Budget Decks: One dollar deck?

by NorthernWarlord on 24 April 2014

Main Deck (60 cards)

Sorceries (4)

Enchantments (2)

Land (54)

Sideboard (4 cards)

Creatures (4)

Submit a list of cards below to bulk import them all into your sideboard. Post one card per line using a format like "4x Birds of Paradise" or "1 Blaze", you can even enter just the card name by itself like "Wrath of God" for single cards.

Deck Description

Are you bored? Does Magic: The Gathering feel old and vapid? Got any useless bucks in your bank account? Ladies and Gentlemen, I have solution.
Use your bank account on nearest MtG marketplace website and buy some cheap cards, craft a deck, and challenge your friends! To double the fun, ask your friend to create such a deck too!
The Budget Decks -series is meant for your free time! These are meant to inspire you, and deck's value is meant to be low! (Between 10 and 20 bucks.)

...Ohh who am I fooling? This deck is just one dollar, man! One dollar!

How to Play

Every single one knows this deck. So many have already created it. I'm just creating my own variation of it now.
So, this deck costs a bit over 1 buck. The value doesn't contain lands, of course, but in the other hand, you don't have to pay for lands, since almost every single player does have whole mountains of unused basic lands. At least I have. And I have this deck in real life too. It wins something about 75% of it's games.

So, the basic idea is to mulligan until you have Treasure Hunt in your opening hand. The most best situation comes when you have both Treasure Hunt and Zombie Infestation in your opening hand.
However, start by casting Treasure Hunt and keep casting Treasure Hunts until you get Zombie Infestation. You'll probably be able to cast it on your next turn. If it is turn 4, you can maybe cast it immediately.
When you have cast Zombie Infestation, discard your hand in order to get zombies.

Deck discussion for Budget Decks: One dollar deck?

wow. this is about as simple a deck as ive ever seen, and yet it works so well O.O

Yeah. I have it in real life. It has beaten something about 75% of its games, as I already said in "How to play" -section.

I recommend 2-3 Reliquary Tower. So if you hit another Treasure Hunt you can keep everything you drew.

2
Posted 25 April 2014 at 12:31

Not only that, but with reliquary tower, you can discard at the end of your opponents' turns, and you can swing in for lethal next turn.

1

the 25% that beat it is the hand removal like thoughtseize.... isn't it

What about 2 more zombie infestation in case they destroy it?

I agree with this XD but seriously, it is such a simple deck XD

0

I know that they can destroy your Infestation, but if I add more of them, it will reduce the effect of Treasure Hunt. And this deck is meant completely for fun, so it is not so horrible if you don't win after all.
I have beaten couple of my friends with this... Those were some great times...

Classic fun. You can go with slightly more expensive versions which include Reliquary Tower for being able to make enough zombies on the following turn to be lethal. I also like Tomb of Urami as something to do if the Zombie plan fails.

Interesting how people still want to add stuff to an ultraminimalistic deck that has one job and a one dollar budget and works :-)

1
Posted 24 April 2014 at 12:48

That's just extremely true.
That's just what I intended to show with this deck. Everyone else has something about 500$ variation of this, while I think I'll manage with a single dollar.
That, that is the real MAGIC.

2

Then again, it's kind of in the nature of a MTG player to get the most out of a deck, concept or combo. It's hard to let that go. But very rewarding when you do and pack out with a deck like this :-)

Also it's very fun to watch all these comments and the disbelief :-)

Around, I suppose :-) I just started playing again half a year ago after a hiatus of almost 15 years. Played from '96 till 2000-2002, I think. I'm just a casual player, roaming this site for ideas, fun and inspiration :-)

Dude, join the club, I must be your double or something! I started out last year, plunging into a dreadful new world of Magic after having learned Gen 2 rules from my Dad. My friend gave me a crappy Boros deck ... 1 Lightning Helix, One Exile spell, and 4 Glory Seekers. Hell, it had 2-3 Boros cards in it. From what I can gather, it too was a 1$ deck, at least to my friend.

I have since found Warlord, and his wonderful budget decks are all the inspiration I need.

And if my name is no indication, I am a hardcore white player with a particular love for Knights. Therefore, I suggest an alternative deck - 26 Islands, 14 Plains, 14 Forests, 4 Treasure Hunts, and 2 Knights of the Reliquary.

It's not budget, but it's my variation. And it uses Knights, and that makes me so very happy!

Thank you again. For everything.

What ... and here I thought that I owed you becoming interested in magic again =)!

Seriously man, I used to dread making decks. My Gen 2 upbringing led to ... awkward deck building ... I could botch a deck with Jace the Mind Sculptor on my side =(. You, along with other MTG vault members (censured) and [name redacted], have let me have fun making decks.

P.S. I would love it if you temporarily abandoned your spendthrift ways ... come to the Dark Side, we have cookies!

Awesomeness :-) I used to love making decks, but I was horrible at them :p I must say the MTG Vault community did help me out a lòt! Warlord's decks are always fun and inspiring to check out, mostly because they always seem "done". Sure, you can add some more expensive cards or splash some this or that here and there, but you don't hàve to! It's like a well-made cocktail. Sure, you can add a slice of lemon to that pint of Long Island Iced Tea, but you're still gonna get wasted without it! :-)

That's how it goes my friend.
First start with cheap ones, then proceed packing some additional punch. That's how my first deck went. And today it is my best deck. It can finish off my opponents as early as turn 4.

Muh, I'm a bit of a Zombie-freak, and Zombie Land isn't a Zombie movie, it's a roadtrip movie that happens to feature some Zombies. Bad ones. Even Swamp Zombies (which can hardly be called a "movie") and The Stink Of Flesh were better zombie movies than Zombie Land. And The Stink Of Flesh had purple zombies, one of which was systematically abused :p

If you want to see a really good recent zombie movie (the best ones were made 4 decades ago), check out Exit Humanity. It remains true to the zombie genre in all its aspects and uses an original setting (i.e. anything but teenagers in a mall).

you need a card that allows no max hand size, like reliquary tower or vensers journal.

Why? The whole point is to discard your entire hand all of the time for all of the zombies.

BlackRazz meant that if I run towers I would be able to discard more cards at first time if I didn't play Infestation before, or at the same turn.

Yeah, i suggested those cards in case if you treasure hunt into another treasure hunt, but it's only turn 3 or something, so you don't have enough lands to play the second treasure hunt, that way you don't have to discard your entire hand and loose a ton of lands you could have discarded.

I like most of the decks that are in your budget set. they usually look fairly effective, and this one also just happens to be a unique approach to tokens. This needs Reliquary Tower. Otherwise, you will just lose almost all of the cards because of maximum hand size. You will be able to play Zombie Infestation on turn 3, which means that you will only have 6 lands in hand. That means that unless if you draw a second Treasure Hunt, you will only be able to make 3 2/2s on turn 3 and not be able to do anything else after that except make a 2/2 every other turn. Also, what happens if someone counters or makes you discard your Treasure Hunt?

0
Posted 27 April 2014 at 05:26

If your treasure hunt is countered ... you're screwed, unless you pick up another. On the bright side, it isn't that likely on turn 2, unless you are playing Jace.

0
Posted 28 April 2014 at 16:28

assuming you go first and can get him out with the right land, you may not have that problem. unless you are in a tournament, you are often unlikely to have to deal with counterspells

Even a single removal spell would be able to stop it.

0

That's why it is only a fun deck. For one dollar, you shouldn't expect much. And for a one dollar deck to win 75 percent of the games it is played in, that is simple genius! Imagine your opponent's face when you beat his 300 dollar deck, and then tell him how much your deck cost! lol. That is worth me liking this deck.

Good luck!

This might sound weird, but SoulOfMirrodin and Jessie, you are both right.

And yet it costs only one buck, and I've had so much fun playing it, regardless did I win or lose.

Also, Elixir of Immortality can bring your Crusher back into your deck, which stops a whole lot of removal and milling (you ARE milling yourself).

At the very least add in those Reliquary Towers. Those are necessary to get enough cards to use Zombie Infestation with effectively. Also, another possibility for a wincon is using Lightning Storm.

Okay I dropped down to 2 Zombie infestation and put in an Elixir of Immortality to make my graveyard reusable and have yet to have a problem with the deck.

This deck isn't taking much suggestions, but I guess you could go and suggest it to KnightoftheHokeyPokey's deck. You can find it along other hot decks in hot page! It is called Ohh... That combo.

not to steal Knightofthehokeypokey's thunder but, Leveler and labratory maniac would be a great asset for this deck.

Lol, those were not my ideas. Read the description of my deck to see whose it is.

Grimoire of the Dead is mediocre in this combo. On the other hand, it might go well with your zombie deck Northern ...

Alright my friend, I have a special request/challenge for you.
I'd like you to build a deck under the following conditions:
A) Must build a combo using Hundred-Handed One;
B) Must be a two-color deck; and
C) Must be a Budget deck ($10 or less).

Challenge accepted? (=

The deck is done. Look for a deck called:
"Budget Decks: Challenge of 100".

NorthernWarlord, need your help big time on this one. I hate stealing your comments/decks all the time, but I have no other way to reach out for advice.

http://www.mtgvault.com/jessie/decks/creature-challenge-1merfolk/

Doing a Creature Tournament. Have 2 creature types from every color including 2 types from artifacts that I am going to make decks for. A kobold deck, dragon deck, human deck, angel deck, fairy deck, merfolk deck, elf deck, elephant deck, vampire deck, zombie deck, myr deck, and thopter deck.

No rules with budget. The decks have to be at least Vintage/Legacy legal. No banned cards. And most of the creatures have to match the type of deck that you picked out: for example, don't add elephants to a human deck, or don't make a vampire deck with just one vampire. Those are the basic rules.

After all 12 decks are built, I will face each deck off against the other one. So that, for example, the Merfolk deck will face every single deck one time, and I will write down his record out of 11 battles. Then I will do that with every other deck. The deck with the best overall record will determine with Creature Type is supreme!

As always, I need your advice. Everyone's help. Tell me what you think about the 1st Deck of the tournament. And suggest improvements. I will try to return the favor with anyone that helps out.

Hey Northern, what do you think about adding a Psychatog? They're really cheap and would still keep the deck around a dollar, and your Psycha could use the discarded cards from Zombie Infestation.
