of damage needed to win the game or another way to clear the field.

you realize his hundredth card is his commander in the sideboard... Also, the rules on a card always overrule the rules in the book. yes you can.

Unless the budget is very important I'd suggest more non basic lands. Even if it is, barren moor, crypt of agadeem and bojuka bog would be good

It is a little bit, but yeah those are nice lands thanks for the help. I don't know much about lands sadly... Any other good ones that isn't for cheap but I could get later ?

You can't use wild slagheap in a mono black deck. Well, there are tons, reliquary tower, shizo death's storehouse, phyrexian tower, spawning pool, Mikokoro center of the sea

2

Well shizo death's storehouse my commander only hits for 2 so I don't see the point in spending the extra money.
Now phyrexian tower is wow nice I will have to add that some time extra sac outlet while also making more mana nice. Spawning poll its regenerate f that and Mikokoro center of the sea hmm maybe but i think i may have enough draw but maybe.

I'd say get cards like Urborg, tomb of Yawgmoth, Vesuva, Ancient Tomb, Temple of the False god, Lake of the dead, Cabal Coffers, Phyrexian Tower, Thespian's Stage, Volrath's Stronghold and Springjack Pasture for lands but that makes the deck ridiculously expensive.

0

Urborg, tomb of Yawgmoth I don't have a reason to make all all lands swamps. Vesuva can be good but need some more good lands for that, Ancient Tomb is bad because I barley use colorless mana I mainly use swamp mana. Temple of the False god same as b4. Lake of the dead would work well but not my thing. Cabal Coffers *** great card and needs to be added. Phyrexian Tower *** anotehr great card that should be added anoteh way to sac nice. Thespian's Stage same as other copy land. *** Volrath's Stronghold another must have land. Springjack Pasture i just dont think would work. So...

Volrath's Stronghold
Phyrexian Tower
Cabal Coffers

should be added.

But it isn't worth $50 to me. I have almost all the cards up here, but 2 of the demons the lands and shadow born apostle so looking at about $25 order I don't wanna make it more expensive atm maybe ill get lucky and get those lands in trade some day...

0
Posted 18 August 2013 at 20:11

Yeah, one of the best parts about Urborg and Cabal Coffers, everything's a swamp therefore Coffers makes X amount of mana.

0
Posted 19 August 2013 at 00:36

Oh I see yeah that make since as long as you have a lot of special lands. Didn't think of that.....

0

You have a lot of colorless costs in your deck though, so while you aren't running Ancient Tomb, Temple of the False God is a nice additive. Since this deck does not have anything banned by the French list, you could add Griselbrand to the list, then its a great deck for 1v1

Altar's Reap could be a good replacement for a draw spell, it fits well with the sacrifice theme.

Edit: You should play Attrition as well, and Lightning Greaves or Swiftfoot Boots to protect your general.

0

Altar's Reap yeah may be a nice replacement for some of the cost ones. Yeah I been thinking about adding Lightning Greaves and Swiftfoot Boots not just for general but for some of the other guys 2. I'll look into it after I play test it a bit, but I like doing more little things since it is for edh n that is for fun not winning.

You don't have to listen to me, EDH is casual but I believe the EDH 1 of each card rule overrules the apostles ability, I'm sorry.

0

Actually if a card states that you can have more than 1 copy of it in a deck it does overrule the EDH ability. There's an EDH deck with X amount of lands and a crapload of Relentless Rats because you can have X copies of Rats.

0

Why not? Does the card say this can't be used in EDH?? It says a deck can have any number.

0
Posted 19 August 2013 at 04:18

It indeed works in EDH, there was a whole debate about this with Relentless Rats, and the victor was card rule overrules any offical rule (card limit, land per turn etc) now with EDH some groups do house rules and they may ask that Shadowborne and Relentless rats be limited to one per deck

I went with solo black and this general so I can pull out a demon everything but also use sac abilities of other cards taht would be a nice deck but not the one im playing.

I've played against one of these new Shadowborn Apostle/Shirei EDH designs, and I'll be honest, I was very skeptical about how effective a deck like this could be. Turns out, they're pretty legitimate decks...they get out demons quick, and with the right support, can be a real hassle.

The ban list are things that just make EDH either too unbalanced or ridiculous combos. Being able to pay 7 life and draw 7 cards is something of a large advantage considering the current available card pool. And something like worldfire for EDH is just ridiculous.

I always thought that Ob Nixilix, the Fallen was a great EDH card. He gets very large, very fast. And Im not sure how this deck works, but do you think Xathrid Demon might be a nice addition? I know, you have to sacrifice your other large demons, but it may just be worth it. Again, it may not work with this deck. Just a thought.

This deck is not EDH legal. Straight from wizard's web site in the gatherer, under rulings, it states "Shadowborn Apostle’s first ability lets you ignore only the “four-of” rule. It doesn’t let you ignore format legality." ---Meaning it doesn't let you ignore the EDH format rule of 1 only.... But EDH is casual so...knock yourself out I guess.

0
Posted 22 August 2013 at 07:10

I think is referring to later on when the card is in modern not standard any more people prob try to argue that the rule over rules the format rule where you can always have these cards in standard. I don't think its about the number of cards rule because card rules over rule any game rules it in the rule book.

0

How would that rule effect modern differently than standard?

0
Posted 22 August 2013 at 18:07

lotus, youre wrong. the "four-of" rule in constructed is the same as the "one- of" rule in EDH. the Format legality refers not to the number of cards you can have, but rather IF it becomes banned in a format (in which case, the "any number of" would try to overrule the ban, and would not be able to because of this ruling) this card's ability in question is EXACTLY the same as Relentless Rats, which, as stated, is legal in EDH in any number.

I had offered advice earlier in the comments, I said that this deck didn't have enough demons, imo to run Shadowborns without a large stock of demons just to have a bunch of sac outlets or triggers when something dies, but to theme it it out with demons and still keep the sac outlet theme, makes it more fun to build

0
Posted 02 October 2013 at 14:39

Yeah I fell like 8 is enough demons to sac into I fell like it isn't to much or to little I fell like its better at this number even tho at higher number it be way more fun.
