Deck discussion for [Modern] New Dark Soulstomp

*cough* *splutter* *cough* *dies* I just checked Tarmogoyf's price and there's no way in hell I'm paying that much per card :/ I'm just hoping that Rest in Peace brings his price down, but that's probably just my wishful thinking :/

As much as I like the idea of this deck, Dark Confidant and Tarmogoyf's prices are the main reason I'm not going to be building this deck (or similar).

Llanowar Augur feels a little out of place here. It's a 0/3 in an aggro deck with a pump ability that can only be activated in your upkeep. Feels a little slow for this type of deck...

Oh, I don't own this deck.. I wasn't playing when most of the expensive cards in here were released.. and I'm not spending $750 on a single deck D: I'd rather a case of decent cognac for that price :D Instead I run this via proxy to test against friends' decks before tournaments.. when I ran the older version (pre Rancor) it raped face on Cockatrice.. but I've since fallen out of the meta, so I don't know if it's still great or what..

Llanowar Augur does two things: 1) He provides much needed Trample, because Soulgorger is worthless without it), and 2) He dies, because Wreath + Pit-Skulk / Birds are a great alternate win-con. He can be a bit slow, and I forget to pop him all the time.. but he's pretty much become a staple in all of my green decks ever since I learned a thing or three from seeing Wump's decks.

I guess that makes sense. Have you perhaps though of the evoke creature that gives +3/+3 (Briarhorn)? It may not give trample, but it does grant the boost at instant speed (it has flash) and boost the affect of the wreath. Ring of Kalonia could also be used to grant trample, just an idea.

The problem with that is Briarhorn doesn't fit the mana curve, and doesn't grant trample. Soulstomp is the spiritual successor to the 26/14 stompy deck, named after its mana curve. Soulstop replaces 4x of the 2-drops with Phyrexian Soulgorger, and thus the mana curve becomes 26/10/4.

Ring of Kalonia is an interesting suggestion, I'll have to try it out. I'm not sure if the green pump is better than Horned Helm's flat +1/+1 (applies to Bob and Soulgorger) and instant-speed equipping. The progressive green pump could definitely prove beneficial on Birds and Pit-Skulk, though, when a match's pace is forced to slow down.

Getting off topic here, but trying to think of ways to give trample has actually given me an idea for a UG deck using Simic's Graft and Bramblewood Paragon. Bramblewood's the main source of trample in my elf decks.

You know, half of what's interesting here isn't so much the deck by itself (which, I'll admit, I would have to be shown how to play correctly) but the conversation you two are having about it. :) Soulgorger threw me off for a moment until I went back after reading the comments and really LOOKED at every card again. This deck is meant to win crazy fast, isn't it? Afterall, you don't want to give Soulgorger's cost to get to big...

The more I look at this deck, the more I wish it were feasible for me to build it and play it. XD Like Ded, though, I refuse to pay that much money for the 'Goyfs and Bobs. If there was a way to replace them with something less bank-breaking, I know I could get everything else easily. Hmm....

Either way, wicked neat deck!

Cabbage and I don't chat often, but when we do, it's normally done on one of our decks (like this) :p

I'm actually tempted to knuckle down and attempt construction of a slightly more wallet friendly version of this :?

I predict it can be done. As a matter of fact I'm going to do that right now ;)

Who taught you how to make Dark Soulstomp? This one is gorgeous =]

As for a budget one, I think you can do just fine nixing the Goyfs, but what makes the original Soulstomp design get its "Dark" offspring name **is** Dark Confidant. Otherwise it'll just be some weird bastard child Stompy with black splashed in =/

I'm a little late to my own party, but thanks :D I took this one on Cockatrice and was dominating top modern decks at the time. I'm super disappointed I'll always have better things to do with $1500 than build this, because I'd really love to show some friends what stompy is /really/ about ;)
