Deck Description

I have been playing sulati and U/B control since Kharns standard cam in. I am enjoying the way these decks played but wanted something a bit more resiliant to all the aggro in my meta.

I got to thinking that running monocoloured would smooth out my mana and mean I can main board stuff like Drown in Sorrow and get my removal online quicker with no CIPT lands, the radiant fountains/siege and Gary should keep my life total healthy.

Will run this at local FNM to see how it plays out.

How to Play

Keep the board clear with your removal and then lay down some sieges/leeches and top it off with Gary.

sideboard choices are quite simple really;
Grindclock; against control to reomve some of their answers counter spells etc.

Mardu Strike Leader; again against opposing control, they will often side out a lot of their removal (bile blight etc) and this guy allows us to go wide game 2, with dash returning him back to hand will mean only counter magic or downfall should hit him and should provide enough tokens to keep up the pressure.

Executioner; for BW heroic and Abzan

Agent of Erebos; against whip decks

Deck discussion for MBC standard

Nice! I'm not sure how 1 Gary is going to play out, is it going to be enough?

I know the palace siege can be used to grab Gary if he's put in the GY, but really you may run into situations where you play gary and the opponent just doesn't remove it since it's just a 2/4.

Some other considerations for control against aggro/creature decks: Archfiend of Depravity, Ulcerate (although MORE life loss sucks, but killing a Mantis Rider for 1 mana is worth it), Doomwake? (might be too slow though), Herald of Torment (feeds gary too!)

Fun card: One, single empty the pits. Mine as well use that graveyard for something.

Love this deck concept though!

I second empty the pits. I run it in my ub online and it never fails to disappoint. The instant speed is sick.

It's funny cause I run a single copy in my W/U/B/G deck just like I used to run a debt to the deathless when it was standard. No one really saw it coming. Nice deck btw.

I like the idea and may find space in my sideboard for it, a lot of sweepers will be sided out for game 2 so will be a nice surprise :)

very good deck! i think you lose out on not running tasigur, and murderous cut may deserve a 2-of slot. i love mono black coming back. i literally just tried to build a list an hour ago

what dou you think of a urborg, tomb of yawgmoth to make the radiant fountains make B mana?

0
Posted 06 February 2015 at 17:58

Yawgmoth is not in as don't want to anble my opponenets black mana, the best thing about this deck is that it runs 0 CIPT lands, means you can get removal up quicker :)

0

You should REALLY put Urborg in. Adds to your leeches AND lets you fetch for radiant fountain with Polluted Delta.

It can however be a double edge sword.

With sultai and abzan being such powerful builds, the less black you give them the better

0

Don't you think even with the sweepers you're a bit too slow for the format? And it might be worth the white splash for Sorin, because he is just so good!

1

yes. so my idea for speeding up mono black in standard is 4x of the following : waste not, dark deal, thoughtseize, despise

0
Posted 06 February 2015 at 18:32

He has soooo much spot removal as well. I don't think he's slow at all.

0
Posted 06 February 2015 at 18:58

No, the spot removal will go some way but Abzan decks will munch through the removal, you 1 for 1 with U/W heroic and you're SO slow that U/B control will resolve an ashiok and just defend it with tonnes of counters, decks like Mardu and temur just wait till you run out and drop a bomb. Without an ability to pressure or stem the tide with board presence you need to be a powerful control deck, this deck is half way through Midrange-Control and it can't beat the dedicated midrange or control decks, and the devotion is too light to go over, which is why you kinda want to add more of them black symbols! I like herald or torment, and I'd warn you off of Master of the Feast because card advantage is so key in this standard season. This may sound quite scathing but i don't mean to be harsh

0
Posted 07 February 2015 at 10:07

Thoughtseize removes most of Abzans threats and Abzan run 0 coutners so all my removal will resolve, don't fear this matchup. B/W heroic is where the executioners come in, with even one siege on khans mode I can keep the one big threat that B/W presents off the board.

my big fear is U/B control, mainly it does what i want to do but better (played it myself before brewing this baby) I think an empty the pits may be needed for the control matchup, wait for them to flash in PLa and when they are tapped out, go wide!

0
Posted 08 February 2015 at 22:43

Abzan has thoughtseize of its own and better creatures than you, U/W doesn't mind losing 1 creature, and then they munch you with the rest, and U/B will NEVER tap out to play PLA because that leaves them wide open

0
Posted 09 February 2015 at 19:03

Abzan and B/W heroic I still feel confortable with, my only hope against U/B control just now is that I am faster with having no CIPT lands, will be testing this deck this week before the PPTQ. Fingers crossed :)

0

It might be worth saying sod it about U/B and focusing on the games you can win. Abzan and heroic usually crunch control, the only one I would be hugely worried about it Sultai Control

This looks like a fun deck to play and a pain to play against. I love mono black builds like this. I even made a mono black tron deck the other day using Soulflayer (I'm not really counting the fact that Chromanticore add the other colors to the deck though). Black is always so crazy good!

I feel that ugin doesn't fit here, since you barely have any permanents other than lands.

0
Posted 07 February 2015 at 20:19

He isn't going to be using his ultimate, mainly his minus x ability to clear the field. Also another reason to not have that many permanents

0

fair enough i guess

0
Posted 07 February 2015 at 21:09

Bro, +7 life and +7 cards in a control deck that late in the game is oftentimes the extra gas you need to squeeze a win. His ultimates in this deck could very often look like drawsevengainseven lilly, palace siege, gary. Boom.

Or a big fat leech in the mix.

But ALWAYS a new hand full of removal, and a comfy new life total.

0
Posted 08 February 2015 at 09:49

Fair point. I was just looking at Ugin as a means to clear the field in one shot, and then slowly bolt him while killing off what few creatures they manage to get out after the wipe. I'm not saying he won't use his ultimate, just that it's not the primary reason I see Ugin being cast

0

Ugin is just that good. i would not leave home without him in anything besides an aggro deck!

Perilous Vault could be a good choice would get rid of some of your stuff but it's in a good mana cost to not do that aswell

I toyed with vault but feel Ugin does a similar job and provides a bit of reach.

Oh one further thought, if you are up against a deck that relies heavily on one or two cards (Sidisi Whip for example) stain the mind may come in handy.

I like the card and maybe deserves a place in the side, not too sure how useful a 1 of copy would be though?

0

Not sure, but if you happen to draw it, it really pulls its weight.

Would be good if you use Mardu Strike Leader to fill the board out a bit more and convoke it.

I just think it's an underused card, almost like a slaughter games. ALMOST.

Have tweaked the deck, moved Gary to the sideboard as he has been better as a surprise factor game 2, sideboard has been tweaked as well to include Empty the pits and Stain the mind.

Really wanted Murderous cut in the 75 somewhere if anyone can think of what to cut let me know :)

Will report back after Sunday on how the PPTQ went.

0

Murderous cut would have to replace a hero's downfall. Not sure if it's necessary in this deck, but could try it out.

0

I would drop the two pharikas cure for two murderous cut, unless you're really married to that two life

0

Yup, Kind of married to that two life for the aggro matchup, looks like my cuts will be held until rotation lol

Well 2-4 for the day, match one I was mana screwed then game two did not see a single piece of removal. After that it was downhill, just didn't get the breaks, Palace siege is an all star though a single one resolved won me a couple of games over the day.

For tweaks I think I will be removing the leeches and relying on Siege and Ugin as win cone, will probably max out on discard as well as not being able to respond to spells was a bit frustrating (especially coming from playing a u/b deck prior to this event)

Will tweak and update the deck after some thoughts :)

How did the Drown in sorrows perform? I feel their value is very play-draw biased against the current metagame. You asked about Murderous cut. Personally I would add the fourth Crux of Fate and Bile Blight (8 cards main to deal with tokens), cut 1 Silence the Believers and add 2 Murderous cuts, sideboarding 2 drown in sorrows to bring against aggro/tokens on the play. The mainboard removal would look like this:

1 Silence the Believers
4 Bile Blight
4 Heroes Downfall
4 Crux of Fate
2 Murderous Cut

Also, the full 4 Sign in blood seems fundamental for MBC.

What do you think?

This deck is great! Congratulations for the creation! =)

Thanks you for the comments, I am actually thinking of dropping the leeches which will allow me to run more removal. I like the main board dorwn in sorrow as it hits many different targets, it can be crux's 5-6 against aggro decks.

Still tweaking but will think this will only come out for FNM and I will stick with U/B for proper events.

I run a single dismember in my modern pride deck (W/U). I could hard cast it if you played an urborg.

to mak this into a better budget form of the deck id add a play set of grey instead of the ugin and maybe another steady way to keep your opponent losing life

Stain the mind is crazy I would run couple of then in side board. That would mess up so many standard deck these days with all the combos. Really like this deck
