Deck Description

Budget version of a torpor orb/sundial of the inifinite deck (so no Phyrexian Dreadnoughts).

How to Play

Drop a Torpor Orb and play your horrendous drawback creatures without the drawback! Sundial of the Infinite is a backup in case you don't have an orb out. Play the creature, let the ability go on the stack and end your turn. Poof, the ability is gone and your creature lives. Can also counter opponents spells played during your turn as a fallback.

Deck discussion for Sundial of the Orb

Phyrexian Dreadnought would be the obvious addition to this deck. And go to 4 Dark Rituals. That way you can have a 12/12 trampler first turn.

I don't like the Drain effects in this deck, they add nothing. The trick is to play your creatures while Torpor Orb is out. The Orb costs 2 and the most expensive creature costs 4. So why bother with x-spells? That only makes the manabase complicated. On the other hand you are fucked if you don't draw your Orb or if your opponnet destroys it. That's why would ditch the drain spells and splash blue for library manipulation. Lim-Dûls Vault being the top choice here.
If you insist on keeping those drain spells, replace 4 of your Swamps with Cabal Coffers.

Thanks for the suggestion. I usually try to keep my decks budget friendly, so while the dreadnought is the obvious choice for a deck like this, I would never actually get those cards in real life. As for the drain spells, I find that they are useful since the creatures I am putting out have a high power (for essence harvest) and I usually play multiplayer, so exsanguinate is a nice late game gem to increase my life total and decrease my opponents. As for not drawing an orb, it's a possibility, but that is why I have the tutor spells as well to find it.

Updated by removing the exsanguinates and the essence harvests and adding 4 Avatar of Discords. Wanting to keep this mono-black. Also added 4 Sundial of the Inifinite as a way of countering stuff that could get rid of the orb on my turn, or as a backup to the orb if I don't have one out.

Does that actually work? Whatever it is that destroys your Orb, if it can be played during your turn, it can also be played during that opponent's turn. Since he can see the Sundial, I don't think this will save your Orb. But yes, you can use it to replace the Orb. That's actually a nice trick, I have never seen the Sundial this way :)

Without the X-spells we could customize the mana base now. You said multiplayer, so you might run into situations where your hand is empty and you don't want to draw lands anymore. Maybe replace some of the Swamps with lands that cycle. And Volrath's Stronghold, if your budget allows for one.

True, any instant speed destruction will be played during their turn with the sundial out. But, it is more of a backup in that case anyways. I love the idea of the cycling lands. I always forget about those in my decks. Added 4x barren moor and 4x polluted mire in the place of 8 swamps. I love the stronghold, but I am not paying $20 for it. Thanks for the suggestions.

Since you're keeping budget, I would suggest spoils of the vault and demonic consultation for tutors. they're both 1cmc, and will guarantee the orb is in your hand first turn. spoils can accidently kill you, but if the orb was that far down, odds are you would've died anyways.

Excellent idea. I've never thought about Demonic Consultation, I think that would be a great add.

yea, if your group is strict on rules, consultation is restricted to one. that's why spoils is a good alternative. otherwise, demonic is the better card, and is like 60 cents.
