Deck Description

I knew I wanted to try and make Bolas work competitively, so I looked through all of the Standard Grixis coloured cards and didn't find anything that would make him work, so I was debating at adding Green for ramp but I still wasn't happy with that thought. So I looked through all the Standard Grixis coloured cards again. Somehow I didn't see Crypt Ghast the last time and I was like "Yes!". I immediately thought of the mono-black control deck that Conley Woods played in Pro Tour Gatecrash (Top 16). This deck is very similar to his.

The name comes from Conley Woods similar deck named "Black By Popular Demand". It was named that because some people really wanted to see a "mono"-black deck in competitive play. I decided to ironically name my deck "Bolas By Popular Demand", because in fact Nicol Bolas has never really seen competitive play.

Feedback would definetly be appreciated.

How to Play

Draw cards, maintain control with removal and my creatures.
Play Crypt Ghast and play one of my win conditions: Nicol Bolas mainly or even Rakdos's Return.
I can get Nicol Bolas out on turn 5, best case scenario.
It gets pretty insane when I have Nicol Bolas and Liliana on the field at the same time.

***Sideboarding***
These are generalizations and are not exactly what I'm going to be sideboarding against every deck of this type.
Aggro:
---
Control:
---
Other:
Rakdos Charm for graveyard decks and reanimator.
Pithing Needle for Planeswalkers but mostly for Kessig Wolf Run or Nephalia Drownyard.

The curve is no good against everything played right now. Consider 1 drops like Tragic Slip, Pillar of Flame, and Rapid Hybridization. Get some counters in the main. Dissipate and Syncopate are both great in a control deck. They take away flashback and UnBurial Rites. Lower the number of planeswalkers by one each. If you can use one cost color spells over some of the more expensive color hungry cards for board wipes you will be more efficient, for instance Cyclonic Rift over Mutilate, Think Twice over Sign in Blood and Ultimate Price over Victim of Night. 1 Blue or 1 Black vs 2 black. You have the makings of some pretty potent control cards, like Olivia, but not enough of them and most are in your sideboard. Nicol Bolas can be a great finisher but ugh... takes forever to get to him. Olivia can do work early. So can Duskmantle Seer. I have a newly designed Grixis Control if you want to take a look. I also have a Nicol Bolas deck.

I really appreciate the feedback and it does help a lot. As for the 1 cost removal, I would rather straight up kill stuff at the cost of one extra mana rather than leave a 3/3 or something like that. Syncopate would definitely be good especially because of the mana that Crypt Ghast generates and exile is always nice. I was considering Cyclonic Rift over Mutilate but because I'm playing mostly black, and because I would rather kill a Thragtusk rather than have it come back eventually, I chose mutilate and I tested Think Twice originally and I never seemed to get the blue mana in this mostly black deck, so I went with Sign In Blood because it helps me find the other colours of mana that I need. and Victim of Night because it will kill a lot more things than Ultimate Price other than Jund match-ups. The double black in the cost of a lot of my cards isn't a problem because EVERY single land in my deck generates black mana.

I'm sorry but i just cant help but see the irony in the fact that you marked this as unloved when the title is "bolas by popular demand".

Actually, the name is meant to be ironic. The deck is based off of the "mono-black" deck that Conley Woods played in Pro Tour Gatecrash, named "Black By Popular Demand." His deck was named that because there was quite a few people wanting to see a mono-black control deck in competitive Magic. I named my deck "Bolas By Popular Demand" because Bolas is in fact not popular at all and this deck is similar to his.
