Deck Description

With this deck you can relive your favorite John Carpenter films! Spectral entities roll through The Fog, keeping your opponent at bay while The Thing (in the Ice) patiently waits. It doesn’t take a team of Nordic scientists to awaken the horror that lies beneath!

The Shadows Over Innistrad set is my re-entry to the world of Magic after being away for a few years. The original Innistrad set is when I first fell in love with all of the creeps, vampires, werewolves, etc. However, a new surprise has come with a direct connection to my favorite movie – The Thing. Thing in the Ice/Awoken horror was something I knew I had to build a deck around, but I didn’t know where to begin. This deck was built on three key factors:

1. The challenge of creating my first Standard format deck (All SOI based)
2. Playing a color I constantly struggle with (Blue)
3. Keeping a tight theme to the deck

My knowledge of Magic was very limited and with a lot of help from the wonderful players and employees at the local game shops, I was introduced to the different formats. I decided to build a Standard deck to play with on a weekly basis. Since I was getting back in because of my love for the Innistrad sets, I wanted to keep it all based in SOI. Thing in the Ice provided the blue base of this deck, which led me to try and incorporate more counter spells than I am used to. Keeping a theme simply fell in with horror and other creepy things. I soon found myself adding more and more Spirits, then realizing the awesome theme of John Carpenter’s The Thing and The Fog, the result is what you see here. Mystery (Clues), horrors, and ghosts – all you need is a sweet Carpenter soundtrack.

How to Play

Get out Thing in the Ice as soon as possible along with some handy Spirits. Use counter spells to keep your opponent at bay while ticking off those Ice Counters. Can’t get the cards you need? Sack some of the clues to find them! Spirits whittle the opponent down until the ice cracks and the horror is unleashed!
