Deck Description

A terrific trio of white, black and green mana cards gives this deck a wide range of options. Built around the use of +1/+1 counters and life-gain is a set of low-cost and powerful spells, as well as a group of high-cost and overpowered cards to help you keep your opponents at bay and your creatures on an all time high.

How to Play

Almost half of the cards in "Life and Death" are made from basic and special land cards to lower the probability of mana-drought (since the deck is comprised of a whopping 90 cards). This means that you'll probably begin the game with roughly 2-4 land.

If you're lucky, you might begin with a one mana-cost creature such as Dragon Hunter, so you can lay down right away. If not, you might be able to place down a special land which requires it to be "tapped upon entering the battlefield" like Blossoming Sands. The plus side of this is that you gain a life, and you get to use either white OR green mana next turn!

If you've drawn a spell which is affected by or affects ALL of you're creatures, then you want to hold out for as many creatures as you can before using it. Even if it's an awesome card. A good example is Abzan Ascendancy: "When Abzan Ascendancy enters the battlefield, put a +1/+1 counter on each creature you control." This means that only creatures that are on the battlefield when the enchantment enters the battlefield get a +1/+1 counter. Then there are even cards whose effects rely on the amount of cards with counters on them, this part should be self-explanatory!

Another large aspect of the deck is life-gain. There are 8 land cards and a plethora of other spells which provide you with extra life , or reduce your opponent's. A great example is the infamous Siege Rhino: "When Siege Rhino enters the battlefield, each opponent loses 3 life and you gain 3 life." This could be the card which tips the game in your favour! This lowers the risk of you losing the game, and at the same time increases your opponents chances of losing as well. What's more, Siege Rhino only costs 4 mana and is a 4/5 Trampler!

As you can see, "Life and Death" is a powerhouse of cards which, if played right (with a little bit of luck in finding the right cards, can guarantee you the game. Bring it to FNM while you still can, because "Khans of Tarkir" and "Fate Reforged are rotating out in April (even though you can still play in Modern)! Feel free to provide your own input and some better replacement cards, since this deck was made from a mismatched collection from the past couple of years.

I Wish You Well, Fellow Planeswalkers...
