Deck Description

Hi everyone! I'm a fairly new player to magic and this my take on abusing the constellation mechanic from journey into nyx. I've only watched FNM at my LGSs and i just think it'd be fun for me to join in too. All CONSTRUCTIVE criticism is welcomed and if yo udon't mind just reason out to help me understand better.

I'm mostly gonna be casually playing this deck but it'll be awesome if this can go competitive.

Thanks for checking out guys!

Edit (1/5/2014) - Swapped out herald of torment for master of the feasts. this creates a faster paced game where they need an answer for it, paying 3 life or keep getting hit for 5 each turn.
Considering mana confluence for that extra needed mana in swapping the for the guild gates .

How to Play

Deck type: Orzhov aggro-centric (maybe combo too)
Mechanic addition: Athreos and constellation
Focus: beatdown hard and fast and force them to make bad decisions.

Most of it is rather straight up aggressive creature base and just filling up the board with enchantment creatures with bestow and using Underworld Coinsmith to gain that extra reach of damage at the end.

Lots of use of bestow like spiteful return and gnarled scarehide to beef up our smaller 1/2/3 drop creatures and swing in hard along with other enchantment buffers, as well as constantly triggering constellation of the Coinsmith.

Other ways of getting opponent down while life-gaining is of course our friendly life sucking merchant. get you out of range of lethal while putting your opponent on the clock since majority of your creatures and are black costed creatures.

I was thinking of other constellation creatures like Grim guardian for that extra life reduction clock on the opponent. Probably Nighthowler too depending if my creatures are meant to die a lot, even though its aggro, most of the interaction is with the Coinsmith and gray merchant as finishers, but also we can give some love a gifted brain maggot that deals the final blow. :)

Coinsmith is not the win condition but rather a factor of the win condition when the game draws out to the last ticks of damage. Gray merchant and master of the feast along with Athreos is usually the big threats.

Thought-seize and brain maggot are just to look at your opponents hand, gain insight as well as just remove any threats early that will harm athreos. Maggot is more against control matchups

Like i said, i'm open to a lot of constructive criticism to make this deck better, all help is welcomed!

Deck discussion for Stars of Orzhova

Now that I think of it, this deck has no kill spells...

kill spells?

Spells that destroy your opponents creatures. Doom Blade, Bile Blight, Ultimate Price and Hero's Downfall are the most used in current standard format.

ahh right. supposably i would if this was any current standard meta deck. in this scenario, i actually want my creatures to die, that way, my opponent is forced to make a decision of either paying 3 life to get rid of my creatures or let them bounce it back into my hand to only play it again and cast more constellation triggers thanks to Athreos.

or at least that's the plan. only problem i can think of running into by this deck is exiling, but with supreme verdict running around, i'm pretty sure its more of harm to them rather than to me. pay 3 life for each creature killed for 4 mana or 4 mana bounce all creatures back into my hand.

you only have 1 constellation creature... you won't be triggering the ability that often.

good point... perhaps i'm betting too much on the underworld coinsmith for that constellation, i'm still play testing grim guardian if the deck is being slowed down. maybe the title is a bit misleading.

aaaand fixed!
