Esper: Can't Touch This!

by abcdefu96 on 17 May 2014

Main Deck (60 cards)

Sideboard (0 cards)

No sideboard found.

The owner of this deck hasn't added a sideboard, they probably should...

Submit a list of cards below to bulk import them all into your sideboard. Post one card per line using a format like "4x Birds of Paradise" or "1 Blaze", you can even enter just the card name by itself like "Wrath of God" for single cards.

Deck Description

Thanks to TheWatchGuard1 for the new name!

Get a little board control from godsend and the spear. Pack rat gets big quick with all the legendary cards available for discarding. Use thoughtseize, silence and negate to disrupt your opponent very early. Then of course steal what you can with daxos and nightveil, also mana confluence helps cast those cards exiled with nightveil.

Deck discussion for Esper: Can't Touch This!

Love it! May I ask what pack rat is for though?

Looks tourney worthy.

I use pack rat because there's lots of legendary cards. That way I can discard them for something instead of holding on to them.

sadly I cannot say that I have spent much time in standard lately and so I am afraid that I can't really give you much advice on where you could improve this deck. it already looks to be very consistent, although perhaps a bit more draw might help? and you have a few things to pump, but most of your creatures are still relatively small, seeing as how you cannot have any more than a single of each out at a time.

Yeah that's the fun part, taking opponents creatures. I won't get to play until next week but my hope is that it's fun to play and different from the boring decks that everyone plays.

oh, I understand that taking their creatures is the fun part, and this looks to that really well. but my problem is that you also have to be able to protect the creatures that allow you to do so. you can only put out a single spear and a single godsend at any time, and those are your only pump cards. I guess you can have several spectres, but only one daxos anyways... Like I said, I am pretty unfamiliar with the Theros block and standard in general, so I am not up to speed on what the current meta is and how people are defending.

Maybe something like gridlock?

Or oppressive rays?

I really don't know. I haven't played competitively in at least a year, so I really don't know the newer cards very well.
The Vault is pretty much my only link to the MTG world.

With that in mind... I think that something more solid or evasive than gridlock would be good. aqueous form wouldn't hurt I think. imagine an unblockable Daxos that also scrys every time it attacks. :)

The name doesn't match the deck. Control is all about stalling out the game, not making lots of dudes. This almost is aggro actually.

Not true. This controls by hand disruption. It does not make a lot of dudes, other than pack rat. Unless I am misinformed I am pretty sure that spectres and Daxos are considered control cards. As are thoughtsieze, negate, azorius charm, and silence. Just because a deck has the potential to be fast does not mean it is aggro.

Not really... Control neutralizes threats till it can get its out on the board, which means this deck is not ever live up to the standard of what control is. Aggro on the other hand just kills people quickly, and those decks play thoughtseize as well.

I'm confused as to what control is then... Silence; you can't play this turn pretty much. Azorius charm; put your creature on top of your library. Thoughtseize; let me see your hand so I can get rid of your best card. Daxos/Specter; I hope you don't have anything worthwhile on top of your library because I'm about to use it against you. Negate; no, you're not going to remove my unblockable daxos/specter. Athreos; Ohhh your removal got through? Pay 3 life or its going back to my hand. Godsend; go ahead and block my equipped creature... You can't play any creatures with the same name as the one that just blocked after I exile it... Lastly, even the spear; ..... Go ahead, I'll let your best creature get through then destroy it..... Just because it has potential to have some badass creatures doesn't mean it's not control. Pack rat like I said is mainly so that any duplicates of legendary cards I draw don't go unused. Sounds goofy but I've play tested this deck against some of my better ones and it's pretty much owned face. Pack rat definitely belongs in this deck.

Maybe it should be called controlled aggressively?? Then we can both be right, I'm all about compromise haha

How far have you looked into the competitive metagame? Look at a W/U/x control deck in standard.

You can get a pretty good look at how control decks usually look like.

So if it's not control and it's not aggro, what exactly would you label it? To me it's as much control as I care to play lol. Being someone that tries to win as soon as possible I was kind of proud of this build.

I'd label it "Can't touch this (creature)".

Ha! That's pretty good. I still have my MC Hammer pants from when I was kid... I'll just walk in next Friday wearing them while carrying a boom box blaring that song. If nothing else it should distract all my opponents...
