Deck Description

The Tempered Steel deck I played at States this weekend. Final score: 4-4-0, 81st place out of 180 people. So, middle of the pack, which is a hell of a lot better than I expected for my first States.

I was NOT prepared for anything red could dish out and, consequently, two ripped me apart. My other losses were Bant Pod (which I wasn't able to sideboard properly against because Pod didn't come out game 1) and a typical Solar Flare. Both of the latter decks won through Elesh Norn's wonderful way of turning my field to ashes. >.<

Built 99% by joelfg, adjusted by both of us during play testing. Will be receiving HUGE adjustments soon so that I'm ready for the new standard.

Changes to make: Hex Parasite moved to SB, +1 Vault Skirge and Memnite, possible addition of Spellskite main deck. Steel Hellkite refuses to be useful, after a few dozen games, so he'll likely get replaced by another Wurmcoil. Need a Witchbane Orb in the SB as well, to slow down burn.

Realy, REALLY wish there was some sort of enchantment search in Standard right now because seeing Tempered Steel more consistently probably would have helped, oh... A LOT.

Deck discussion for Tempermental (10/15 States)

I'm new to the game so forgive me if this is a bit stupid. But what is the benefit of Shrine of Loyal Legions over Golem Foundry?

Like the deck.

Several reasons. Watch out, I'm wordy. ;)

For one, cost. Turn 3 needs to be reserved for dropping Tempered Steel, Etched Champion with Metalcraft active, one of the Swords or O-Ring for control. Turns 1 & 2 need to be filled with early build up, especially to keep up with other low-cost decks (G/W humans, Puresteel, RDW). Golem Foundry isn't terrible, it's true, and it could potentially net me a 3/3 creature darn fast. BUT, if I can't play an artifact every turn, it could also be dead on the field.

Also, look at it like this: play Shrine turn 2, play Tempered Steel turn 3, turn 4 I can potentially have 3 3/3's in play. At one point during the tournament, I popped a Shrine with 6 counters on it and 2 Tempered Steel in play. Putting 6 5/5's into play for 3 mana is sooooo nice and shows how this can really shine in long games.

Finally, consistency. I get a counter on the Shrine on all of my upkeeps, whether I play a spell or not. The Foundry is reliant on my playing a spell, where as casting a white spell for the Shrine is just a bonus. And every counter on the Shrine is a creature where as the Foundry takes three counters to produce a single creature.

That was probably more information than you expected or wanted, but I prefer being thorough to giving a throw-away answer. ^.^;;

Thank you for this man. Makes so much sense now.

Also I laughed when I read you getting out 6 5/5's. That would have been a very fun moment.

Much love for the wordy answer.
