Deck Description

Pentavus is one the most broken cards Mirrodin provided us when combined with certain cards. This deck looks at some of the combos Pentavus can shine in.

This is definitely one of my less budget-friendly decks, the other one being my infinite turns artifact deck: https://www.mtgvault.com/spazdiesfirst360/decks/infinite-turn-shenanigans/

How to Play

Unfortunately, the combos Pentavus is great in are somewhat complex, and require a fair amount of cards to achieve. Adding a Soul Warden to any of the following combos will allow you to gain infinite life. Combo #3 was inspired by the deck The Vintage Vault by mathijsderouck on tappedout.net; https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/the-vintage-vault/

Combo 1;
You need to have a Krark-Clan Ironworks, at least one Anointed Procession, a Pentavus, and an Altar of the Brood on the battlefield and fully functioning (i.e. no Damping Matrix on the field). Tap one land and remove a +1/+1 counter from Pentavus to create two Pentavites. Sacrifice one for the Krark-Clan Ironworks, then use one mana generated by the Ironworks and sacrifice the other Pentavite to put a +1/+1 counter on Pentavus. Use the second mana and remove a +1/+1 counter from Pentavus to create two Pentavites. Repeat this process infinitely to mill all of your opponents' libraries.

Combo 2;
You need to have a Krark-Clan Ironworks, at least one Anointed Procession, a Pentavus, and at least one Cathars' Crusade on the battlefield and fully functioning. Tap one land and remove a +1/+1 counter from Pentavus to create two Pentavites. Because of Cathars' Crusade, two +1/+1 counters are put onto Pentavus. Sacrifice one Pentavite to add two mana. Spend one and remove a +1/+1 counter from Pentavus to create two Pentavites. Repeat this infinitely to create infinite hugely buffed Pentavites and an even larger Pentavus.

Combo 3 (does not require Pentavus);
You need to have a Krark-Clan Ironworks, an Altar of the Brood, and at least two Myr Retrievers on the battlefield and fully functioning. Sacrifice one Myr for two mana, return an artifact from your graveyard to your hand (it doesn't matter for this combo), then sacrifice the other Myr for two mana. Then, return the other Myr Retriever from your graveyard to your hand, cast it using the mana generated by Krark-Clan Ironworks, and sacrifice it again for two mana and return the other Myr Retriever. This effectively mills all of your opponents' libraries.

Additional cards are provided in case things go wrong;
-Steel Overseer: in case you cannot draw a Cathars' Crusade. Will slow down combo #2, but can get the job done.
-Mycosynth Golem: not really needed, but there so you can possibly get a Pentavus out quicker.
-Myr Retriever: in case a key artifact card gets milled or destroyed. You can use two Myr Retrievers to also do a infinite mill combo.
-Enlightened Tutor: to help speed up the deck and raise your chances of combo-ing off.
-Academy Ruins: also there in case a key artifact card gets destroyed or milled.
-Tolarian Academy: in case you cannot draw a Krark-Clan Ironworks. Will slow down all of your combos, but will prevent you from bricking and ultimately being stomped. Tolarian Academy can also be used to put out stuff depending on how many artifacts you have.
-Vizier of Tumbling Sands: to untap cards like Academy Ruins, Argivian Archaeologist, and Tolarian Academy to get multiple uses out of them.
-Argivian Archaeologist: in case a key artifact card gets destroyed or milled.
