Deck Description

The name has little to do with function and more to do with history. This is the same life gain deck that I have been slowly working since I began playing. Some of the cards are literally from the first starter deck I ever bought. I only recently got back into magic and spent about six bucks to revamp this thing. I'm probably between 60-80 bucks into this deck at this point but I mean, at this point it just IS mtg for me. This does not represent a dream deck or an idealized version of a deck. Everything down to the sideboard and editions (for the most part) are accurate). We'll see how it does at legacy tournament this week. Also, if anyone has suggestions for mana spawn, please help. Main problem I run into is having all the cards I need and no way to get them all out efficiently. I could cut down on the delayers for some good ramp strategy.

How to Play

This deck revolves around buffing and attaching auras two a few key creatures, mostly to take advantage of double strike. In a prolonged match, I have gotten a 21/14 hearthfire hobgoblin with flying , double strike and lifelink. That was in turn 8. That is also why there are a few cards in here meant solely to slow down the pace of the game. Obviously you want to try and save Armored ascension, and scourge of the nobilis for creatures with double strike. Splinter twins is for balefire liege, and wake the reflections if for the copies of Balefire liege produced with splinter twins, making it possible to get up to six of those master buffers and part time punishers on the field with only two in the deck. Pretty much everything else is focused on delay or on getting those auras out faster. Felidar Sovereign of course is there for the late game condition win, and the angel is an ace in the hole/hail marry for a late game comeback. I've also played friendly matches where the tokens (which are just there to buy time) got buffed out of their little, expendable minds and won the game. With this deck, you pretty much know by turn three if things are going your way. I did actually beat a pro running elves with this deck (before this most recent iteration) though that was sort of a fluke. He destroyed me next round. I think this deck provides a clear plan of attack with a decent amount of flexibility. Plus, it's fun to see my first starter deck all grown up. Please comment with suggestions, criticism or (fingers crossed) trickles of golden praise.

Deck discussion for From the Ashes

I'm no specialist on legacy decks but here are my thoughts:
When using white and control/ delay mechanics cards like "Ghostly Prison"/ "Sphere of Safety"/ "Windborn Muse" do a good job protecting you from attacking creatures.
Personally I would cut the lifegain part (or at last move it into your sideboard) and try to make the deck faster. "Knight of the White Orchid", "Gift of Estates", "Weathered Wayfarer" can ramp a little bit, a rare gift among white. Especially "Knight of the White Orchid" with his 2/2 first strike body can be a nice card. Commander recently re-introduced the medallions like "Pearl Medallion".
Another point is carddraw/ tutors. Your "How to play" features the combination of "Splinter Twin" and "Wake the Reflections" but you only got 2 "Heliod's Pilgrim" here to search for an aura card. White features some really good enchantment searchers. Adding some of those would also allow you to reduce the numbers of enchantments because you can search for them.
Last point is protection and landbase. Your 21/14 can easily be removed with a "Doom Blade", "Journey into Nowhere" and so on. So a little protection would be interesting. That could be 'protection from XYZ' or indestructibility, bot cards available to white. I would look for some duallands as many of your spells feature double {W} or {R}{W}. "Boros Garrison" and "Battlefield Forge" are to cheap ($) lands that might be of interest. "Slayers' Stronghold" and "Sunhome, Fortress of the Legion" are two support lands that could fit into this deck. The stronghold gives a creature +2/+0 and hast for {R}{W} while Sunhome provides a creature with double strike for {2}{R}{W}.

All in all the deck looks a little bit unstable in relation to modern or standard decks where you try to get 4 copies of your important cards into your deck. But this could also com form the legacy legality as many of the few legacy decks I have looked into looked like this. One of the reasons I nearly never give advice on such decks, modern with it's nearly 10000 cards is enough. I don't need to double that in legacy ;)
If you need help/suggestions on another deck, just leave a comment.

Greetings
Muktol

Thanks for the land suggestions. Most of the protection against and hexproofing I've found were just too mana expensive for an already struggling deck. It's been pretty viable to just come back with more creatures and buffs, or spread out the love. That 21/14 was actually a desperation move as my other creatures had been destroyed already (Go figure). Still, I'll look into it. Will not cut life gain, life gain is central to the deck and always has been. I've already cut a lot of it out where it wasn't connected to damage dealers, but that is a major part of this deck and I really need to focus more on speeding it up. For that, will check out your ramp suggestions and see if I can't replace some of the cards like Odric and Flamewright, unless you have another idea. Thanks a bunch for the comment and suggestions therein. Feel free to peruse decks at your leisure though they are mostly from a "long time ago" . Too focused on this one for now to care much about them.

What do you think of mother of runes for added protection? It's four dollars at our closest seller.

In all honesty this deck is a casual fun deck (nothing wrong with that) which isn't honed to do something efficiently like most tournament decks. Unless playing against a hard control deck most matches in a competitive legacy format are over by turn 4 or 5 if not the game is probably one sided and the outcome can be assumed.
Your running a bunch of enchantments to put on creatures that don't have hexproof setting yourself up to be 2 for 1'd. It's generally a bad strategy.
Your mana curve is horrible considering your lack of decent ramp like Seething Song, Rite of Flame or Land Tax even.
Your S/b is full of cards that fit the thyme of the deck rather then situational answers for other decks in the format.
You also happen to be running Splinter Twin without a viable win combo like Sunstrike Legionnaire or Village Bell-Ringer.
I'm very sorry for being so harsh, please don't be take this discouraging it's just my honest opinions. I'll happily help you hone this to something more consistent if you would like. Just say what you want to focus on.

I have to agree with maniac. playing to a tournament if cool! But your way better find a casual playgroup.

Try going to your local FNM or even when you get the tournament ask them about the local causal night!

Causual is a great place to get cards for your decks aswell as most people will bring binders to those and trade as there are no set times that people have to get to a round.

THEN AGAIN, any deck CAN beat any other deck. People aren't really going to have anything to bring to hate against you and you will probably get to see some super nuts decks if you do play in the tournament and will play against some of the most experienced and knowledgeable magic players your local scene has to offer. If you think that is worth the £5 entry fee id go for it

^-^

There are a lot of cards in here that I consider fat cards, that don't need to be in here and mostly just slow the deck down. Not turn buyers like safe passage and citadel, but others such as Odric and Flamewright. They're in there mostly because I gave my deck building sets away and have been out of the game a while, therefor those are the cards I have access to. Same deal with the side board. I've got access to maybe twenty more viable cards to replace what's there. Going off to college in a week or so, and I'm strapped for cash, so I've got to focus on a few precision changes, not complete re-imagining. I'll definitely look into the non-basic land. And if you've got some specific protection cards that come to mind, I'd be more than open to replacing the fat with those. I can always card search, but I'm sure there are quite a few options to choose from and I'm unfamiliar with how they play. I was definitely hoping someone could help with ramping (I know my curve is less than attractive) and I'm glad for the suggestions. But as to the suggestion that I drop lifegain, that is kinda a serious keystone of the deck. I've dropped a decent amount of other lifegain cards such as angel feather, Ajani's mantra and soul attendant because they were just not doing enough, but double strike lifelink buffed with tap one land for +1, flying and +1 for each plains, which already happens 2/5 times is op. I'd like to work on speeding it up, and increasing the odds of that. Keep in mind, with six balefire liege out, playing one red spell automatically deals 18 damage, and that has happened too. I find myself usually getting close to beating the pros but I mean, who really cares about close? I do prefer friendly in many regards, but I'm a competitive person, and our local legacy tournaments are free anyway. I have a friend who was very serious into magic and I've played with his decks and they just aren't fun to me. Thanks guys, for the help and suggestions.

This is where the modified deck is. Haven't messed with the sideboard yet. Did my best to prioritize when taking your opinions into account. If/When I am able to institute the changes, I'll delete this current deck in favor of he new one. http://www.mtgvault.com/2123827/decks/from-the-ashesredux/
