Willowing Burn Control - A Mod..

by Edna on 16 August 2011

Main Deck (60 cards)

Sideboard (15 cards)

Planeswalkers (3)

Submit a list of cards below to bulk import them all into your sideboard. Post one card per line using a format like "4x Birds of Paradise" or "1 Blaze", you can even enter just the card name by itself like "Wrath of God" for single cards.

Deck Description

Grove of the Burnwillows + Punishing Fire = Amazing against over half the format (aka, basically everything besides combo). Add to it counter-measures and some efficient spells (BBE for example) and the game should be wrapped up. Adding blue counters should help shore up the control/combo matchups while the Punishing Fire portion should make the aggro decks a breeze if you draw even decently.

Deck discussion for Willowing Burn Control - A Modern Experiment

Ok, any help would be great! I don't have Bloodbraid Elf because cascading into a Mana Leak just sucks. Also, I should probably have 1-3 more land somewhere but idk what to cut... The sideboard needs a ton of help but I just am using general catch-alls since the format is so new and no one really knows for sure what will be played or not. So yeah, critique it as much as you can, but please try to be nice about it. Just a rough sketch at this point.:)

Hm... I don't really know what to suggest here. My mind's really cloudy at the moment, and I'm just out of advice. Lol.

I'm commenting this to essentially tell you I didn't forget about this deck. :P
I WILL comment again with some actual advice.

But what are your main concerns with this deck? Maybe if you highlight those I can think on ways to improve them.

Well, seeing as Modern is super new and I haven't really played much of it yet, I'm not entirely sure what the biggest concerns are or should be if that makes sense. However, I am curious to see your take on what I've come up with. I mean, perhaps the deck is counter-happy, but I'm not sure. I'm curious to see where you think this deck's weaknesses lie.

At this moment, I can promise you I've overlooked at least a couple solid card choices for a deck like this and I'm coming to you for an extra mind to figure out what I may be missing. Also, the sideboard is a total pile at the moment and was hastily put together without having a clue what's going to be in the format for tier 1 decks. Ideas on top decks and good answers would be awesome.:)

Hmm.. I feel as if it's really... I don't know the word for it...
it looks weird to me. What's weird? I don't know. But I mean, it looks solid none the less.

I think a few more creatures could do you good, though.
Some to look at? Fatespinner. She's so good. In a control shell, she's amazing.
Venser, shaper servant. He serves as counter and an into the roil. I really like this guy.

Those are the top 2 I can think of at the moment. Both of which I feel could have a spot in here.
I don't really think you need 4 punishing fire. and maybe it's just me, but I have a deep hatred for cryptic command. lol triple blue in a tri colored deck? :/
Might slow you down, regardless of the fact that you only run 2.

Yeah, I understand the weirdness. It's certainly a slighlty different from normal list but I think it has potential - it certainly needs tweaking, though.
Venser!! I can't believe I forgot about him! He seems like a solid addition for sure. Thanks!
Fatespinner is a card I'm honestly a bit iffy on. I guess I just haven't had the besrt of luck with it in the past (though admittedly most of my experience comes from casual multiplayer games where it just results in a massive target painted on my head..). It's also really fragile and doesn't seem to do enough most times, but it's certainly a card I'll keep in mind and toss in and out as I test and tweak the list.
I agree that I am a little short on creatures, though. I'll keep looking for other options.

Cryptic is a card I really love and is such a powerful utility spell. I only added 2 simply because of the mana and I'm still not sure on it. I did try to warp the mana to work a bit better with Cryptic, but I guess I'll find out how well it worked through some testing. This is definitely a card that may either need to be cut or require the mana-base to change. I do only have 8 total land that can't produce blue in some way, though so it doesn't seem like it'll be dead too often.

Punishing Fire is actually such a great card with Grove of the Burnwillows. In fact, I'd rather cut a Lightning Bolt before Punishing Fire I think, simply for its built in card advantage and everything. We'll see. Thanks for your help as always though. I'll be making some changes later today/tonight.:)

Hey Edna, I recently made a legacy forgemaster deck and i was wondering if you'd be able to check it out and offer some advice?
I guess in actuality it's just a MUD deck, but so far it's been testing pretty well. Can be stupid fast, which is always good, and honestly not too expensive. (:
