THE DRAFT
===================================================================

Going into the draft, I decided to keep an open mind and just draft the best cards at the beginning of the draft. The plan was to hopefully have an idea as to what color(s) I wanted to run by the end of round one.

I drafted at a small table of four gents (including myself). Two younger fellows to my left and a friend that I had invited (whom I've played countless times) sat in front of me.

I knew my friend would draft a blue/white control deck - even if there were no blue or white cards. Never have I seen that man play another color.

Between packs 1 and 2, dude-man sitting to my left says aloud: "I'm drafting straight blue." A part of me wanted to say something. A larger part of me chose to keep quiet and leave it to him to find his own way. I looked immediately to my friend sitting in front of me and we had a whole conversation about it without saying a word.

Silent guy in the corner was drafting black and possibly splashing blue or white.

Hello red.
Hello green.

It really hit home that nobody wanted red when I windmill slammed a lightning strike. If that were the only red card I drafted - I would throw in 2 mountains just to play red as a third color.

By the end of pack one I came to the conclusion that green creatures would be the meat and red instants/enchantments would be the potatoes.

Straight-blue passed me a Genesis Hydra (pack 1) and a Phyrexian Revoker (pack 3). I spoke not a word when I was handed the Hydra. I couldn't stop myself when he passed me the Phyrexian Revoker. I asked him what he was thinking and I showed the card to the whole table (after my friend asked to see it). It blew my mind even more because he was playing mono blue and that card was damn near made for blue decks. He answered with: "I didn't understand it, so I picked something else." I felt kind of bad, but it was too late to help him at this point. It didn't help that not a damn rare that I opened was worth a piss.

I had a pretty polished deck midway through pack 3 and decided to hate-draft some cards I really didn't want to deal with. This is where I picked up: Invisibility, Shadowcloak Vampire, and Sungrace Pegasus. Screw those cards.

THE MATCHES
===================================================================

I played a total of five matches - 4 regular matches and a final match (to choose 1st and 2nd place). My deck wound up winning the 2nd place title even though it went 7-5 for the night.

Match 1
(Andrew) Mono White Weenie: 2-1

Match 2
(Chris) Black/Blue Aggro/Removal: 0-2

Match 3
(Kaden) Blue/Black/Artifact Combo/Control: 1-2

Match 4
(Adrian) White...?: 2-0

Match 5 (Final)
(Andrew) Mono White Weenie: 2-1

Match 1 was against my friend Andrew - who I invited to the draft. Every one of his constructed decks is either Mono White Angels or Blue/White Control (with Angels). I was not surprised that he drafted a Mono White Weenie.

I played conservatively - waiting for him to exile, tap, or remove the medium size guns before dropping the tanks. The only threat wound up being Oppressive Rays - which did nothing because I would attack with everything and block with nothing. He always put it on the tanks (Siege Wurm) and by the time they were on the battlefield - I no longer needed the mana.

The games lasted FOREVER.

Andrew held up the draft because he refused to die. My deck had no life gain in it other than Verdant Haven (only there to ramp mana). Andrew's deck was weaved together with life gain and auras. I'm sure I dealt him 40+ damage over the course of one of the games. I finally beat him down with a double dose of Siege Wurms.

Match 2 was over in a matter of minutes. It was almost as if his deck was designed to counter mine. Heavy black with a splash of blue. Lots of removal. Lots of control. Flying vampires with lifelink (auras). I thought I had him in game 2, and then he threw Encrust on my 2 largest creatures and took the smaller creature out with a removal spell. Maybe his deck was amazing. Maybe I drew poorly. Who knows.

Match 3 was extremely fun to play. His deck tapped all my creatures and dropped a 5/5 Ornithopter with the help of Ensoul Artifact. That combo is scary as hell on turn 2. I too was able to fire off an awesome combo in one of the games. I cast Brood Keeper and attached Vineweft to her - bringing out a 2/2 dragon. On the same turn, I slapped Inferno Fist on her and brought out dragon #2. Next turn, I cast Invasive Species and put Vineweft back into my hand - only to attach it to Brood Keeper again and drop out dragon #3. Sadly, all my dragons died at the hands of an Ornithopter. Well played, sir. Well played.

Match 4 was over with quick. I drew all the right cards in both games and my deck moved fast. My opponent drew horribly in both games and his deck couldn't take off. I feel bad for winning that way, but I'll take it. I know he was playing white, but I didn't really get to see anything come out.

Match 5 (the final match) was a carbon copy of Match 1.
Nobody stuck around to watch us finish the match.
It lasted even longer the second time around.
Ultimately - I was the victor.

How to Play

Play each creature as soon as possible and attack every turn possible...
...with every creature...
...unless they have something huge out...
...then leave the smallest guy behind to block and die.

Slap an aura on the creature with the largest power and keep attacking.

Hold onto Crowd's Favor and Phyrexian Revoker. Wait for the perfect time to slap them in the face with one or both of them.

If it's late in the game, use Invasive Species to:
- move auras to larger creatures that came out later in the game
- bounce auras off Brood Keeper to pump out dragons
- choose another target for Phyrexian Revoker
...otherwise, just bounce one of the lands that was used to cast it and attack next turn.

Tap the bears to pay for the Wurms.

Pay for Oppressive Rays {3} and keep attacking with the Wurm(s).
