How to Play

Inspired and requested by jaeger997.

Ahh... Who wouldn't like a little session of good old torturing?
...oh right, yeah. Your opponents probably.

Cast cards to force your opponent to discard cards and take damage. You can also create some pretty nasty situations to your opponent, for as example something like the following:

On turn 5, your board contains:
-5 Swamps (tapped)
-Crawlspace
-Rackling
-Painful Quandary

The situation above already means that your opponent will suffer eventually from both Rackling and Painful Quandary, while being unable of hitting you hard thanks to the Crawlspace.

Deck discussion for Budget Decks: Torture

The only potential issue I see is that the opponent summons a flier or a trampler that can hit hard and just swing with it all the time (which would make it difficult to protect yourself using Crawlspace). My suggestion for this is having spot removal (Go for the Throat/Doom Blade/Ultimate Price) or something to give one of your creatures deathtouch (Touch of Moonglove/Necrobite) instead of Geth's Verdict.

But this looks fun to play (especially multiplayer. Oh the hate one would bring :) )

Should Sideboard The Rack for no other reason than completion. Fits to well with the theme.

Is there any particular reason for you to NOT run a playset of Hymn to Tourach? It it a billion times (maybe more) better than pulling teeth. And it doesn't cost a lot of money either. And I think I would rather have Quest for the Nihil Stone than Painful Quandry. Overall I have this recommendation to improve the deck:
-2 Painful Quandry
-1 Liliana's Specter
-1 Ravenous Rats
-4 Pulling Teeth

+4 Hymn to Tourach
+4 Quest for the Nihil Stone

Another thing is this: I am concerned about the inclusion of Rackling over additional Wheel of Torture, is it purely flavour-wise? The reason I ask is because Rackling probably have the most vulnerable card type in the game, artifact creature.

I agree about Hymn over pulling teeth, but I like to control what they discard. Distress or duress are both cheap $ and really handy.

I believe you two cannot see the flavor of Pulling Teeth.

Sure, I can see see the flavour of Pulling Teeth, however there is also plenty of torture flavour if you read the flavour text of some of the versions of Hymn to Tourach:
"The eerie, wailing Hymn caused insanity even in hardened warriors."
That is psychological torture, or:
"Members of the Order often played the Hymn on instruments made from their victims' bones."
Imagine having our arm cut off and then turned into a flute that plays Hymn to Tourach, yep super creepy.

If you take out the rack and wheel of torture you have a modern deck

The Rack is modern legal though.

How I overlooked that I'll never know. I'd just swap it for wheel of torture I guess.

Maybe use Liliana's Caress instead of Megrim. Is one cheaper and does exactly the same thing.

Too bad it is not cheaper money-wise.

Megrim can target Planeswalkers, the Caress cannot.

Ah, yes, I suppose it does cost more. (Just went and checked). Also, didn't think about the dealing damage to plansewalkers instead. Also, Maybe something you could would be Shrieking Affliction. That seems fairly cheap, but not sure how many cards this deck would usually be able to keep the opponents hand size down to, not having played it. Sorry.

Northy, you said you wanted to do a competitive tournament, I just did a sealed PPTQ, this might interest you: http://www.mtgvault.com/gothy/decks/brainstorming-another-thing/

This is one of my favorite types of decks. Makes your opponent want to 'pull their teeth out'!!! Try out the fleshbag marauder, one of my favorite cards for creature control early that you might need. Cheers!
