Deck Description

UPDATED VERSION 17/12/2011

Budget Mono black discard deck. The aim of this deck is easy: make your opponent discard his hand and control him. I did not like the mimic vat as somebody suggest mostly because i feel its too slow for this deck, especially vs aggro ones.

Updated strategy and card analysis:

Creatures

- Augur of skulls: this card i found to be quite amazing. If not dealt with it will make discard your opponent 2 cards if dealt with...who cares they lost one removal/counterspell so either way its good for you. His regenerate ability makes it quite good when you really need those 2 discarded cards (ie: you need 4 damage from liliana's caress or you need to activate your quest for the nihil stone, thus making 5 damage) or simply as a good blocker if needed, not to mention that it combo well with Cry of Contrition's haunt.

- Nyxathid: the "fattie" of the deck, well kind of. In my testing experience it usually comes out as a 4/4 without too much trouble on turn 3 and it grows quite fast to 6/6 or 7/7. I prefer this than Abyssal nocturnus mostly because very often i end up with my opponent with no cards in hand.

- Bloodgift demon: great card, 5 cmc for a 5/4 that draws you cards by the mere cost of 1 life? great to keep card advantage and finish the opponent.

- Liliana's Specter: ooh i love that card. It provides a good creature with a solid attack and evasion and when it hits the field it makes the opponent discard, providing some kind of card advantage.

- Hypnotic Spectre: I replaced guul draz spectre because this is faster and is a threat that must be answered quickly. Random discard is so evil.

Enhancement:

Quest for the Nihil Stone & Liliana's Caress: doesnt need explanation, just put them out asap. If you have enough discard spells they end the game for you.

Spells:

- Cry of Contrition: very efficient, haunt augur of skulls or some creature you going to doomblade after. Very often the haunt provides some sort of pseudo-evasion, making the opponent scared to kill that creature. i love that card.

- Despise: useful to eliminate potential threats best if used early on the game for obvious reasons (not to mention you have an idea of opponent hand which is never bad). Alternatives can be: Duress/ Inquiisition of Kozilek...sideboard material for sure. Switch according to opponent.

- Doomblade: offers some protection on what you couldn't discard (of course swap it with go for the throat vs black)

Planeswalker:

Liliana Vess (aka old liliana): plain discard or tutor both can be very good in the end game (ie: make opponent discard last card thus activating caress/nihil stone or tutor for a big demon or nyxathid...if the opponent is foolish enough to make it use her ultimate its pretty much gg with all the discard going on.)

Thank you all for the comments and suggestions! :)

Deck discussion for Budget Discard

If you can get your hands on some, Abyssal Nocturnus sounds like a good idea for your deck. Funeral Charm and Psychic Miasma are great as well.

I tried abyssal nocturnus in my first build and it turned out to be quite useless especially when the opponent has no cards in hand (which happens a lot with this deck) and he can't discard anything. In my opinion Nythaxid is much better, especially to end the games and its more reliable. Psychic miasma i think its too "slow", only 1 discard for 2 cmc where most likely they will throw some cheap creature/spell they dont need. Much better some despise-like cards. Funeral charm is quite good, especially as instant but right now i feel satisfied with the discard speed and spells.

throw some mimic vats in there!.. they top deck, mimic vat a liliana's specter, play a token copy it directly after their draw step, they discard the card they just drew. completely lock down the opponent like that
