Hey, Northy!
Long time since my last visit here, had a stop playing lately!
But now i'm again on it :D

Any chance to see a Budget Deck based on the morph mechanic?
I would like to build one, but have few ideas and few time to think about it.

I would like to use:
- Aven guy
- Sage Mauler
- Mythic guy with manifest from FR (don't remember the name, and i got 1X)
- Mystery trail

Would you like to help?

Thanks in advance!

PS: as always, +1

Not sure you can build Whisperwood elemental in a budget list xD Some people say its the best card out of FTR

Not with the 4 that you need to be playing in manifest.

Well Whisperwood maybe is a bit out the budget territory, but i got just one so it will be a 1x in the deck, and for keeping it budget it can be placed to SB just to say : "hey i'm here if you want to use me". Point is that i would appreciate some ideas for this kind of deck. The elemental is not the point here, but just a sweet addition. I won't buy more and i don't think i'm goin to trade some!
So, feel free to screw it, no problems at all!

Thanks!

darsteel myr, in the sb for indestructible.

Crypt champ for double strike, the champ even goes to the grave when you cast him :D

Have you thought about possibly throwing a Thought Gorger in there? It would give you an ability to discard some more cards if you need to, would give Soulflayer trample, would be pretty powerful, and gives you decent draw power.

Good Idea, but then this deck slows down and moves towards more of a toolbox deck for the flayer, whereas right now it can function on its own. I would place all of the guys mentioned so far into the SB, to adjust for the deck your playing against, along with Xathrid Slyblade for when your opponent is playing targeted bounce or exile effects, and hover myr so that he can have vigilance and attack and defend when you are in a tight spot :D

After thinking about it also... Is bitter revelation ok here? Is it better than altar's reap? it drops two in the bin draws two like reap... :/

You can sac Myr to reap...

Right, but I was thinking of moving the myr to the side most of the time hand having the slyblade in the main... but then we are getting into what WE would do with the deck rather than this deck, so your right. As it stands reap is better here.

It depends on the situation. Usually I'll use it as a removal, but if I really need my Darksteel Myr dead, I know where to shoot it.

Sorry for the odd request, Northy, but could you make a not-exactly-budget (sub-$50) standard deck that isn't just aggro?
I'm getting creamed three times every Friday night, and I have come to the master for assistance (a la Karate Kid).
Thanks!

1

Good standard that isn't expensive is really tough, aggro is probably the best way forward, and thus you should build Boss Sligh, so simple to use, I don't think it needs a single rare! Just play tonnes of 1 drops (Akroan Crusader, Satyr Hoplite etc) and then stuff to target, dragon mantle and titan's strength etc

im a hypocrite though because standard mono-black is too limited to make an entire deck off of.

No, it can be done, its just better to splash colours, and then you might as well play Abzan or Mardu!

* Why mono-black? This screams for another colour, most likely blue. It would give you access to important abilities like hexproof and offer other ways to get creatures into your grave. Blue:
- Mindshrieker: Excellent way to fill your grave and deal some damage at the same time. If he dies he provides flying for Soulflayer.
- Tower Geist: Okay, costs 4 but he gets you two cards, one of which you draw and one that will hit the grave! He has flying himself.
- Baleful Strix: Would be wonderful in this, but costs 3-4 dollars.
Green:
- Bassara Tower Archer: Hexproof and Reach for 2 mana
- Thronweald Archer: Deathtouch and reach for 2 mana
- Pheres-Band Warchief: Trample and Vigiliance (both are pretty important when you are planning on putting all your eggs into a single basket!)

* Your current gameplan seems to be to actually play those creatures that provided the needed abilities and then sacrifice them. Which is a slow and arkward way to power Soulflayer. A wonderful alternative: STINKWEED IMP!

* Soulflayer can amass tons of abilities but he will always stay a 4/4. So I suggest some pump but since we are running out of slots, we have to be clever - I think, for this deck, creatures with scavange would work best. It doesn't matter if you mill yourself like I suggested or sacrifice your creatures (or just let them die in combat), they can serve a second time and boost Soulflayer. But the best options for creatures with scavenge are black-green:
- Varolz, the Scar-Stripped
- Dreg Mangler
- Sluiceway Scorpion

* As the deck is you might want to sacrifice your own creatures, right? So maybe replace Geth's Verdict with Diabolic Edict. This change is probably not needed if you make some of the other changes I suggested.

0

with the changes being so drastic it might be better if you took this deck and dif your own vesrion?

0
Posted 19 February 2015 at 12:05

Why? I don't do budget decks. Moreover, I don't build decks on Vault for other people or for fame, I build decks that I will use IRL - and this kind of deck wouldn't get anywhere in my group nor is it interesting enough for me to build around.
The reason I comment on other decks is to help them out and to make them better withing the limitations given. And this deck could be a lot better, budget or not. My suggestions may seem drastical but you have to admit that I adressed serious flaws. Just because the deck is made by Northy doesn't mean it's perfect. In fact, I made the observation that the less criticism he gets, the more sloppy his decks become.

Despite, the second and fourth point of my list can be applied without altering the deck much.

0

Though I appreciate your suggestions a lot Puschkin, I agree with Necrumlsice. The ones you are suggesting are pretty harsh. Don't get me wrong though, since I'm adding some Diabolic Edicts and Stinkweed Imps right now.

0

I think he has a pretty good point about splashing, I'd like to see it Sultai so you have green self mill support, blue disruption and all the pretty cards like baleful Strix and the hexproofers. If it wasn't on a budget, I'd be throwing in a playset of deathrite Shaman ASAP! XD

0
Posted 19 February 2015 at 17:02

That's why they are called SUGGESTIONs, you have the options to not use them :)

And if you know me, I usually don't make drastical suggestions, it's just that I don't understand why a deck like this is mono-coloured to begin with (for the reasons I stated).

:)

Like the deck Idea. Seen an expensive version with Chromanticore already, but not as budget mono black :)

Cairn Wanderer was mentioned already too.

What is Fleshbag Marauder for? I don't see tribute fodder except the rats. Same for Altar's Reap.
Isn't Sign in Blood the better version, especially in Mono Black?
Or maybe a Skirk Ridge Exhumer would be an idea? Discard option and Tribute fodder in 1 card.

I like Rotting Rats alot. Maybe a bit hand control could work in here. Rakshasa's Secret pops into my mind. But maybe there is some other card that lets both players discard?! Also the self milling could help.

I guess you prefer Swiftfoot Boots over Xathrid Slyblade?!
Liege of the Pit is the cheapest dark trample I could find (with his morph).
Or Abyssal Persecutor is an option, if you keep Marauder and Reap!?

Not related question,
does Crypt Champion make return Vengevine from the graveyard?
Because you cast a extra creature from your graveyard.

0

Sign in blood > Altar's reaping

0
Posted 26 February 2015 at 16:48

Could be wrong...but Altar's Reaping has synergy with Soulflayer.

Example: Use Altar's Reaping on Gurmag Swiftwing.
Draw 2 cards and Put Swiftwing in the graveyard.
Now play Soulflayer.
Use Delve to exile Swiftwing from the graveyard.

Outcome is that you ensured (by sacking a creature) Soulflayer is a 4/4 creature with 1. Flying 2. Haste 3. First Strike.

You could sack Nighthawk as well. Or Mirri.

Sacking Myr makes the Soulflayer Indestructible.
Sacking Skyblade gives Soulflayer Hexproof.
Sacking Nighthawk grants Soulflayer with Lifelink.

1
Posted 26 February 2015 at 18:30

While this is true, is it really worth the extra investment to run it? Yeah you get delve fodder, but there are downfalls to the card that shouldn't be overlooked: 1. it costs 2 cards to get you 2 cards, netting you no card advantage. 2. You need to spend mana and a turn to get a creature out before you can use altar's reap. sign in blood can be used right away when you have 2 open mana.

A card with a looting effect (such as tormenting voice, albeit red) would be much better because you get your selective delve fodder without having to spend time and resources to first play the card you want in the grave.

Not disagreeing with you friend. Nor am I trying to speak for Northy.
Sign in Blood is quicker and isn't 2 cards for 2 cards. I agree.
However, I do think I see what he is trying to do.
He is trying to put in as many cards as he can that combos with Soulflayer.
In that effort, Reap is very nice.
And if he does play against other 20 dollar decks...than the one turn lost (and one creature lost) with Reap vs
Sign in Blood my not be as hard to come back from.

Northy said it best, "Abuse Soulflayer's ability the best you can with this deck. Cards like Gurmag Swiftwing and Vampire Nighthawk become a tasty feast for your demonic pal when he hits the field" in his How to Play section.

I would like to point out, for what it is worth...probably not much...but Tendrils and Verdict could also be used on your own creatures to feed Delve/Soulflayer. Would be silly to do so, but just wanted to point out the combos/synergy he is trying to go for.
On that note...Culling the Weak would be a neat card for Soulflayer. Not modern, of course. But neat.

0
Posted 26 February 2015 at 21:18

Another very nice card, not Modern is Innocent Blood.
You sack your Swiftwing and opponent sacks one of his creatures too.
You then Delve Swiftwing with Soulflayer.
It is better than the Geth's Verdict card, that is for sure.

Awesome as I expected!
Cards with the new Exploit ability such as Rakshasa Gravecaller and Vulturous aven could fit in this deck!
