Deck Description

This is my homebrew rough-sketch take on a stax and pox combined. It´s meant for Legacy competitive, but the deck itself is 100% un-tested, so I don´t know how it fares. Anyone have any sort of pointers? Do´s and don´t´s ?

Okay, I took to FNM last Friday and it went okay, however the Crucible´s where somewhat hard to get, and hard to play also, some modifications may occur centering the 3 < CMC´s

I didn´t get to win, but this piece gave my opponents Hell, I´ll tell ya´
I traded for a Blind Ob, which got in just now, and I´m still on the hunt for some of the Heavy duty Cards.

Please give some advice if you think it can be improved :D

[Edit] 18-10-2013
It went okay, we weren´t enough to play a tourney, but it did get to see play, and the first 3 rounds, yep, got beaten to a bloody pulp by a "Land Deck" NeXT up; Control w. FoW + DelverBob. It went 2-1 where Bloodghast and Blind Ob did a lot of damage, and I was able to p*ss my opponent off. It was aaaall good. Actually that 1 win, was my very first win at all, at the FNM =)

[Edit] 14-12-2013
A playset of Mox Diamond and Deathrite Shaman came in the mail yesterday, and both went into the deck. Some major modifications have been made, including the Baneslayer as a fail-safe emergency plan. Also the SB have been tossed around alot, and I found and answer for when battling XX-Lands; Limited Resources. Now I just need to find a way to stop Engineered Explosives, besides Extirpate

Deck discussion for Stax Pox

i feel like its a little slow, but also that you will be sacking ur lands eventually :(
you could sac the stack and than get it back with acadmy?

Hey man - yeah, the Academy seems okay, but the idea is also alot of recursion - Crucible makes it so that I can sac my lands and replay them, giving almost inf. landfall to feed my Vamps.
A secret tech is hidden (more or less) with Crucible + Bloodghast + Undiscovered Paradise.
Also Tangle Wire keeps the Card Draw high while stalling the game, making your board control more vast (or that´s the idea ;) )
Isochron for disrupting your enemies´ strategies.

You could even discard artefacts and get ´em back with Buried Ruin =)
Are there other ways, you think, that can improve this?

well for competative, your going to need more than one card to ride on :( you may need to get 2 or 3 combos in this deck

I think you have way too many Isochrons in here to be honest. Every list I run now has a maximum of 2. Granted my lists use Enlightened Tutor, but still, 4 is too many. That's the very first thing I noticed, so I had to post it. I'll take a look at this in more detail later, just busy right now =/

What´s your view on adding 2 Panoptic Mirror to go with SB Temporal?

I wouldn't bother with panoptic to be honest.

I thought of adding 'Karn, Silver Golem' to this piece maybe a 1-of, and downsize Braids to 1 also.

I like it. It follows the general framework of an Iso-Pox, while still being your own take on it. I would suggest dropping down to just 2 Isochrons though, especially now that this runs the proper spell suite. I'd also try to up the land count to at least 24, if not 25. The lack of Hide//Seek is questionable to me, but I know this is a hybrid design, so maybe that's fine. I'd also look at http://www.mtgvault.com/whiteandbluetheykillyou/decks/new-macabre/ this deck by WnB. He might be taking some time off from the vault, but the guy still has some great ideas with this kinda stuff too. I'd also talk to Quasimofo about this kind of thing. He's more of an expert on Pox and Stax than I am.

I did consider adding 2-3 of Hide//Seek, based from your design, but as you said it; this is a homebrew =)

Hi Sure, I tested this not long ago, it didn´t win, but brah, lemme tell ya, Frustration Incarnate were the key words. I was wondering as to how you shuffe a deck? Playing with 'only' 3 Enlightened Tutors made it more vulnerable and slower to get the key cards. Is the Meta to blame?

1

I think the main thing to blame is the amount of things you're relying on ET to grab, specifically related to the number of "one-ofs" you have. I tend to think you can grab about 10-12 things with 3 ETs and just a hair more with 4 (eventually adding a fourth doesn't help because of diminishing returns).

I would try to refine your list to what is essential, and remove some of those 1-ofs so that you can have some things in pairs. This puts less pressure on ET overall, and should help with getting the cards you need.

And yeah, any form of Pox, STAX, or "Stox" is infuriating to play against. Been a while since I've seen a White Pox (or "Elmer's Pox") like yours here. I'll have to get on Arty's case to post up his list.

Thank you so much, sure, for your friendly advice =) From what JensDagon wrote, I guess Tangle Wire gotta go =) Although I can´t afford Rishadan, I was able to mana screw my opponent vastly. Nevertheless, he won the game, but it was a damn good fight. Pox is not 'evil' ... Its 12-times more cruel \m/

I'd suggest adding a Meekstone, it's what really makes Blind Obedience go from great to amazing. Tarmogoyf comes in, and doesn't untap? Yes, very yes!

Another thing that makes the mana denial work is Winter Orb, as I'm sure you've noticed. Going first turn Moxxen, Port, Orb can make some people fold if they have no outs. I'd suggest trying to add at least a second, but it is one of those cards that's not nearly as effective resource light decks such as Reanimator, Delver, ect.

But one thing is true of all Black based control decks; the key to success lays in the sideboard. Try playing some other decks against this one, see what they can do to beat you, and develop foils to them. Stoneblade is a deck that gave me a surprising amount of hell. but playing Torpor Orb and Chains of Mephistopheles essentially stops that from being a functional deck when coupled with the pressure you can put on their manabase.

Also, I'd totally trade you homes if I could. You could have Georgia and random trips to Gujarat if I get Danmark.

Smallpox sure is a great way of keeping opponents on their toes. They seldom like the card, or rather its abilities, and man did some of them got angry. Follow up by a Pox and Blind Ob - - - > Me ^_^ - - -> Them Ò.ó
How would it sound if Liliana´s Caress made an appearance in this? Maybe as a one of?

XD Very nice Blackfire, and there's nothing quite like shutting your opponent out of a game is there?
Liliana's Caress has been an option before, not one I've tried, but if you were to try it in place of anything I'd suggest Tangle Wire.

@JensDagon: No, control is evil, no doubt what-so-ever. In some play, I almost get to empty my hand turn 2/3, and my opp´s looks a me in this funny way. When Ensnaring Bridge happens, they´re all outta laughs, hehe. Kind of a douche move, but Surewhynot´s got it pinnen to a T. Haha
I think the main reason I enjoy "Stox" (Can´t get that nickname out of my head) is, that it has soo many moves of play, but they´re somehow all connected, so no matter (well, almost) what starter hand you get, there´s some way of disabling. It makes MtG fun and challenging, for both sides
I see what you mean about switching tangle wire, but its in here to make sure, that if I mull´ed to 4, I still have a chance of gaining game-advantage :) I´ll definitely give it some thought, thanks Jens =)

@Sure: That's beautiful.

You say evil like it's something that I view as a negative trait in this game, that is most certainly not the case. The reason my decks have come out as they are is because Sure had a challenge to see who could make the cruelest most evil deck.
The reason I like decks like this is that everything is connected. Hands assemble virtually from anything, and while some might seem quite scattered, they all have the underlying principle of crushing advantage and burdens. It's partly the reason I chose Mr. Sinister as my avatars this time around, it's engineered luck.

And you didn't sound angry at all, but I can kind of see how it could have been viewed as such, I chalked it up to the ambiguity of text, and hoped for the best.

Haha, why can I only like your comments once?!
And your absolutely right! Almost every single hand is playable, and I got this rolling yesterday. Sorry for my French, but I 'pwned' a guy completely. Actually to such a degree that I felt sorry for him... poor dude, heh.
He played DelverBob with Burn. I was at 4 life, he was at 1. I had Abob, Meekstone, Stack with 1 Soot, Ensnaring Bridge, and just when he thought, he could pull it threw, with a Grim Lavamancer, I topdecked a Tormod´s Crypt.

One word: Dirty
One feeling: Disgusting
One goddamn good win !

(He didn´t want to play with me any more that day)

I´m not pompous, I´ve just never seem a lockdown like that before. So, Sure´s got it pinned to a T. Haha

I think pompousness is reserved to Storm mostly, it's usually just being cheeky when you play lockdown/out.

Thanks, man =) I´m not that 'at home' in "Stox" yet, this is my maiden voyage so-to-speak, and while it works alright, I´m almost all the time trying to improve. This notion I can´t let go, telling me; "This can be better..!" only I don´t get to hear more, haha, so that´s why I´m asking =)

What do you folks and foxes think on its final design? I´ve messed around with it quite a bit, but I think it´s finished. I really wanted the full ps of Hymn main board, but the curve hurts my brain, when there are more 2CMC´s than 1´s - Although it still feels a bit iffy, I think it performs neat and okay against the decks I´ve been battling. So far, against XX Lands, Delver Bob and the deck I never seem to best: Death and Taxes. It is just too insanely fast, so much, that I haven´t been able to set up my Stox before I´m at 12 life and opponent at 28. By then it feels even more impossible to gain the upper hand.

Have you any tips for terminating D&T ? Are there different tactics/cards to include?

1
Posted 08 December 2013 at 19:07

D&T and Maverick are amongst the banes of MtG to me, they're like Fish, in that they're not necessarily actually very good decks, they're just solid. Oh, and obnoxious.

The best results I've had against such decks is aiming for Blind Obedience and Meekstone. Then disrupting their Æther Vials, not that it will stop that mana base, but it will slow them down to a more manageable pace.
Amusingly though, while Stox dies to D&T in a brutal fashion, I've had a good success rate against them with Contamination builds.

But of course ! Silly me. Their 'Mother of Runes' can´t protect them against Artifacts and the Obedience doesn´t target the creatures *facepalm [Hard]*
Thank you, Jens, for, yet again, helping out a lesser mtg player. You, sir, should teach it. That goes for you too, surewhynot.

What´s your general idea of Expedition Map in Stax? Controlled draw or a waste of space?
I know, I´ve suggested it to surewhynot before, but that was EDH =)

In EDH it's a phenomenal card...but in legacy it rarely sees use. There are decks that use it, yes, but I would not count Stax among that list.

I think it´s close to be complete. Well, that is if it works. Testing it next Wednesday/Friday, although I still have a few issues with it (Stuff like an extra Baneslayer/Serra's Blessing, and if it would be a capitol idea of throwing in a Royal Assassin to combo with Blind Ob/Meekstone)
However the frame is all but finished, I just need a few more cards, then it´s done, but until then, I request any and all assistance you can offer, fore I am contemplating this is my final piece.
