Deck discussion for U/W Standard Control

Hey Boss, thanks for the words back on "Primal Rage". I'm really diggin' this deck you have here, it's very sexual. I love how you kept the special lands to a minimum to keep it fast paced, but the only word of advice I'd have on this one to speed it up even faster would be to removed the Obvlivion Rings. They'll eventually return whatever card back to owner, but yeah they work great if you're playing someone w/out a "Destroy Enchantment" card. But I think you'd be better suited putting in 4x cards that either buff you or creatures. Maybe 2x Beacon of Immortality for life gain & 2x Behomoth Sledge for Trample & LIfegain to follow suit of your other cards there. That way it combats the threat of a single card by buffing your life, rather than worry about Oblivion targeting out 1 card, that could be cancelled rather quickly. Just some food for thought brutha'.

But this deck is very nice, I really like it. I'd be scared to play it honestly, but check out my Exodus deck under my decks on profile. I'd throw down with the Pepsi Challenge w/ that one. Kudos!

Oh, and I meant to let you know a Side-Board has to be 15 cards on the dot. No more, no less for it to be legal. Just lettin' ya' know boss. Cya' round!

Ok, the problem with the Beacon is that it's not standard legal anymore and the Behemoth Sledge is green, of which I have none and I don't really want to splash green simply for that. The O-Rings are incredibly handy and often times I can use my counters to back them up. As for the sideboard, I know it has to be 15 cards, but i'm not sure what else I should add to it. :S

4x Landbind Ritual would be sick in 2nd match if you end up playing against a life sapper. ;P

I don't recall the SB ever having to be exactly 15, just not over 15...

Thanks sTr8-jAcKeT. I'll look into that. Only problem is, lifegain seldom seems to win games, except sometimes against quick red burn decks. I'll see how it goes though. Any other sideboard ideas?

A good combo I am using at the moment is: Halimar Depths, Deprive, Adventuring gear and explorer's scope on something like Hedron crab or another creature which benefits landfall.

Could always use Everflowing chalice, paths, obviuosly more Mind Sculptors, Colonnades, more glacials. The dual lands are cheap online now, only a few bucks a piece.

For sideboard, firewalkers, leyline of sanctity, celestial purge, flashfreeze all would be good choices. Not spreading seas

Ok, great suggestions! Thank you. I do really want to stick with the spreading seas, however, because they are a basic out to many decks (especially jund!). They are good enough in those matchups to buy me at least an extra couple turns which can be incredibly helpful. Thanks again though.

Spreading Seas are not as good as they were 2-3 months ago. Most deck that worried about them now have some sort of answer, either main or side board. At a 4 of, it's cluttering your side board that could be used for way more useful things.

Is the chalice really that good? I dont have too many planeswalker that it really makes a huge difference i think. I dont see many times when i need it. I've tried it & there's almost always better options for turn 2...

You never play chalice turn 2. You should play it turn 3, with a blue open to counter on their turn if needed.

I agree with kaim arouet, he knows what he's talking about :P Also you may want to use Tectonic Edge. They are great against tri-color lands and manlands!

Spreading seas does the same thing, plus draws a card. Many people in top 8's are still maindecking 4 for these reasons. I dont mean to argue but i still think it's one of the best options for UW decks against many decks. I do like the other ideas though.

They're beginning to come out though. It messes with people's sideboards when they have things to fix their mana and there's no reason to. Make them kill 2-4 spots in their sideboard.

I would recommend some wall of denials and path to exiles, Wall of denial is useful as a 0/8 fying defender with shroud. Path to exile can be very useful to exile a a creature that an opponent has tapped out for. yea they get a land but usually in a control deck that shouldn't matter all that much.

Wall of Denial isn't good anymore. they just keep slamming baneslayer into it and making it even harder for you to win in the mirror. Otherwise, they swing around it.

Um. To play blue/white control you have to have the blue/white control cards. This would be better described as UWBS.

Don't know about you, but I see lots of control in this deck.

We'll see. I may just remake it completely from scratch, only to have a similar end result. Haha. Idk right now though. Think I could use a break from UW control even though I do still love it.

go with 1 of sun titan, 1 of baneslayer, 1 of wurmcoil engine, 1 of frost titan.

this eliminates the fear of memoricide on a tapped out turn.

path to exile and oblivion ring arent in standard so you should replace those soon.

In order to make this T2 with the new rotation, you need to remove the following cards:

1) Oblivion Ring
2) Elspeth, Knight-Errant
3) Essence Scatter
4) Path to Exile

I would personally run some Spreading Sea's main board. It is a brutal card, and on turn two is such a disruption it can quite literally be game ending. More Tectonic Edges are a necessity too, seeing as Valekuut Ramp is the most common archetype played in Standard right now. I would get rid of the two Sejiri Steppes, running some Tectonic Edges, or Mystifying Mazes perhaps. Replace the Elspeths with Venser or Gideon if you wish to keep the count of your Planeswalkers up. Or you could put in some more creatures. More Titans of course, but maybe some other big bombs, like Iona or something.

You should look into some Linvala, keeper of Silence for your side-board (In place of the Sea's). She comepletely shuts down Elf decks. And a 3/4 flyer for 4 isn't bad at all.

Overall, a great deck, one that I hope to copy someday (No Titans or Jace, TMS's for me at the moment).

Thanks for your comments. I made the deck a few months ago for pre-scars standard. At the time it did pretty well for me. I just haven't gotten around to actually transferring the deck into the new standard but I may look into it soon. I've been busy trying new/other decks instead recently, though. Good luck with your own UW control decks.:)

I had seen your comments allll over this site, lol, so i decided I must check your deck out. and I must say, looks pretty solid!
I'm relatively new to magic, and i was wondering if you could give my U/B control deck some pointers?
You don't have to, but it'd be nice xD
So again, sweet deck!
